escribiendo esta columna, las elecciones se llevaran a cabo en unos cuantos días. Para cuando usted lea esto, los votos ya deben de haber sido contados y los nuevos funcionarios serán nomb-rados. Algunos de nosotros estaremos contentos con los resultados, otros estarán de-cepcionados de que los can-didatos que habíamos votado por, y tal vez trabajaron duro para, han perdido. La política

y la temporada de eleccio-nes pueden ser estresantes. ¡Muchas personas tienen la creencia de que el candidato que apoyan es el mejor y el oponente de ese candidato es el peor! El hecho es, alguien gana y alguien pierde. Son elegidos por los votantes, y la forma en que funciona es, la mayoría gana. Ahora ten-emos la responsabilidad de trabajar con los candidatos que han ganado y mantener-los responsable.

Como ciudadanos buenos y responsables, nuestra partici-pación no se inicia y termina en la cabina de votación. Los funcionarios que hemos elegidos tienen la responsab-ilidad de que nos escuchen y que representen a todos. Los funcionarios recién elegidos tendrán sitios por la Red y los números de teléfono dis-ponibles, para la gente que representan estén en contacto con ellos. Ellos están obliga-dos a representar a todos, no solamente a las personas que votaron por ellos o las per-sonas que donaron a la cam-paña.

Todos pagamos impuestos y todos merecemos ser es-cuchados y representados. Si no reciben nuestra opinión, no sabrán lo que son nuestras preocupaciones. Si no le-vantamos nuestra voz, no vamos a ser escuchados. Nos corresponde a nosotros para mantenerlos conscientes.

En nuestra próxima colum-na, vamos a tener una lista de números de contacto de

nuestros funcionarios electos y le animamos a mantenerse informado y seguir partici-pando. Por mi parte, estoy contento

que ya pasaron las eleccio-nes. La política puede ser un negocio sucio. Puede causar división en las familias, entre amigos y comunidades. Aho-ra es el momento de aceptar los resultados y trabajar unos con otros. Trabajando juntos y con nuestros funcionarios electos, podemos hacer de nuestra comunidad un lugar mejor. Por lo tanto, estrechar la

mano a los que ganaron y les deseamos lo mejor. El-los necesitan nuestra ayuda y vigilancia para tener éxito. Manténgase involucrado y comprometido y vamos a tra-bajar juntos.

The lifetime probability of dying from cancer is 1 in 5 for Hispanic men and 1 in 6 for Hispanic women. Cancer is the leading cause of death among Hispanics. No-vember is lung cancer awareness month; do you know your risk for lung cancer?Genesis Philanthropy, in partnership

Chamber of Commerce, is offering a free and easy way for patients to learn about their risk for lung cancer.“There are a lot of individuals who en-

counter barriers such as costs that pre-vents them from getting preventative services,” says Missy Gowey, Executive Director of Genesis Philanthropy.The new program offers free low dose

CT scans to those who qualify as being at a high risk for lung cancer. Only those who have a physician referral will be eli-gible for a CT scan. Patients can assess their risk for lung cancer by completing a quick, confidential online survey at www.genesisphilanthropy.org/knowy-

ourrisk. A Genesis Cancer Care Institute Nurse Navigator contacts individuals, if their survey indicates a higher risk for lung cancer. In its first few months, the Waddell ini-

tiative has resulted in 300 free screenings and a discovery of early stage lung can-cer in 5 individuals. This meets the na-tional average for similar program across the country. Individuals who receive a lung cancer diagnosis at an early stage have a much better chance to survive the disease.If not for the Waddell Lung Screening

initiative, the scan might cost around $300-$400.

Maurice Beauregard is one of the first 20 people to take advantage of the free CT scans. “I smoked for about 30 years,” he says.

I realize that I have big shoes to fill as JoAnn has grown the festival and it’s now the largest cultural event in the state. LULAC Iowa celebrates the Latino leadership awards banquet

DES MOINES- More than 300 in-dividuals came together to celebrate to celebrate the Latino community at the second annual Iowa Latino Leadership Banquet on Saturday.Six individuals were honored at

the banquet, including a promising young Latina who was awarded a scholarship.“The Latino community once again

united to show how strong we have become as a community and as a segment of the Iowa population,” said Joe Enriquez Henry, president of Council 307 and state director of LULAC of Iowa. “Our organization was honored to lead the celebration of the achievements of these indi-viduals who work hard every day on behalf of Latinos and all Iowans.”Attendees include various mem-

bers of the Latino community, elected leaders, candidates for state office and national Latino leaders Margaret Moran, the president of National LULAC, and Brent Wil-kes, the national executive director.Speakers highlighted the need for

the Latino community to vote and become active members in the po-litical process, both by running for office and ensuring their voices are heard at the polls.

The following individuals were honored:

LULAC Builder Award Sara Monroy Huddleston, presi-

dent of a new LULAC Council in Storm Lake, Ia. Huddleston, a mem-ber of the Storm Lake City Coun-cil, has actively worked to increase awareness of the Latino community and has extended the olive branch to individuals and organizations that traditionally have not supported La-tinos in order to develop working relationships.

Latino Business Person of the Year Award JoAnn Mackey, former director of

Latino Resources Inc. and founder of Iowa’s Latino Heritage Festival. Mackey started the statewide event 14 years ago as a way to celebrate the contributions from the more than 22 Latino countries that are repre-sented in Iowa. She retired after this year’s festival. The festival draws thousands each year and serves as the largest cultural event in Iowa.

Latino Hero Award U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, who will

retire after serving Iowans for more than 40 years, Harkin has been an advocate for all Iowans and his work has extended to the Latino commu-nity, those with special needs and others. He has supported measures that have improved the lives of La-tinos and helped them gain higher paying jobs.

Iowa Latino Leadership Award Vanessa C. Marcano-Kelly, a

graduate of the inaugural Latina Leadership Initiative of Greater Des Moines, who now works for the Iowa Department of Human Servic-es. Marcano-Kelly has been a com-munity organizer with Iowa Citi-zens for Community Improvement, where she advocated on behalf of the Latino community for issues that include wage theft, immigration re-form, voter’s rights, driver’s licens-es and raising the minimum wage.

Emerging Latino Leadership Scholarship Award Maria Mayorga, 25, is in her fi-

nal year at Drake University Law School. She has interned for several Des Moines-area attorneys. Mayor-ga worked at the Drake Law School Legal Clinic and was the legal as-sistant for the Immigrant Survivors Advancement Legal Program (ISA), where she helped immigrant women

who were victims of domestic abuse receive legal assistance and counsel-ing referrals. Mayorga, a graduate of Dowling Catholic High School, is a single parent of a son, and also provides translation services to her alma mater high school.

This year, a new award was intro-duced. The Law Office of Sonia Par-ras sponsored the Latino Achieve-ment Award, which was presented to Alba Perez, executive officer of the Office of Latino Affairs for the Iowa Department of Human Rights. Perez was selected as the recipient for the award because of her devo-tion throughout her entire adult to outreach and involvement of the La-tino community, and her inspiration to Latina women.She created the initial Latino Busi-

ness Association called Alianza; led a 2000 study that examined the La-tino community’s contributions to Central Iowa; and helped get Salsa Iowa and Iowa’s Latino Heritage Festival off of the ground.In addition, Perez, a survivor of

domestic violence, has publicly spoken about her experiences and testified to help change Iowa law to make a domestic abuse assault con-viction carry a mandatory two-day jail sentence. Recently, she was in-volved in the creation of the Latina Leadership Initiative of Greater Des Moines, a special training program created to give young Latina women the skills and access the need to be-come the next generation of leaders.

“We had another successful ban-quet and are thankful to our sup-porters because without them, this celebration would not have been possible,” Enriquez Henry said.For more information, contact Joe

Election Season is Over!What’s next?

As we are writing this column, the elec-tions are still a few days away, but by the time you read this, the votes should be counted and the new officials will be named. Some of us will be happy with the results, others will be disappointed that the candidates we had voted for and perhaps worked hard for, have lost. Poli-tics and election season can be stressful. Many people have the belief that the can-didate they support is the best and that candidate’s opponent is the worst! The fact is, someone wins and someone loses. They are chosen by voters, and the way it works is, the majority wins. Now it

is time work with those candidates who have won and keep them accountable.As good and responsible citizens, our

participation does not start and end at the voting booth. The officials we have elected have a responsibility to us, to lis-ten to us and to represent us. All of the newly elected officials will have websites and phone numbers available, for us, the people they represent, to contact them. They are obligated to represent everyone, not just the folks that voted for them or the folks who donated to their campaign. We all pay taxes and we all deserve to be heard and included. If they do not receive input from us, they do not know what our concerns are. If we don’t raise our voice, we won’t be heard. It is up to us to keep them accountable.In our next column, we will have a list

of contact numbers for our newly elected officials and we encourage you to stay in-formed and stay involved.We are both relieved the elections will

be over. Politics can be a nasty business. It can cause division in families, between friends and communities. Now is the time to accept the results and work with each other. Working together and with our newly elected officials, we make our community a better place. So, shake the hand of those who won and

wish them well. They will need our help and vigilance to succeed. Stay involved and engaged and let’s work together. We can do it - Yes we can!

LULAC celebra el Banquete de Liderazgo para Latinos de IowaPor Melissa Walker

Más de 300 personas se reunieron para celebrar a la comunidad latina en el se-gundo Banquete de liderazgo para latinos de Iowa.Seis personas fueron honoradas durante

el banquete, incluyendo una latina joven prometedora quien recibió una beca.“Una vez más la comunidad latina se

congregó para demostrar nuestra fuerza como comunidad y como segmento de la población de Iowa” dijo Joe Enriquez Henry, el presidente del Consejo 307 y director estatal de LULAC de Iowa.

“Nuestra organización tuvo el placer de encabezar esta celebración honrando los logros de estas personas quienes trabajan duro a favor de los latinos y todos los residentes de Iowa.”Los participantes incluyeron diferentes

miembros de la comunidad latina, lideres electos, candidatos para las oficinas es-tatales y líderes latinos de nivel nacional –Margaret Moran, la presidente de LU-LAC nacional, y Brent Wilkes, el direc-tor ejecutivo nacional. Los oradores hablaron de la necesidad

Premio de Héroe Latino – El Senador Estadounidense Tom Harkin, quien se jubilara después de representar a los resi-dentes de Iowa por más de 40 años. Har-kin ha abogado por residentes de Iowa y su trabajo se ha extendido a la comunidad latina, aquellos con necesidades especia-les y otros. También él apoyó las medidas que han mejorado las vidas de latinos y les ayudó a conseguir trabajos de mejor paga.Premio de Liderazgo Latino en Iowa –

Vanessa C. Marcano-Kelly, graduada de clase inaugural de la Iniciativa de Lider-azgo de Latinas de Des Moines, quien ahora trabaja con el Departamento de Servicios Humanos de Iowa. Marcano-Kelly has sido organizadora de comuni-dad con Ciudadanos de Iowa para Mejo-ramiento de la Comunidad, donde ella abogó de parte de la comunidad latina por asuntos que incluyen robo de sala-rios, reforma migratoria, derechos de vo-tantes, licencia de conducir y aumento de salario mínimo.

Premio de Beca para Líder Latino Emergente – María Mayorga de 25 años está en su año final en la Escuela de Derechos en la Universidad de Drake. Ella ha trabajado con algunos abogados de Des Moines. Mayorga trabajó en La Clínica Legal de Escuela de Derechos de Drake y fue asistente legal del Programa de Avance Legal de Inmigrantes Sobre-vivientes (ISA por sus siglas en ingles), donde ella ayudó a mujeres inmigrantes quienes han sido víctimas de abuso do-mestico a recibir asistencia legal y ref-erencias a consejeros. Mayorga es grad-uada de la Escuela Preparatoria Católica Dowling, es madre soltera de un hijo y

también ofrece servicios de traducción en su escuela preparatoria. Este es el primer año que se otorga este

premio.

El bufete de abogados de Sonia Parras patrocinó el Premio de Logro Latino, que fue presentado a Alba Pérez, directo-ra ejecutiva de la Oficina de Asuntos La-tinos para el Departamento de Derechos Humanos de Iowa.Pérez fue elegida como ganadora de este

premio por su devoción de toda la vida para crear alcance e involucrar a la comu-nidad latina y su inspiración a la mujer latina.Ella creó la primer Asociación Latina

de Negocios llamada Alianza; dirigió un estudio en el 2000 que examinó contri-buciones de la comunidad latina a Iowa Central; y ayudó a empezar Salsa Iowa y Festival de la herencia Latina.Además, Pérez es una sobreviviente de

violencia domestica y ella habló en pú-blico sobre su experiencia y testificó para ayudar a cambiar las leyes de Iowa para que el abuso domestico sea asalto con castigo mandatario de condena de dos días de cárcel. Recientemente, ella fue parte de la creación de la Iniciativa de Liderazgo para Latinas de Des Moines, el programa de entrenamiento especial creado para darles a las jóvenes latinas las habilidades y acceso necesario para convertirse en la siguiente generación de líderes.

Erica Ramírez una líder ex-cepcional en su comunidad

A menudo escuchamos noticias sobre jóvenes latinos quienes están haciendo una diferencia en sus comunidades. Columbus Junction en Iowa no es una ciudad grande, pero es aquí donde Erica Ramírez vive, estudia y trabaja. Ramírez es una de estas líderes latinas prometedoras quien está trabajando para hacer una diferencia en su comunidad. Erica Ramírez es una estudiante del último año de la prepara-

toria de Columbus Junction y ella creó Cultural Connections: The Bridge. The Bridge es un periódico pequeño publicado en tres idiomas. Ramírez nos explicó que ella desea establ-ecer una mejor comunicación entre miembros diversos de su comunidad. Además de hispanos, el grupo de minorías más grande, Columbus Junction también tiene muchos inmigran-tes de Chin, un estado de Burma. Ellos hablan el idioma que se llama Hakha Chin.“Además de ser publicado en ingles y español, es un desafío

inmenso encontrar los voluntarios para traducir los articulas a Hakha Chin,” Ramírez explica. Aunque es un obstáculo grande en el camino de Ramírez, ella no se rinde. La Conferencia Latina de Iowa fue formada en 1998 para “explorar las demográficas cambiantes y las dinámicas de las comunidades en Iowa,” “fortalecer las respuestas de los que hacen póliza, líderes de ne-gocio y organizaciones basadas en las comunidades,” y “proveer opor-tunidades para los líderes latinos que viven y trabajan en Iowa para conocerse.” Como parte de la Junta de Jóvenes

Latinos, puedo decir que mi expe-riencia en el 16 Conferencia Anual de Latinos de Iowa fue mayormente una oportunidad de conocer líderes latinos que son realmente influy-entes no solo en Iowa pero en el medio oeste y en la nación entera. Sus ideas de construir comunidades latinas y no latinas por igual con consejos que llevare para siempre y utilizare en The Bridge. Me gustaría compartir mi experiencia al conocer a la oradora principal Consuelo Cas-tillo Kickbusch.

Hay tanto que decir de la Sra. Con-suelo Castillo Kickbusch. Para comenzar, ella era la presentadora principal del día. Su discurso tuvo la habilidad de llevar a los que es-cuchaban en un viaje, como ella de-tallaba bien una imagen de las batal-las que niños de familias de bajos recursos o hijos de padres inmigran-tes pasan cuando asisten a la escuela o buscan una educación colegial. Ella cuenta de su niñez, una de diez hijos creada al lado de la frontera en un barrio de Laredo en Texas, con una madre trabajadora, y un padre que le enseño que aunque no hu-biera riquezas materiales que eran ricos de cultura, tradición, valores, y fe. Ella compartió con nosotros su sueño y su éxito en asistir al colegio y mucho más a pesar de la pobreza, discriminación, y el analfabetismo.Consuelo entro al Ejercito de los

Estados Unidos (Army) después de graduarse de la Universidad de Har-din Simmons. En sus dos décadas de servicio, ella fue la mujer his-pana de más alto rango en Campo de Soporte de Combate en el Army de Estados Unidos. Después de su servicio, Consuelo fundo Servicios para Logros Educativos Inc. Para preparar líderes en el futuro. Ella uso los materiales que fabricaba como videos, discos compactos de audio, y su libro, Viaje al Futuro: Un mapa de Éxito para la Juventud como herramientas para reforzar sus mensajes. Hoy, Consuelo ha compartido su

historia con más de un millón de niños y sus padres a través de los Estados Unidos y en escuelas, cole-gios, universidades, corporaciones, e institutos del gobierno en otros países. En hacerlo, fue elogiada en el programa de CNN Latinos en América, el programa de Univisión de Don Francisco Presenta, Lifetime Network, Radio Publico Nacional, el programa sindicado de Hispanos

Hoy y el programa de Latination en el American Latino Televisión. Consuelo también ha salido en la revista de Negocios Hispanos como parte de los 100 latinos más influy-entes en América, Revista O, Latina-Style, Vanidades, y la revista Glam-our. En adición, a ella se le presento el Legión of Merit, la Medalla del Servicio de Defensa Nacional, ha sido recipiente cuatro veces de la Medalla Meritorio de Servicio, y re-cipiente del Premio de Liderazgo de Toastmaster. Ella ha sido honrada con el prestigioso premio de Mujer Nacional por el Instituto de Lideraz-go Nacional de Hispanas (NHLI) y en el 2012, Consuelo se le otorgo la Medalla de Excelencia por el Insti-tuto Caucus Congresional Hispano. Fue un gran honor de haber cono-

The Iowa Latino Conference was formed in 1998 to “explore the changing demographics and dynam-ics of Latino communities in Iowa,” “strengthen the responsiveness of policy makers, business leaders and community-based organizations,” and “provide networking opportuni-ties for Latino leaders who live and work in Iowa.”As part of the Latino/a Youth Sum-

mit, I can say that my experience at the 16th annual Iowa Latino Confer-ence was primarily an opportunity to network among truly influential Latino leaders of not only Iowa but the Midwest and the entire nation. Their ideas on building Latino and non-Latino communities alike are pieces of advice I will keep forever and utilize in The Bridge. I would like to share the story of an inspiring person I met there, Consuelo Cas-tillo Kickbusch.Consuelo Castillo KickbuschThere is so much to say about Mrs.

Consuelo Castillo Kickbusch. To begin, she was the keynote speaker of the day. Her speech had the abil-ity to take listeners on a journey, as she accurately painted a picture of the struggles that children of low-in-come families or children of immi-grant parents face when they attend school or seek a college education. She recounts her childhood, one of ten children raised along the border in a Texan barrio in Laredo, with a hardworking mother, and a father who taught her that despite their lack of material wealth, they were rich in culture, tradition, values and faith. She shared with us her dream and success of attending college and much more despite poverty, dis-crimination and illiteracy.Consuelo entered the U.S. Army

after graduating from Hardin Sim-mons University. In her two decades of service, she became the highest-ranking Hispanic woman in the Combat Support Field of the U.S.

Army. After her service, Consuelo founded Educational Achievement Services Inc. to prepare leaders of the future. She uses the materials she produces such as videos, audio CD’s, and her book, Journey to the Future: A Roadmap for Success for Youth as tools to reinforce her mes-sages. Today, Consuelo has shared her

story with over one million children and their parents across the U.S and abroad at hundreds of schools, col-leges, universities, corporations, and government institutions. In doing so, she has been praised on CNN’s Latino in America, Univision’s Don Francisco Presenta, the Lifetime Network, National Public Radio, the syndicated television program His-panics Today, and American Latino Television’s Latination program. Consuelo has also been featured in Hispanic Business magazine’s

100 Most Influential Hispanics in America, O Magazine, LatinaStyle, Vanidades, and Glamour magazine. In addition, she has been presented with the Legion of Merit, the Na-tional Defense Service Medal, she is a four-time recipient of the Meri-torious Service Medal, and a recipi-ent of the Toastmaster’s Leadership Award. Very often we hear on the news of young Latinos making a difference in their communities. Columbus Junction in Iowa is not a big city, but it is here where Erica Ramirez lives, stud-ies and works. Ramirez is one of those budding Latino leaders who are making difference in a community she lives in. Erica Ramirez is a 17 year old senior from Columbus Junc-

tion Community High School who created Cultural Connec-tions: The Bridge. The Bridge is a small newspaper published in three languages. Ramirez explained that she wanted to es-tablish better communication between diverse members of her community. In addition to large Hispanic minority group, Co-lumbus Junction also has a large number of immigrants from Chin state of Burma. They speak Hakha Chin.“Besides being published in English and Spanish, it is an im-

mense challenge to find volunteers to translate articles into Hakha Chin,” Ramirez explains. Even though it is a big obsta-cle to overcome, Ramirez had not given up. She keeps looking for translators while reporting about events and people of her community and writing about special assistance provides by different groups and organizations available to immigrants in their native language.The Bridge, named after a well-known attraction in Colum-

Save the date to attend a one-day con-ference on Latino civic engagement in Iowa. The ¡Adelante! conference, sponsored by Iowa State University Ex-tension -- Community and Economic Development, will be held on Thurs-day, November 13 from 10 am to 4 pm at the Hotel Pattee in Perry. The conference will bring together

municipal officials, civic leaders, and community advocates throughout Iowa to learn about successful capacity-building projects for members of the Latino community, share our stories of successes and challenges, and spark further conversation in our home com-munities. Specifically, the conference will touch

upon three interrelated themes: advo-cacy, engagement and leadership. Guest panelists include:

Dr. Timothy Steigenga, professor of political science and chair of social sciences and humanities at the Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic Uni-

versity. Dr. Steigenga was integral in founding Corn Maya Inc., a community based organization for and by Guate-malan Mayans and El Sol, a neighbor-hood resource center created in partial response to conflict over day laborers in Jupiter, Florida. Dr. Steigenga will dis-cuss the role that resource centers can play in addressing community-wide is-sues and how they can act as a positive catalyst for city engagement with immi-grant communities.

Axel Fuentes and Carlos Rich, community organizers working with Rural Community Workers Alliance in Milan, Missouri. Mr. Fuentes and Mr. Rich work to improve immigrant worker health, prevent wage theft, and enhance community integration of mi-grant workers in meat-packing and poultry processing communities. They will share their experiences of the con-ditions of migrants working in hog and poultry confinements, the challenges these industries pose to community in-

tegration, and the importance of advo-cacy with migrants for community and economic development.

Alba Perez, Executive Officer for the Office of Latino Affairs for the State of Iowa and co-founder of the Latina Leadership Institute, a leadership train-ing program designed to prepare young Latina professionals for service in the greater Des Moines Area. Ms. Perez will discuss the importance of identi-fying and preparing young Latinos for civic leadership positions and the need for a culturally sensitive curriculum that takes into account participants’ personal and community histories. Early speculation puts Hillary Clinton and Marco Rubio as favorites to make a run for the 2016 presidency repre-senting their respective parties. We might yet see more of them in Iowa in the months to come.

Alvino Peña, a Quad Cities boxing leg-end, was loved by many. Some looked up to him, others saw him as a hero, but above all everyone will miss this wonderful man who changed the lives of so many people. Even though Alvino Peña is not with us anymore, his spirit and his teachings live on through others. Mr. Leonard Over-street, a coach in Peña’s Davenport Box-ing Club, is one of those people whose live was changed thanks to Mr. Peña and now he is the one coaching and sharing Alvino Peña’s legacy with younger generations.To continue Peña’s legacy alive and to

maintain the boxing club going there will be Amateur Boxing Show on Saturday November, 15, 2014 at the LULAC Club, located at 4224 Ricker Hill Road in Dav-enport, IA. The doors will open at 5:00 PM and the fights will begin at 6:00 PM.“What we get from our community it’s

how we survive,” Mr. Overstreet ex-plained.There will be between 15 to 20 bouts on

the night of the fundraiser. Also, everyone attending can participate in 50/50 raffle and tacos and other treats will be available to purchase.“We would like people to come out and

support us,” Mr. Overstreet said.

Alvino Peña helped many young people find their way in life. It is great to know that his lifework will not be forgotten, but rather it will live one through other peo-ple. With the main event staring after mid-night on Saturday, Invicta Fighting Championships took over The River-Center for their nine fight Invicta FC 9: Honchak vs Hashi event. And if you were to judge the event based

on attendance in the downtown Daven-port, IA venue, you may have given the event an F. But those that did come out to watch hometown Miletich Fighting Systems member and current flyweight champion Barb Honchak (10-2) defend her title and those who streamed the event live on UFC Fight Pass, UFC’s still growing digital streaming service, witnessed some of the bloodiest Invicta FC battles to date and definitely got their money’s worth.“It was a great night of fights,” said

Invicta FC owner, Shannon Knapp. “I don’t think I’ve seen that much blood in a long time.” The most noise from the crowd obvi-

ously came during the main event where Barb Honchak grinded her way into a unanimous decision win over Japanese challenger, Takayo Hashi. “I haven’t had a grindy fight like that

for a while,” said Honchak. “My last two were full striking but in this fight I felt like it’s what I had to do.”

Honchak also talked about how much training with UFC’s #1 women’s bantam-weight contender Cat Zingano, who was also in attendance, helped with this fight. “It was really good to get out there and feel my strength against another woman of her caliber,” explained Honchak. “To be able to hold my own against someone like Cat gives me confidence for my next fight.” Speaking of her next fight, with the an-

nouncement of Vanessa Porto and Rox-anne Modafferi fighting on Invicta FC 10 on December 5th, Honchak will most likely get the winner of that match. And having fought both already, Honchak seemed ready for whomever Invicta puts on her plate. “It’s been a longer time since I’ve fought Roxanne than I have Porto and she’s improved her game quite a bit” said Honchak. “That being said, getting through Porto is tough. Either one I would rematch gladly.”This card was a first for an Invicta FC

event to be in a new town and marked the debut of some new talent on the roster and Knapp seemed very pleased with the results. “It was amazing,” said Knapp. “I think some of those first fights really kicked off the night off well and set the pace for the evening and it was great how this town really embraced us.”
