ADORATION on Thursday will return this September.

  • DEAR HOLY FAMILY PARISHIONERS: Are we ready to celebrate our freedom this Saturday, July 4th? This day is one of our most treasured days as a nation. This is the annual day to cele-brate the fact that we can freely celebrate! Do we ever take time to stop & think about the many freedoms we have in America? Do we often take them for granted? Do we forget about those countless men & women who gave their lives or fought in battles so that we could be free & can continue to be free? This Saturday will find many of us getting together at parties, enjoying the company of family & friends. We will visit parks, enjoy family. We may take a dip in a pool. Some relaxation & fun will be on the agenda. That is what people look forward to on July 4th. But, July 4th is also about FREEDOM. We are FREE to assemble & worship, at least to some extent right now. We are FREE from foreign domination. We are FREE to express ourselves in speech. We are FREE to think what we want. We are FREE to vote & elect our leaders. And we have many more FREEDOMS that many other peoples do not have. And we as Catholics have reasons to celebrate FREEDOM when it comes to our faith. We are FREE from the power of sin & death thanks to Jesus & His Passion & Death. We are FREE from despair, thanks to the Resurrection of Jesus & the promise of eternal life. Let us find ourselves giving thanks this July 4th through communal worship & private prayer. Let us continue to find ourselves at the Lord’s Table by coming to Mass, receiving the best food possible—-the Lord’s Body. May we pause & give thanks for our country. May we defend & be proud of America. May we strive to make our country a more peaceful, just, tolerant & faith-filled nation. At this time in our nation’s history, we are called as Americans to rid our land of injustice, racism, intolerance, violence, murder, disrespect, & anarchy. Our country was founded on freedom, especially as to worship. May America rely on the faith God has given us. YOUR PASTOR, FATHER JOE PLEASE NOTE: Daily Mass has returned to 7:30 a.m., Monday through Friday. Each daily Mass will be preceded by a 7:10 a.m. Rosary. NOTE: For the next several weeks BOTH the Daily Masses & the Rosaries preceding the Masses will be live-streamed. Also, when coming to Daily Mass, safe distancing will need to be practiced, the same as the 3 weekend Masses. For the weekend Masses, you are to sign up on SignUpGenius, either on Facebook or the parish website (decaturholyfamily.com). THANKS for being understanding. Mass will not look the same yet, but progress is being made. CONGRATULATIONS to our Bishop, Thomas John Paprocki, who celebrated his 10th Anniversary as our Diocesan Bishop last Monday, June 22nd, the Feast of St. Tbomas More & St. John Fisher. Bishop Paprocki has both names of these two Saints—-Thomas John. We thank Bishop Paprocki for all he has done in his 10 years as our Chief Shepherd. We pray that our Blessed Mother, Mother of all priests, will guide our Bishop now & into the future. AD MULTOS ANNOS, Bishop—-many more years of being the Bishop of Springfield in Illinois!

  • BIGGEST CLASS SINCE 1964!!!!

So many times in the bulletin is an article about Vocations to the Priesthood. Fr. Joe tries to encourage young men to think about whether they are being called to be a priest for Almighty God. Our diocese & our Universal Church need more priests to carry out the mission of Jesus Christ. This year the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois is graced with the most priestly voca-tions in 56 years——8!!!!! How blessed we are by God to have these men ready & able to minister to the people of God in our diocese. Please pray for them as they begin their assignments this Wednesday, July 1st. Two of the 8 men were ordained last month due to immigration status, as both of them are from Poland. The other 6 were ordained on June 19th. Also, on the 19th, there was an ordination of a transitional deacon who will ordained a priest next May. The 8 men ordained to the priesthood are: FR. DAVID BEAGLES—Home parish is the Cathedral in Springfield, & his new assignment is parochial vicar (assistant pastor) at St. Francis parish in Quincy. FR. MICHAEL BERNDT—Home parish is St. Francis in Quincy, & his new assignment is parochial vicar at Christ the King parish in Springfield. FR. Thank you for healing our land and protecting those who are most vulnerable. Give peace to those who struggle with loneliness and isolation, and endurance to the many busi-nesses that are affected by our feeble attempts to control Corona. Come to the bedside of those who are struggling with the effects of contracting the virus. • WELCOME & GOOD-BYE

Last year our Decatur area had no changes in priest personnel. However, this year is a different story. I am the only priest still pastor in our area, as the others have either been reassigned or are retiring. The changes begin on July 1st. As the Dean of the Decatur Deanery, I want to welcome the “new kids” to our local parishes. We are blessed to have some very good priests assigned to our parishes. They replace very good pastors who will be retiring, to whom we say good-bye & thanks. WELCOME to Fr. Michael Friedel, new pastor of Our Lady of Lourdes & St. Thomas. He is also the new chaplain at Millikin University. Fr. Michael was a deacon here several years ago during the summer. It’ll be great to have him around once again. WELCOME to Fr. Michael Trummer, new parochial vicar at OLOL. He was just ordained to the priesthood on June 19th. He will also be the new chaplain at St. Teresa HS. WELCOME to Fr. Chris Comerford, new pastor of SS. James & Patrick & chaplain at the Decatur Correctional Center. He is the nephew of Mary Jo Noonan. He is an AVID St. Louis Cardinal fan—-way to go, Fr. Chris!!! WELCOME to Fr. Jason Stone, new pastor of Our Lady of the Holy Spirit in Mt. Zion & St. Isidore in Bethany. He is a classmate of Fr. Marty Smith. GOOD-BYE to Fr. Rick Weltin, pastor emeritus of OLOL & St. Thomas. He is retiring & will reside in the South Shores area. I thank him for his 19 years of dedicated service to the Decatur area. He deserves to have time to himself these days. GOOD-BYE to Fr. John Burnette, pastor emeritus of SS. James & Patrick. He is retiring to his home in Springfield. I thank him for his years of service to our area. He also deserves to have some restful days. GOOD-BYE to Fr. Steve Arisman, former pastor of OLHS & St. Isidore, & now the new pastor of St. Francis in Quincy. I thank him for his service to those two parishes & all he did at St. Teresa. He will be in the same city as his uncle, Fr. Leo Enlow. How fortunate we are in the Decatur area to have priests to minister to God’s People. Please pray for the newly assigned priests & the two retiring. May Jesus Christ, the High Priest, bless these men abundantly! ——FATHER JOE
