CHAPEL NEWSYou will see from the leaflet tucked in this magazine that we will be holding a Special Healing Service at the Chapel on the 11th September at 6-30 p.m we do hope that you will come along and join in. Many of you will know how Our Lord loves to heal and
for the last 2000 odd years countless numbers of people have been healed by the laying on of hands and prayer. When Jesus was on the earth he called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every
disease and sickness (Matthew 10 v 1) Just before he ascended into heaven he said they will place their hands on sick people and they will get well, Mark 16 v 18. From
the time that the Holy Spirit descended onto the disciples at Pentecost, God has carried on healing the sick, sometimes there is a miraculous healing and sometimes the healing is more gradual taking days, weeks or even months. Edith Peters, Janet’s
grandmother was miraculously healed 3 times during her lifetime. If you are interested in reading her testimony contact either Janet or me
(Fay) and we will get a copy to you.1 Corinthians 12 v 7 – 11 says Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is
given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between
spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of the Spirit and he gives them
to each one just as he determines.Jo and Susie Marriott have been healing the sick through prayer and the laying on of hands since the 1980’s when they were resident at Ashburnham Place and we are very fortunate to have them leading our service on the 11th September.
Many of you will I am sure remember them.We will be holding a second Healing Service on the 9th October when we have Revd. Lesley Harding leading our Service. Some of you will remember Lesley from when she ran a nursery in the village. She married another Minister and together they have successfully been running churches with large congregations
where they have continued Healing Ministry. Our third Healing Service will be held on the 13th November and will be led by
Revd. Eric Delve.Again Revd. Eric Delve is very well known for Healing Ministry. He started his Healing Ministry at Burrswood Hospital in Groombridge and then was Minister
at a very large church in Maidstone.
We look forward to seeing you at our Healing Services.

September 2016 – New BeginningsSeptember is a time of new beginnings for many people, and our service on 4 September is going to remember our children and young people who are going back to school, and in particular those who are starting school for the first time or changing schools – a time of change that needs courage.
September can also be a return from holiday for some with a new resolve to change something in our life or to decide to do something different. Here I have a suggestion for you, how about joining Nikki and me on Monday 26 September when we are starting the 7 week Christianity Explored course at our house, the Granary? It involves a meal, a short DVD about an aspect of Christianity and then an open discussion. You would be welcome.
Maybe for some of us we are facing something which we are really worried about. If you are this quote which I recently found might help, “It is OK to be scared. Being scared means you’re about to do something really, really brave.”
I particularly like the final words of Matthew’s Gospel, as Jesus is about to leave his disciples and return to heaven, when he says, “Surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:20.

by Ian McEwen.
"On the hottest day of the summer of 1935, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis sees her sister Cecilia strip off her
clothes and plunge into the fountain in the garden of their country house. Watching her too is Robbie Turner
who, like Cecilia, has recently come down from Cambridge. By the end of that day, the lives of all three will have

Pastoral Care for Ashburnham
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be
afraid.” — John 14:27
Sometimes we face particular crises in our lives and we need help and support. As a Church St Peter’s seeks to reflect the healing compassion of Christ, and through our Pastoral Care team we aim to provide comfort and support, to those who are sick in hospital or at home, or recently bereaved, or who are isolated through a lack of mobility or old age, during times of physical, emotional or spiritual need. We can offer contact with a member of our pastoral team who can visit, as well offering prayer, home Holy Communion or hospital visiting if required.
We firmly believe that prayer does have an effect, and we welcome requests for prayer. We have two prayer points – one outside under the main Welcome notice at the foot of the church pathway and the other inside the church entrance door. There are cards and pens available for use. You are also welcome to contact myself as vicar or a member of the pastoral team direct. Requests will be prayed for on a regular basis and held in strict confidence.
Please get in touch with us for an initial discussion if you would like our help.Vicar: Rev Paul McVeagh 01424 532443 [email protected] Pastoral Care Coordinator: John Cormode 01424 8484125 [email protected] Care Coordinator: Storm Hann 01424 893130 [email protected] members of the team: John French, Catherine Duggleby, Jennifer Oldroyd, Richard Hann.

Parish Magazine September 1916Sunday School Treat This was held on August 11th at the Vicarage. Much later this year in order that the Vicar might be present and renew his acquaintance with children and parents. The day was fine, still and warm without much sun. Tea was at 4pm for the children and sixty-six sat down to it. Afterwards the grown-ups were entertained in the same way. Mr. Peters, in spite of his great age, was present for the greater part of the time. Thus the ex-churchwarden of Ashburnham’s distant past and the present People’s Warden Mr. George Dawes were able to meet and discuss the present state of affairs in comparison with past days. Cricket, sports and the Prize giving filled up the rest of the time. The Vicar in a short speech expressed his happiness at being with them once more, Mrs Ridel, in the absence of Mr Ridel, proposed “three cheers for Mr. and Mrs. Sturt.” In thanking, the Vicar said how much he owed to Mrs Sturt who had taken charge of the Penhurst Sunday School and to Miss Mary and Miss Emily Dawes for their work at Ashburnham. Lady Ashburnham-Clement gave as usual a large contribution to the cost of the prizes.
Flower Show TriumphsVery many congratulations to all those who – despite the wet summer – managed to find exhibits for the Flower Show on 30 July. There were some amazing entries in the children’s classes, and some brilliant photos in the arts and crafts section. Parish Council News
Flower Show and Country FairThe Parish Council was delighted to learn that £2,550 was raised towards the cost of the new village hall and congratulate all concerned who worked so hard to stage the event. Nearly 400 adults paid for admission so that the number of people, including children, on the field would have been well in excess of 500. Ashburnham & Penhurst punching above its weight yet again!
Dates of next meetings Council meeting: Wed 14th September 2016 at 7.30 pm in the Sports Pavilion.Planning Committee: Wed 12th October 2016 at 7.30 pm in the Sports Pavilion if there are any new planning matters to consider. Please see the parish website for up to date information.
Members of the public are encouraged to attend these meetings and there is an agenda slot near the start of the meeting for members of the public to address the Council.
Planning applications Planning applications are now being posted on the parish website rather than here.

The organising committee would like to thank everybody who helped make the 2016 Ashburnham and Penhurst Flower Show and
Country Fair, Fun Dog Show and evening event such a success. We’re proud to announce that the profit from the whole day was a grand total of £2,550. All the profits will go towards the new village
hall project. Very well done to all who helped make the day’s events such a resounding success.
We are already planning for 2017's event and would like to hear from you if there are any flower show classes you would like us to
consider adding to the schedule or if you have any comments about the day in general.
Contact Louise Roberts via email: [email protected]
Thank you again for coming and supporting the event
VILLAGE HALL UPDATE The plans for the new village hall have now been finalised and we await the decision of the planners. If you would like to view the plans they are
available on the parish noticeboards outside the Chapel and at the Pound, and on the noticeboards in the old hall, pavilion, church hall, and Ash Tree
Inn. Updates on the planners' decision will be posted online.
Meanwhile fund-raising for the new hall project continues. See the separate report on the Country Fair and Flower Show and watch this space and the village website for news of the next fundraising event.

The MI Golf Open This was balled out once again back in the early summer and 14 gents played a fine
array of strokes. It would be fair to say that onlookers were astonished by MIs direc0onal sense. Some shots were created out of nothing and indeed came to
nothing. The compe00on was won by Chris Sinden and Robin Ratcliffe with a prely mean score of 47 over 9 holes....small recompense for Robin, missing out on the "Brighton play off final that wasn't to be" later that same aqernoon, but a mighty victory all the same. The winner over the "Nearest the hole" compe00on was yours truly. I was actually in a bunker and nearer to a rabbit hole but nobody got closer -‐even Mr Ratcliffe with a rebound off a sturdy cleq chestnut fence was further away......to coin a phrase from Mr Spock ..."it's golf Jim but not as we know it".
MI’s last “footballing” standAshburnham Place 1 (Proudfoot)
MI 0Straight aqer the Euro 16 final , scarcely before Ronaldo was up walking again,
Ashburnham and Penhurst’s spor0ng cream came together, head to head, to selle old scores and aspire to football supremacy for another year.
A number of MI failed late fitness tests, it was later announced that the majority of the team lacked fitness! Where they fell short in this respect they were well ahead of
the game in terms of effort and doggedness! With just 9 players MI played a revolu0onary new system of 8-‐0-‐0, no fancy midfield
diamonds for these boys, more a stout defensive wall of Ashburnham bricks. In the first half MI managed to encroach into ACTs half three 0mes-‐ The rest of the
0me shot aqer shot reigned in on Robin Ratcliffe’s goal. Only athle0cism (Yes, athle0cism!) spared MI a double figure defeat. The second half was best described as
total football from “The boys of the Place” , whereas “The boys with no pace” defended stoically-‐Churchill would have been proud of you MI.
It was a good night and a close result, but next year MI will need to find ways of countering the slinky fluidity and ball control of ACT. All sugges0ons would be
welcome in the weeks to come. Thanks should be extended to Ashburnham Place, and Andy Proudfoot in par0cular, for hos0ng and humouring us.

POST PAMPERING OPPORTUNITY• Do you live near to a fingerpost?• Do you have access to hot soapy water?• Do you have 10 minutes available to “commune” with your post every 3
months? If you have answered “yes” to all three of these ques0ons then you could become an Ashburnham and Penhurst Fingerpost Pamperer. Our new fingerposts, as well as the ones that have been repaired over recent years, need regular cleaning and checking for wear and tear. The Parish Council would be very pleased for a small number of villagers to voluntarily adopt one of our 12 posts. In the long run, cas0ng a loving eye over each one will save the community a considerable amount of money; so let’s look aqer these special features of our villages. Could you email Richard Hann at [email protected] or on 01424 893130 if you are able and willing? Thank you.
"105" IS THE NEW NUMBER TO CALL IF YOU GET A POWER CUTLaunching in September 2016, 105 is a single helpline service for householders
anywhere in Britain to report power failures or safety concerns, or to get informa0on during a blackout.
Currently, consumers are supposed to contact their local electricity network operator if there is a problem. However many people contact their energy supply firm instead, or don't know the 11-‐digit contact number for their local electricity
network operator. Calls to 105 are free of charge and will put you through to your local electricity network operator. You can call 105 from landlines and most mobile phones.
