20. Briefly state historical and/or architectural impwtance (include dater, events, and personsassociated with the site when known):

The Department of Water and Power power station is a fine example of Art Deco architecture of the 1930's. Station lo is a small building for such a use, with excellent stylized ornamentation and well defined verticality, yet its massing and scale still dominate the'streetscape. In the Thirties, energy was deemed king, and such structures reflect the community's preoccupation with modernizing its image and raising the standard of living.

SIGNIFICANCE 19. Briefly state historical and/or architectural importance (include dates, events, and persons associated with the site.)

This late addition to Highland Avenue reflects a trend by builders to enploy a number of 'stage set' designs: past architectural styles grafted into the massing of a more modern buildings. The imaye of Hollywood as the movie capitol was being strengthened, and boosters wanted a diverse sophisticated facade to attract visitors. The building carefully combines the Regency Revival style with the Moderne style. While a simple structure, it is an elegant addition to Highland Ave.
