May 24, 2020 The Ascension of The Lord

The Ascension of Jesus means a New Life for Us It’s not really proper to say that Jesus came back to life on Easter, in a way similar to Lazarus, when Jesus raised him. Jesus didn’t just come back to life; He began a new way of life as the Firstborn from the dead. Nor did Jesus abandon His followers when He ascended into heaven as He tells us in today’s Gospel: “I am with you always, to the end of the age.” He also men!ons in Saint John’s Gospel that, “where I am you also may be.” We can see that there’s something different about Jesus from the accounts we’ve heard in the last few weeks of the appearances of the risen Christ to His disciples. There one minute, gone the next. Unrecognizable and then recognizable. ‘None of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they knew it was the Lord’, and so on. You might point out that He s!ll had the marks of the passion on His body. The Apostles saw and touched the holes in His hands, feet, and side. This is true because the resurrec!on of Jesus doesn’t undo His crucifixion, it completes it. Likewise, we too will bring with us into eternity all of the various sacrifices and sufferings we have accepted in this life for love of God and neighbor. These, like the wounds of Jesus will bring us greater glory. Yet, there is also something mysterious about the risen body of Jesus as it seems to be eminently touchable, and yet can pass through locked doors. What will we be able to do one day with our glorified bodies? Will we be like the Angels able to swim through the depths of the oceans to see and play with all the amazing creatures there? Will we be able to soar throughout the cosmos discovering the beauty of new worlds and witness the birth of stars? Will we be able to experience the winds of a tornado or hurricane without the fear of harm or death? Although exactly what a risen and glorified body will be able to do is not clear, Saint Paul says, “What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him.” Let’s see what Jesus did with His glorified Body. Jesus tells us that He is present where two or three gather in His name. As Saint Paul explains, “Christ is the Head of the Body of the Church.” If the Church is a body, it must be an unbroken body, according to the words of Paul: “though many we are one body in Christ.” So, with the help of Saint Paul we can understand that the risen and glorified Jesus can be touched and known in this world through His Church. Jesus also stated quite categorically before His death that He is the Living Bread come down from heaven and that He must be eaten. He didn’t mean cannibalism, but the recep!on of His Sacred Body in Holy Communion; bread and wine transformed into His Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity. So we know that the risen and glorified Jesus is truly, bodily, present in the Holy Eucharist. The Feast of the Ascension should remind us that by remaining a faithful member of His Church, which is the Mys!cal Body of Jesus, and by receiving Him worthily in the Holy Eucharist, we too can look forward to a new type of life beyond what our human minds could ever imagine! Spiritual Communion What happens when we cannot receive Jesus sacramentally? The tradi!on tells us to make a “spiritual communion,” joining our whole selves—prayers, works, joys, and sufferings—to his sacrificial presence in the Eucharist—even when that sacrament is not before us to receive.

Sacramental Information

St. John’s Church is open daily from 7:00 am-7:00 pm. You may come in and spend !me with our Lord. Beginning Sunday, May 31 Bishop Callahan has permi'ed public Masses, Sundays only.

There will be a 7:00 am and 9:00 am Mass at St. John’s. One of the guidelines is that church can be at 25% of occupancy standards. At each Mass there can be 90 people. Call the parish office @ 715-352-3011 to sign up for one of the Masses.

Annual Appeal Reminder: Thank you to all who have given to the Annual Appeal! We are s!ll in need of $10,000.00 to meet our Parish goal. I realize many have been hit hard by the recent disrup!on caused by the Coronavirus and may not be able to contribute at this !me. However, any contribu!on at this !me would be greatly appreciated. IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT TO RESUME MASSES: Dear Parishioners of Saint Johns and Holy Family Parishes, It seems possible that public Masses will be permi'ed on Sundays only, beginning with Pentecost Sunday (May31st). Priests are normally limited to offer three Masses on Sundays. At this !me I plan on offering the Holy Mass at 7am and 9 am at Saint Johns and 10:30 at Holy Family. Direc!ves have been sent out from The Diocese to all the parishes requiring certain safety measures including: A'endance at each individual Mass is limited to 25% percentage of occupancy with proper social distancing; use of only every other pew; intervening pews must be cordoned off for the sake of social distancing; all Missals, hymnals, prayer cards or other paper resources must be removed from the pews; masks and hand sani!zer will be available at church entrances and exits; there is no presenta!on of gi<s and the Sign of Peace is omi'ed en!rely; Communion is to be distributed only by the priest and only a single-file line is permi'ed when people come forward to receive Communion; people si%ng the right side of the church first and then people on the le< side. We are asking people not to be gathering before or a<er Mass on church property. The Masses, at this !me will be celebrated as “low Masses” without singing to reduce the spread of germs. As the Diocese has also limited church a'endance to 25% occupancy only 90 persons will be able to a'end the 7am Mass and 90 persons a'end the 9am Mass at Saint Johns and 70 persons at Holy Family at the 10:30 Mass. To a'end Mass at one of the Masses at Saint Johns You will have to call the Parish Office Monday thru Friday “to make a reserva!on”. Once 90 persons have “made reserva!ons” the Mass is considered “full” and only those persons may a'end that Mass. I feel awful about this, but this has been required if we wish to have a public Mass at Saint Johns. To a'end Mass at Holy Family, you will need to call Michelle Socha at her number in the bulle!n. Once 70 persons have “made reserva!ons” the Mass is considered “full” and only those persons may a'end that Mass. Again, I feel awful about this, but this has been required if we wish to have a public Mass at Holy Family. Bishop Callahan has stated in his le'er to all of us: As we roll back into these public celebra"ons, I must highlight that the obliga"on to a#end Mass on Sundays remains dispensed. No one is required, under the pain of mortal sin, to a#end Mass un"l further no"ce. In fact, at this "me I encourage those over 65 and par"cularly those with underlying health condi"ons to stay home. Sunday Mass will con"nue to be televised for the sick and homebound. Please be assured of our con"nued prayer for you. Let us all pray that our Masses will get back to a more normal situa!on soon, Fr. Tom
