Structural Framing Systems have become established, in recent years, to provide support to both external claddings and internal linings on institutional, commercial, and industrial buildings.

Our system is designed to provide cladding support either using infill panels, set within the structural frame, or continuous framing, positioned outside the main structural frame.

The framing is supplied in simple components, cut to length, assembled on site and installed using self tapping fixings.

The quick installation of the SFS enables the external cladding to be fixed and provides a dry internal environment for the internal trades to proceed.

We offer a range of stud sections, as detailed on page(s) 12-15, which range from 85mm to 300mm wide with associated tracks to suit.

The Albion structural framing system is the choice for external cladding support on industrial, commercial, residential and institutional buildings.

Early involvement in the design stage brings our technical advice and expertise to the design team, assisting the team to arrive at economic, practical solutions.

We have a selection of projects from the many developments we have completed to indicate the scope and versatility of the Albion Structural Framing System.

Sandwell College, West Bromwich

A prestigious project (featured on the front cover of this brochure), which provides an attractive, striking and modern appearance to the West Bromwich skyline.

The development will accommodate up to 10,000 full and part time students.

The college sits in a predominant situation in the centre of Sandwell, in the West Midlands and is clearly visible from the adjacent M5 motorway.

Kingswood Health Centre, Bristol

Area of SFS 1100m2.

A new local NHS health centre serving the centre of Kingswood, Bristol. An interesting building with a circular central core.

The main walls, generally with a rendered finish were constructed using 150mm deep SFS as an infill system.

The central core, which had a Bauclad finish was constructed using Albion structural framing set outside the line of the structure supporting the curved line of the finished wall.

The elevations includes approx 5000m2 of Albion SFS framing both to the flat elevations and the circular walls of the rotunda.

Designed by Albion, approximately 70% of the SFS was provided in panellised form, with one side of the panels lined with cementitious board.

Panels were assembled in our own factory and the board fixed prior to despatch.

Considerations were given to the transport and installation of the panels, resulting in a system that enabled easy movement and fixing on site.

The remainder of the area was supplied in component form, phased to suit the site program and delivered in clearly marked bundles and components.

Rotherham Civic Centre

Cold rolled framing provided the structural support to the brickwork areas on the elevations.

Designed by Albion and supplied in component form for our client to build into panels prior to delivery to site.

All Saints Academy, Cheltenham.

Area of SFS 2,200 m2. A new school in Cheltenham for the Diocese of Clifton.

Albion structural framing system was used to support differing types of cladding. From the copper clad conical chapel structure projecting from the flat roof, support to the internal inclined wall and support to the classroom windows on the external elevations.

A project that highlights the versatility of the Albion SFS product.

Cabot House, Bristol A multi use development in the centre of Bristol comprising offices and residential blocks.

Approximately 5000m2 of Albion structural framing system supplied to this prestigious project.

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

06

Albion framing systems can be supplied to site cut to length and in phases to suit the construction program. We would recommend that only quality installation sub contractors are employed. If necessary Albion are happy to recommend sub contractors who are familiar with the system.

Once the system is installed and weather tight the lining boards can be fixed on the inside to provide a dry internal environment. Whilst dry trades proceed, external wet trades such as brick or blockwork can proceed independently.

A wide variety of cladding systems can be fixed to, or restrained by, the vertical studs. Presented below are pictorial views of various type of cladding systems, to show the versatility that can be achieved with claddings ranging from brickwork to composite panels, timber and tiling. These illustrations are only typical and the cladding build up will depend on thermal, acoustic and fire protection requirements.

Framing cladding systems have been tried and tested over recent years and performance information is now generally available. Refer to the cladding manufacturer for further information.

The Albion structural framing system is supplied in component form for site assembly.

The pages we present show typical details of how the system is constructed.

The details are extracted from the Albion SFS booklet which is available to specifiers and installers.

Connections are simple, and formed using the SFS components and self tapping screws.

Stud and track sections are manufactured to exact lengths and delivered, phased if required, in clearly marked bundles.

Albion SFS is a non loadbearing system designed only to resist wind load and support lightweight wall claddings. No vertical loading from the main structure (floors or roofs) can be transmitted or supported by the studs.

To prevent such load transfer, the top track is allowed to deflect (usually 25mm), independent of the stud below, using a deflection head bracket (or slotted cleat in heavier loaded situations.

Deflection head brackets are available to suit 100, 150 and 200mm deep stud sections.

Bottom track detail.

Window head and cill connections to the jamb studs, for the smaller sized window, are formed using short sections of stud section, tek screwed into position.

Larger windows may require the design of composite sections, multiple single members which are site assembled to form larger, stiffer components.

Similar to detail 5 but here the connecting or “cripple” stud is extended to the top track section providing additional stiffness.

For larger windows, more substantial lintel and cills may be required as shown.

Stud and track sections are used to form a rigid box profile which provides stiffness and strength in for both vertical load and wind loading.

The design of the vertical members may dictate that lateral restraint is required at either mid or at third height positions. Restraint is provided in the form of block and bracing, as shown.

Blocks, from stud section, are cut and inserted every third stud bay and at end bay positions. The blocks have a snug fit between the studs and tied together using 38*1.0mm plate screw fixed both sides as shown.

STUD SECTION PROPERTIES TO BS5950 PART 5 : 1998

Albion stud and track sections are designed to be used in combination to form an infill wall support system, set inside the main structural frame or a continuous wall support system set outside the main structural frame

All sections are manufactured from pre-hot dipped galvanised steel strip S450, having a yield strength of 450N/mm2 and a Z275 galvanized coating.

Stud sections are primarily used as vertical members resisting lateral forces, track sections as top and bottom runners. Stud and tracks are used singly or in compounded members to provide support framing around openings.

Section properties listed on these pages have been calculated in accordance with BS 5950: Part 5: 1998. The value es denotes the shift in neutral axis due to axial load. A positive value indicates a shift away from the web.

TRACK SECTION PROPERTIES TO BS5950 PART 5 : 1998

Section properties listed on these pages have been calculated in accordance with BS EN 1993-1-3:2006.

LOAD SPAN TABLES IN ACCORDANCE WITH BS 5950 PART 5 : 1998

16

Load tables are based on the design procedures in BS5950Part 5:1998

Working loads are noted in kN/m2 for the span, centres of 400, 500,600 and 1000mm and deflection limitations of span / 200,250,300 and 360. They apply to both pressure and suction forces.

Working loads, noted in kN/m2, apply to lateral wind forces only. A load factor of 1.4 on ultimate capacity has been adopted.

No axial load is included i.e. all sections are non load bearing except for the self weight of lightweight claddings.

All studs are assumed adequately restrained at head and base and are fully restrained by claddings on both flanges.

Load tables are based on the design procedures in BS5950Part 5:1998

Working loads are noted in kN/m2 for the span, centres 400, 500,600 and 1000mm and deflection limitations of span / 200,250,300 and 360. They apply to both pressure and suction forces.

Working loads, noted in kN/m2, apply to lateral wind forces only. A load factor of 1.5 on ultimate capacity has been adopted.

No axial load is included i.e. all sections are non load bearing except for the self weight of lightweight claddings.

All studs are assumed adequately restrained at head and base and are fully restrained by claddings on both flanges.

NOTE: These load tables are provided for guidance and prelimary sizing of studs.

Before final sections are chosen, a detailed design, adopting appropriate load combinations, should be undertaken. Refer to BS EN 1990: 2002 and associated National Annexe.
