YEAR 2 VE DAY CELEBR ATIONS. . .

What a super day Year 2 had just before half term! To finish their history topic on World War 2 they celebrated the end of the

war in true VE Day style. Dressed as evacuees, they made gas mask boxes and baked carrot biscuits from a wartime rationing

recipe. Then they were delighted to welcome some grandparents who told them about their experiences growing up in the war.

Mr Came also came in to talk about Theo’s great grandfather and great uncles and their important wartime roles. The afternoon

finished with a jolly tea party accompanied with the children singing wartime songs.

“I liked baking the carrot biscuits. They were nice and crunchy.”

- Skye

“We liked learning how to make bunting best.”

- Lucy and Autumn

“I enjoyed listening to the grandparents. It was very

Interesting.” - Charlie

“I really enjoyed stitching the teddies.” - Daniel M

THE HOLMWOOD HOUSE G ENERAL ELECTION 2017 . . .

The Prep School returned from the half-term break to election madness. All Prep School children had learned about the election,

party politics and policies in PSHCE Citizenship lessons before half-term with Year 7s and 8s also learning about left and right

wing ideology and different voting systems. Bring on election week!

Year 8s, Sam B, Matthew B, Tamunodukoye E, Olivia F, Matthew J, Zeke L, Ben N, Thomas P and Robert W shaped five fake

party identities, masking the five main political parties, between which the Prep School were to choose on Polling Day. They

were keen for the children to focus on ideas and policies rather than voting according to preconceived ideas or parental views.

Years 2 and 3 were also given the opportunity to vote following a presentation about the election to Pre-Prep on Wednesday.

On Tuesday these Year 8s took the role of political pundits in our very own Question Time Election Special, in which Mr

Mitchell relished the chance to be David Dimbleby! The Prep School found the performance inspiring and demonstrated this

with a 93% turn out to vote on Thursday 8 June, along with 23 staff.

Year 4 helped to set up the polling station and Year 5s acted as election officials.

BOARDING AT HOLMWOOD.. .

Page 7 Friday 9 June 2017, Summer Term, Week 6

On Wednesday evening the Year 8 Boarders took a well-earned break for exams and went to the beach at Walton on the Naze

for the evening. They had a fantastic time, flying kites, rock pooling and generally spending time together. They enjoyed seeing

who could spot the most and largest crabs and looking for fossils along the beach.

During our Latin lessons this week, Year 6 have been exploring Roman artefacts and archaeology. Each pair was given an

artefact and were asked to investigate it. They had some quite challenging questions and some innovative ideas.
