MIRACLES AND WHISPERS In the First Reading, the Israelites cry out in anguish, “Would that we had died at the LORD’S hand in the land of Egypt.” This is a deep cry from a place of feeling abandoned by God. This is a relatable cry for all of us, and it’s actually important that we bring our feelings of abandonment to prayer in vulnerability and hon-esty. The problem with the Israelites’ approach, however, is that they weren’t talking to God when they were crying out because they had stopped praying. Even when we struggle with despair, we are called to bring it all to God so we can be healed by his divine love. Try this kind of prayer today and journal your ex-perience. Return to the Second Reading, in which St. Paul says to “put away the old self of your former way of life, corrupted through deceitful desires, and be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new self.” Jesus is calling the disciples to this process in the Gospel—do not pursue miracles and signs like the pagans, but rather, seek a new self that lives in friendship with Jesus. Reflect on this call, asking the Holy Spirit to renew your mind. When Jesus says, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger,” he is using a physical need to demonstrate a corresponding spiritual need. We have an infinite hunger and thirst for God and to be loved by him. Nothing but God will ever be able to fill the emptiness we experience within us. It would be terrifying if God were evil or indifferent to us, but he loves us with an infinite love, while we were yet sin-ners (Romans 5:8). Consider those things that are preventing you from experiencing this deep love of God, and ask him to fill the emptiness you feel when you are separated from him by sin. While we are called to cultivate silent prayer, when we can hear the whisper of God in our hearts, the cele-bration of the Eucharist is the public worship of the Church, which is the miracle that is the source and sum-mit of our Catholic life (Lumen Gentium, 11). The sacraments, particularly the Eucharist, are the places where whisper and miracle meet. If we are unable to hear God’s gentle whisper, the miracle of the Eucharist will remain hidden from us. Cultivating this kind of deep prayer life, in which we come to true communion with God, prepares us for the gift of ultimate communion in the Eucharist. Put yourself in the place of the crowds and the disciples. Imagine that you had come to Jesus to satisfy only your earthly needs. What is your reaction to this man who instead reminds you of your deeper hunger for divine love, and promises to fi ll it? What word comes to mind? Take that word and reflect on what it means to you personally. For exam-ple, the phrase, “do not work for food that perishes,” might have stuck out to you. Ask yourself what this means in your own life. Is Jesus inviting you to put aside the material things that are preventing you from attaining deeper friendship with him? Is he mercifully calling you into deeper intimacy with him, for which you are truly longing?

As we strive to pray more, how can we also be making our life more Eucharistic?

“God has created me to do some definite service. He has committed some work to me which he has not committed to another. I have my mission. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection be-tween persons. I shall do good; I shall do his work.” —Blessed John Henry Newman
