PrecastDetailing Manual

Page 2: Hollowcore WALLING Manual

Hanson supplies precast products from three modern factories located in the Sydney metropolitan area.

Structural and architectural precast panels, hollowcore floor and wall panels, beams and columns are all part of the extensive range of products that Hanson provides.

Hanson can offer architectural and structural precast concrete solutions for most building applications.

This detailing manual is to assist the designer in preparing the design documentation when using our products. The details shown are those that have been typically used on past projects. Should you have an application that is not covered here then simply contact us and we will advise you of a possible solution.

Detailed design is usually prepared by the Structural Engineer responsible for the structure as a whole. Hanson disclaims all liability for loss or damage where product information contained in the manual is used without obtaining expert advice on the suitability for use in your specific application.

Hollowcore walling This detailing manual is to assist the designer in preparing the design documentation

when using Hanson Precast’s hollowcore walling. The details shown are those that

have been typically used on past projects. Should you have an application that is not covered here then simply contact us and we will advise you of a possible solution.

We have also included in this manual an explanation on the more common topics

when using hollowcore walling.

Hanson disclaims all liability for loss or damage where product information contained

in the manual is used without obtaining expert advice on the suitability for use in your specific application.

General Hollowcore wall panels are cast on long line casting beds and are cut to length to suit

the wall height – or span in the case of horizontal panels.

In developing a framing plan using hollowcore wall panels the principal considerations are the span and the modular width. The panel thickness depends on

the structural requirements of the loading and the span. The fire resistance period

also determines the required effective thickness of the panel.

Dimensions Hollowcore wall panels are a nominal 1200 wide by 150, 200 or 250 thick. They are designed to fit into a 1200mm grid layout. Closing panels of non modular dimensions

are accommodated using special width panels made by longitudinal sawing or by

purpose casting of a panel.

Maximum recommended panel lengths are as shown in the wall panel design chart

HW012 and HWO13.

Cantilevers Hollowcore wall panels may be used for cantilevers projecting above the structure

and roof line to form parapets and the like. The extent of any cantilever is limited by

the stresses induced in the cantilever under lateral load. In practice, cantilevers are limited also by the need to restrict deformation arising from differential temperature

on the faces of the panel.

Fire resistance Panels with fire resistance levels of 90:90:90 to 240:240:240 covering structural

adequacy, integrity and insulation are available. The level of fire resistance is based on Tests numbered FS1462 and FS1536 conducted at the National Building

Technology Centre, North Ryde NSW.

Protection of the steel supporting structure and the panel connections against heat caused by fire may be necessary dependent on the building design.

To guard against outward collapse of the wall panels during a fire and to comply with the Building Code of Australia clause C1.11 welding of fixing clips should be carried

out to the design engineer’s requirements.

Service openings Standard 820mm wide personnel doors which fit into the 1200mm module are

available. Various size window openings can be cut to order but a width of 1200mm

is recommended.

Page 8: Hollowcore WALLING Manual

Penetrations for other service openings may be precut to order or can be cut on site.

Roller door openings are best designed in during the detailing process with panels

cut to size prior to delivery.

Gable end and corner panels Panel end cutting can be angled for gables and panels are cut longitudinally to make

narrow width closing panels. Corner panels are made with a matching exposed aggregate or smooth finish on the exposed edge.

Tolerances Construction tolerances must be allowed for in developing a layout. Tolerance in

panel length is accommodated by allowing a variable gap at the bottom grouted

support of a vertical panel and/or fixing a cover flashing or capping at the top of the panel. Tolerance in panel width is accommodated by a variation in nominal joint width

to maintain the module along the wall.

Horizontal panels are generally supported at their ends; hence the visual effects of temperature change should be considered where long panels are used.

The wall panel manufacturing tolerances that should be allowed for when detailing a project are:

Length ± 10 mm Width (1200mm) + 3 mm - 6 mm

Cut width ± 10 mm

Thickness (average) ± 3 mm

Squareness of end ± 6 mm Ferrule location ± 20 mm

Strand location ± 3 mm

Differential bowing between adjacent panels of the same length ± 15 mm

Openings location ± 20 mm

dimension ± 20 mm squareness ± 10 mm
