Performing Arts Magnet The worldwide famous Per-

forming Arts Magnet at Holly-

wood High has 4 great pro-

grams to offer in addition to

the excellent one in academics.

The Dance program, run by

Mrs. Goldshein, has proven

itself over and over through its

dance recitals. The drama

productions are a tribute to

Mrs. Bridges and to the stu-

dents' dedication to the arts

and to Hollywood. For those

passionate about music, there

is a wonderful vocal and instru-

mental music program, that

our new teacher Mr. Sexton is

running with an unprecedent-

Design/Technology. Students

who do not have the voca-

tion to be in front of the audi-

ence can still be part of the

show by working the stage,

For the month of December, Mr. Vil-

lasenor, PSA Counselor is challenging all of

our students to attend all 15 days in De-

cember before the long

winter break. Those that

meet the 15 day challenge

will be eligible to win priz-

es. Parents we ask that

you support our attend-

ance challenge by making sure your chil-

dren come to school every day and to plan

vacations according to the school calen-

dar and not take

extended vacation

days.

Hollywood High School and the District

encourages all students to come school

each day by rewarding them with passes to

events, gift certificates, movie tickets,

amusement park passes and IPADs. The

only thing the student must do to win is

come to school every day and attend all

classes. Each month there is a new chance

to win any of the prizes mentioned above.

Hollywood High School knows its 3 B’s :

Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful. You

will see this posted in every classroom and

around the school as “Sheik Keys to Suc-

cess.” It is one way that we support our

school rules and regulations which provide

safety and discipline on our campus as part

of our Safe School Plan.

At the last faculty meeting on Tuesday,

November 5, 2013, teachers worked in

groups to address any needed updates for

this school year. The 3 B’s cover the class-

room, hallways, cafeteria, quad, restrooms,

offices, auditorium, locker rooms, the gym

and playing fields. Overall areas of concern

were:

Leaving the classroom clean

Putting your trash away

Cell phones

Charging cell phones in the classroom

Electronic Devices

Cursing

Listening to others

Loitering

Tagging

Respect school property and others

serves to facilitate those rules and con-

structs that the high school is trying to

impart upon the student populous. At

Hollywood High School, home of the

Sheiks, the administration, faculty and

staff embrace the credo, “Be Safe, Be Re-

sponsible, Be Respectful.” While this may

be simplistic in nature, it is embodiment of

When considering the development of a

positive secondary school behavior support

plan, one that includes a discipline module

as well, it is crucial that the “It takes a

village” mentality be incorporated. While

the safety and well-being of students

attending school is important, we cannot

ignore the student home life as well, as it

the overall approach to school safety and

discipline. The approach that we follow is

best described in the School-Wide Positive

Behavior Support and Discipline Plan. Our

school in partnership with a supportive

community and parents seek to provide a

safe learning environment.

“Those that meet the 15

day challenge will be

eligible to win prizes.”

Being on time

Staying in class

Using quiet voice

Turning in your AUP forms

Following rules in the library

Carrying your school ID, having it

available and showing it upon re-

quest

We are continuing to address these areas,

including the dress code, in our School-

Wide Positive Support Discipline Plan.

Final changes in the Discipline Plan will be

approved by the SBM Committee.

Common Core State Standards

The transition to instruction based on

the Common Core State Standards con-

tinues at Hollywood High during the fall

semester as all teachers engaged in

professional development to explore

the new Smarter Balanced assessment.

This assessment will replace the CST to

measure student achievement

beginning in 2014—15. HHS teachers

practiced taking the math and English

assessments to see what type of ques-

tions their students will be required to

answer. Then in November, Math and

English teachers worked together by

department to analyze the new stand-

ards further and began the process of

creating and sharing lessons. Our English

teachers plan to meet again in early

January to look at their students’

work and discuss how their Com-

mon Core lessons could be made

more effective. Our math teachers

will be using common lessons

among courses and will be sharing

feedback at the next department

professional development.
