oly host reparatory Schoolwas founded in 1897 as apreparatory and junior collegiateseminary for young men who werestudying to become members ofthe Congregation of the HolySpirit. At that time, the school wascalled Holy Ghost Apostolic Collegeand educated seminarians fromfirst-year high school throughsecond-year college. Each studentlived at the seminary in areas thattoday have been made intoclassrooms.

In the late 1950's, the Holy GhostFathers undertook a majorrevamping of their educationalprogram. At this time, all first andsecond-year college seminarianswere moved from Holy Ghost andsent to Duquesne University inPittsburgh, Pennsylvania. For thefirst time in its history, the schoolwould open its doors to a highschool student who was interestedin preparing himself for collegewithout entering the seminaryprogram. It was at this time thatthe name became Holy GhostPreparatory School.

The first group of day studentsentered in 1959 and attended classside by side with the high schoolseminarians. During the followingyears and as the school'spopulation grew, its reputation forexcellence became synonymouswith its name. Improvements weremade in both the physical plantand the educational andextracurricular programs. Theconstruction of the gym (1962), the

addition of new math, science and language programs, the expansion ofthe interscholastic sports programand non-athletic activities such asdramatics, newspaper, yearbook, andforensics have all served to furtherthe school's aim of providing a well-rounded educational experience foreach student. In 1968, the Spiritansdiscontinued the seminary programso that, at present, the entireenrollment of Holy Ghost Prepconsists of nonresident, college-bound students.

In the 1990’s, the school madesignificant structural enhancementsto the campus, including newscience and computer labs.Subsequently, major additions andrenovations to the athletic facilitieswere accomplished. Founders’ Hall, containing a new library, classrooms, and computer labs, was built in 1999to enhance the educationalopportunities for all students. Theentire Firebird Fieldhouse wasrenovated in 2003.

Holy Ghost Prep commenced a newStrategic Planning Process in the fallof 2010, including reviews andrecommendations for all phases ofschool life. The planning processcoincided with repair and renovationof the historic Chapel of the SevenGifts of the Holy Spirit after a near-disastrous fire in 2009; and withrenovation of the centraladministrative and student life areasof Cornwells Hall, including theDining Hall (2010) and lockerfacilities (2011).

HGP’s Bring Your Own Device(BYOD) ProgramTechnology in the ClassroomBYOD is the preferred policy for Colleges and Universities. HGP is atraditional preparatory school that strives to prepare students for college.Books and technology can be used together in a multimodal environment toenrich the learning process. BYOD allows students to learn responsibilityand decide which device is most comfortable to use. Technology is a meansto an end, not the end itself. We don't want to waste classroom time onhow to use a device. Time is better spent on how to “read” information, rather than how to use a device. HGP does not want to get locked into along term contract that doesn’t meet the students’ needs and requiresparents to pay for it. One size does not fit all. Students interested in Mathand Science may choose a different device than students interested in Musicand Art. Students can spend what they feel comfortable spending on adevice. Rather than building money into the tuition, HGP grants the familiesthe option to choose what works best for them.

Professional DevelopmentHGP faculty will be required to complete 40 hours per year of professionaldevelopment related to technology. Levels of proficiency in topics such asGoogle Apps, Schoology, ExamView, TurnItIn, and website development willbe established. Faculty can also create their own individualized tech plan toincrease efficiency and take learning further.

ClassroomsHGP uses flipped classrooms. As the students and faculty spend more timeon devices in the classroom, HGP will work to reconfigure the classrooms,to establish a more conducive learning environment. This will allow facultyto make sure that the students are on task with their devices and students tobe able to focus on the lesson.

School supplied functionality and security policyHGP supplies high speed wireless internet throughout the campus sostudents and faculty can access all available resources. HGP also providesareas throughout the campus where students can charge their device safelyand securely. HGP has enough wireless access points throughout campus toaccommodate every student using 2 devices (a phone and a device).

As each course in our curriculum

would be considered an honors

course at many other schools and as

many academically talented students

attend Holy Ghost Prep, honors and

advanced placement classes are for

those students who are exceptionally

talented. For incoming students,

enrollment in honors classes is

limited to those who have performed

well on our placement test, our

entrance examination, on other

standardized tests, and in grade

school. Incoming freshman may not

take AP classes. All decisions about

placement are made by the Advanced

Placement Committee and the

Principal in consultation with

teachers, counselors and parents.
