PASTOR’S NOTE

Today we begin the pageant of Holy Week—the most intensely spiritual week of the year. Liturgically we follow the Lord Jesus in His last earthly days right up to the death defying, spectacle of His Resurrection. Make your way through this week as if part of the grand procession snaking through the streets of Seville, Spain each year. As Jesus begged his disciples in the Garden: “Just be with me.” Just follow along with the liturgy of Holy Week and symbolically enter into those events as if you were there on the streets of Jerusalem itself. The Sacred Triduum is a measured march along the Way of the Cross beginning with Jesus’ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem and ending with the magnificent triumph of His Resurrection. Do yourself and your family a blessed favor and make time this week to follow the Lord on His way to Calvary and the bright light of the empty tomb. The poem for this week is one that drifted out of my breviary the other day, printed on a holy card my father gave me more than 50 years ago. It is by Joseph Mary Plunkett, the Irish poet and patriot. It was one of my dad’s favorites and he reminded me that the poet was executed in the Easter Rising of 1916. Those of us who are Irish are inspired in this centenary year of that event. No doubt the faith in the Risen Christ which gave Plunkett his keen awareness of God’s presence in the natural world, also supplied him the strength and hope to face the firing squad on an Easter 100 years ago. Let the light of Jesus’ Resurrection illuminate the divine handiwork in the beauty of this springtime and in all we meet along the way, especially the poor and distressed.

In the Lord,

Fr. Hugh, OP

Pastor’s Poetry Post-It

I See His Blood Upon the Rose

I see His blood upon the rose And in the stars the glory of His eyes, His body gleams amid eternal snows, His tears fall from the skies. I see His face in every flower; The thunder and the singing of the birds Are but His voice—and carven by His power Rocks are His written words. All pathways by His feet are trod His strong heart stirs the ever-beating sea, His crown of thorns is twined with every thorn, His cross is every tree.

Joseph Mary Plunkett (1887-1916; executed in the Easter Rising)

PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD

First Reading: Isaiah 50:4-7

Isaiah describes an individual who had been taught by God to reach out to others. He also describes this individual's willingness to be beaten and spit upon, secure that with God's help, he will not be disgraced. Second Reading: Philippians 2:6-11

Paul discusses how Jesus did not declare equality with God, but took on human form. He humbled himself enough to accept dying on the cross. God in turn exalted him and wants us to respect Jesus' name and worship him. Gospel: Luke 22:14—23:56

Luke gives a detailed account of Jesus' last supper with the apostles, where Jesus tells them he will soon suffer in fulfillment of God's will. Then Jesus prayed that he might be spared if it suited God's will. After Judas betrayed Jesus, he was arrested. Although Pilate did not think Jesus was guilty of a crime, he gave in to the will of the people, and sentenced Jesus to death on a cross. Then Jesus was crucified and his body laid in a new tomb.

In planning the music for Holy Week 2016, the Music Ministry of Holy Innocents searched for fitting selections for the themes and moods of each of the holy days. It is our intention that the music accompany and enhance the messages of each liturgy of the Triduum. We always utilize the Breaking Bread hymnal first, but there exists beautiful music by a variety of composers in other resources that we think provides an interesting reflection on the celebration of each day’s service for our parish. When a selection is not in the hymnal, we review before Mass, and our cantors recite the refrains first, so you can fully join in the singing.

We invite and encourage you to attend each of these beautiful and moving services and want you to know that your participation in the music of each liturgy is important to us.

It is our sincere hope that all who gather with us over these special days find the music we have chosen and prepared prayerful, and an integral part of the celebrations of Triduum. As always, we encourage and welcome your participation!

May you all have a Blessed Easter!
