Rule of the Week Week 10: Be Honest

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE STAFFING As I communicated in a recent newsletter I will be on leave for terms 3 & 4. During that time Miss Deiri will be Relieving Principal. The role of Relieving Deputy Principal will be undertaken by Ms Beresforde (Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday) and Ms Taylor (Thursday& Friday). Mrs Wray will replace Ms Taylor while she is on leave at the beginning of next term. We will welcome a new member of staff next term. Mrs Karen Lam has been appointed to replace Ms Carlson and we look forward to her joining the team, bringing her broad expertise and experience.

REPORTS AND MEETINGS Parent/Carer/Teacher meetings will continue tonight. It was great to see so many parents/carers at school yesterday afternoon/evening and we look forward to a similar attendance tonight. Teachers have reported that almost all parents/carers have made appointments which is tremendous as effective communication between home and school is a most important element of a quality education. I thank all staff for the tremendous efforts and personal time they have devoted to producing the semester reports you received last night and enabling last night and tonight to be so successful. There is no more dedicated staff in any school in NSW.

NAIDOC DAY A reminder that our school will be celebrating NAIDOC Day on Friday. All children are encouraged to wear red, yellow and black. They will participate in activities aimed to develop understanding and appreciation of Indigenous culture. We look forward to a great day.

DRAMA AND DANCE GROUPS It was my great pleasure to watch our Drama Group perform at Primary Play Day at Bankstown Sports Club last Tuesday. Their performance was outstanding and it was very obvious that the children were really enjoying the experience. Indeed, their performance was so good that the group has been selected to perform at the In The Spotlight Drama Festival at NIDA in August. This is a great achievement and it is the third year in a row that our Drama Group has been selected to attend this event. I also had the great pleasure of seeing our Dance Group perform at the In The Spotlight Dance Festival at the Seymour Centre last Friday night. They opened the show and were fabulous. That is not just my opinion as people from other schools I spoke to on the night were also highly complimentary. It was also obvious that the children really enjoyed performing. They should be very proud of their efforts. I’d like to thank very much the teachers who have organised and prepared these groups; Miss Papathanasiou and Mr Burns (drama) and Mrs Atkins and Mrs Lanzafame (dance). They have given many hours of their time and without that dedication our children would not enjoy these wonderful experiences.

ATHLETICS CARNIVALS Our K-2 Athletics Carnivals were held over the last couple of weeks and both were great days of our students. All children participated with great enthusiasm and really enjoyed themselves. It was particularly pleasing to see so many children displaying good sportsmanship such as congratulating each other after a race. Well done to everyone who competed and did their best and congratulations to those athletes who were placed in an event. Special congratulations to those students who will now represent our school at the Liverpool Zone PSSA Carnival to be held in Week 6 next term. Ribbons will be presented at the Athletics Carnival Assembly on 7th August. I’d like to thank everyone who made the carnivals so successful, including staff, parents and students from Holsworthy High. Very special thanks to Miss Mercer and Mrs North who put a great effort into organising the respective carnivals and did a fantastic job.

YEAR 6 CAMP Our year 6 students had a great time at the camp at Bathurst. Congratulations and well done to everyone who attended because your teachers reported that your behaviour and attitude were excellent. You have represented our school with pride. Well Done! Many thanks indeed to all staff who attended. Our great teachers willingly undertake extra duties to provide our students with tremendous experiences and life long memories. Taking students on an overnight camp is a great responsibility and your efforts are very much appreciated. Special thanks to Miss Papathanasiou for doing a great job organising the camp.

BEST WISHES As this is my last newsletter I would like to express my most sincere thanks to our entire school community. To all students, parents/carers, supporters and staff thank you for all that you do to make Holsworthy Public School the fabulous school that it is. As I say often, I am just so proud to be the principal of our school and it is your commitment, dedication and wonderful efforts that make our school what it is today, and for that I say thank you. I thank you also for the tremendous support you have given to me. I appreciate it very much and know you will give the same support to Miss Deiri in her role as Relieving Principal. Please accept my very best wishes for the rest of the year. I look forward to hearing about and seeing the wonderful things our school will achieve. Finally, a reminder to all children to always remember The Golden Rule; “Treat others the way you’d like to be treated”.

INTERRELATE FAMILY EVENING PROGRAM Interrelate school services will present a special evening program about sexuality here at Holsworthy Public School on Tuesday, 4 September 2018. These programs are designed for children and their parent(s)/caregiver(s) to attend together and help answer in clear but simple terms many of those questions that children ask about these topics. There are two programs being run, families can choose to attend one or both programs. “Where Did I Come From?” is aimed at students in Years 3 – 6. In this session children are eager to learn more about how their bodies work and the differences between males and females. This session extends their understanding of conception, fertilisation, foetal development and the birth process. “Preparing for Puberty” is aimed at students in Years 5 & 6. This session helps to prepare children and parents/caregivers for the physical, social and emotional changes associated with puberty. Changing emotions and relationships with families and peers are addressed. Permission notes will be sent home early in Term 3. Mrs North

YEAR 6 CAMP Last week Year 6 braved the cold temperatures and went on an overnight camp to Bathurst. On the way to Bathurst the students did a tour through the Lucas Cave at Jenolan Caves before heading to the Rock and Minerals Museum at Bathurst where they were able to see crystals and fossils found in various locations throughout Australia. After arriving at Bathurst and having dinner, the students enjoyed various night activities including line dancing and cooking marshmallows by the campfire along with some campfire songs. On the second day the students participated in the Bathurst Goldfields activities; learning about how people spent their lives on the goldfields, including playing games, making damper and viewing a mudbrick house from the goldfields. Students also got to see the various methods for finding gold including the mine shafts and horse operated machinery, they then got to experience the work of a blacksmith. Before departing Bathurst, students had a go at panning for gold, where some struck it lucky. The students had a great time and represented our school proudly and are to be commended on their excellent behaviour.

Primary Play Day Drama Ensemble Last Tuesday the Holsworthy Primary Play Day Ensemble group travelled to Bankstown Sports Club to perform their play titled ‘Square Eyes’. This play is about children whose parents have confiscated their children’s phones so that they can use their imagination instead. All of the performances at Bankstown Sports Club were amazing and overall the whole day was an enjoyable experience. Our group was delighted when they discovered that they had progressed to the next level to perform at ‘In the Spotlight Drama Festival’ which will take place at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts on Thursday 16 August 2018. Thank you to our ensemble teachers Miss Papathanasiou and Mr Byrnes for your coaching and organisation.

Surabi Marathe 5/6M The student’s performance received 5 star reviews from the judges and was selected to be showcased at this years “In The Spotlight” talent showcase to be held at NIDA in August. Congratulations to the following HPS students pictured above: Vrinda Dhar, Hazel Williamson, Neel Erande, Tahlia Stonehill, Kevin Francis, Angelina Marius Le Prince, Keira Johnson, Yuvraj Singh, Ayush Bendre, Jasmine Yang, Annissa Tuy, Varsha Ganjigunte, Aleena Tomy, Mark Johnson, Ruponti Das, Aaron Chacko, Abby Kennedy, Sharadhi Rao, Alisha Bonney Joseph, Surabhi Marathe.

Library News

Borrowing Champs

It is exciting to see that 72 of our students have borrowed 20 or more books from the library over the past 10 weeks of this term. That is an average of 2 or more books each week. However our top borrowers have devoured 36 books each.

Our Borrowing Champs for this term are:

Sanjana Iyengar 4J, Krushna Pandalaneni 6T and Steven Xia 5/6A.

The Premier's Reading Challenge

The PRC is in full swing for 2018. All the students in Kinder, Year 1 and Year 2 are participating in class with their teachers. Primary students need to complete the Challenge independently, including entering their books on-line.

Currently we have 129 students in Years 3 to 6 who are working on their challenge. As the challenge does not conclude until the end of August, there is still time for even more students to join in.

Congratulations to the 53 primary students who have already completed their challenge. The grade with the most students included in this number is Grade 3. Well done.

SSW ORIENTEERING CHAMPIONSHIPS On Wednesday 27 June, 14 students represented Holsworthy Public School at the SSW Orienteering Championships at the Bicentennial Equestrian Centre at Camden. The tournament involved students using special maps to navigate their way around a course set through the parkland. Congratulations to Jamila Bui who placed 1st in her age group and Aquila Lei who placed 3rd in his age group. Both these students have been invited to compete at the State Championships in September.
