First Sunday in Advent

(Year B) November 29, 2020

Reading I: Isaiah 63:16b-17; 64:1, 3b-8 Responsorial Psalm 80: 1ac, 2b, 14-15,17-18 Reading II: 1 Corinthians 1:3-9 Gospel: Mark 13:33-37

Theme: “Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when

the time will come” (Gospel).

It was a different thanksgiving this time. After the mass, I missed the gathering of friends and parishioners who are usually “alone and lonely” during holidays. We are advised to still refrain from any unnecessary gathering as the rate of virus spread continues to rise. Let us protect each other and stay patient. We have good news on the progress of vaccine availability soon. Let us stay close in prayer even as we pray for the whole world.

Blessed Charles de Foucauld says that “the best used hour in our lives is that in which we love Jesus the most.” Love as a basic human need is the most pleasant experience and when it is spent with God himself it is incomparable. In reality, the Lord who is love being eternal is most present to anyone who turns his or her attention to him. Being alert and awake is a state of being that is constantly attuned to the wonders of God.

Adventus is a Latin word which means “coming.” While we know it as a liturgical season before Christmas or as we wait for the coming of the Lord, it is more a spiritual awaking for all who need the presence of God. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer suggests, “The celebration of Advent is possible only to those who are troubled in soul, who know themselves to be poor and imperfect, and who look forward to something greater to come.”

“Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come,” the gospel instructs us. It is good to know we are advised to be on a look out and there is something we actually cannot predict and know. It makes us humble and it creates a space for God who fills us with love. The birth of God in our hearts happens in a lifetime. With God, there is always something to receive. On our part, we remain grateful, patient and even penitent. “The best penance is to have patience with the sorrows God permits. A very good penance is to dedicate oneself to fulfill the duties of everyday with exactitude and to study and work with all our strength” (St. Peter Damian).

Let us pray: God our Father, grant us your love as we await the coming of your Son Jesus Christ and strengthen us in the Holy Spirit so we remain faithful, tranquil, and calm, Amen.

Primer domingo de Adviento (año B) 29 de noviembre de 2020

Lectura I: Isaías 63: 16b-17; 64: 1, 3b-8 Salmo responsorial 80: 1ac, 2b, 14-15,17-18 Lectura II: 1 Corintios 1: 3-9 Evangelio: Marcos 13: 33-37

Tema: “¡Estén atentos! ¡Estar alerta!

Pastoral Reflection By Mary Jane Martinez, Pastoral Council Member

In the First Reading of the Prophet Isaiah, he is reminding us that the Lord is our Father and our Redeemer. Yet we wander from His ways and harden our hearts so that we fear Him. No ear has ever heard, no eye has ever seen, any God but Him, who continues to do good deeds for those who wait on Him. He lets us know that even though we turn away from His ways, we are sinful and have become like unclean people, He waits on us to turn back to Him and do right. He is our Lord, our Father. We are the clay and He is the potter; we are all the work of His hands. In the Second Reading, Saint Paul is helping the Corinthians and all who read this letter, to understand more clearly what is true about our relationship with God. He alone is our source of grace and peace. God is one and consists of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and He intends for us to be in a relationship with Him. In the Gospel of Mark 13:33-37, Jesus is warning us that there is no time for a leisurely faith. He tells us to pay attention to the signs that the end times are coming. He isn't saying that we should spend all our time and effort in determining when that will be because we can't know when He will return.

Outdoor Weekend Mass Schedule Saturday: 5:00 pm English Sunday: 7:00 am English Sunday: 5:00 pm Spanish

Please Bring Your Lawn Chairs & Face Masks Holy Name Church Attendance Procedures

We ask for Christian patience and understanding during these difficult and challenging times. It is imperative that each of us strictly abide by these procedures to prevent contamination and/or spread of the Covid-19 to one another.

For the safety of all, these procedures are mandatory and must be adhered to for Mass attendance. Anyone who cannot comply are asked to leave. Holy Name Catholic Church Procedures will follow the Archdiocese of San Antonio Guidelines for Mass Attendees and are as follows:

1. If you are feeling sick, we ask that you stay safe at home. We highly encourage those who are most vulnerable to continue to participate in mass via live stream or website (holynameusa.org).

2. Wash hands thoroughly before coming to the church.

3. Everyone must have their temperature taken before entering the church when applicable. Anyone with a fever will not be allowed entry. Anyone coughing or sneezing may not be allowed entry.

4. All must wear a face mask that covers both nose and mouth before entering the church and throughout the Mass. No exceptions except for infant children.

5. Bring hand sanitizer, your own missal or other mass aids to church.

6. Always maintain 6 feet between you and others not in your cohabitating family.

7. Follow the instructions of the ushers as you enter and leave the Church.

8. When guided by the ushers to receive communion, wear your mask receiving Communion, only removing it or lifting the mask up to consume Jesus away from the Priest or Deacon.

9. Seating will be on a first come first served basis for now, Mass capacity will be dependent on the number of attendees in each group, we can Safely seat. 10. Unfortunately, there will be no saving of seats. We ask that you ensure you enter with whomever you want to sit with. Once seated we cannot allow anyone to reposition because it will compromise the 6-foot separation distance.

11. After receiving Communion, we need everyone to maintain in their seats until the ushers direct your row towards the exits. We ask that you please be patient, as we are doing our best to maintain exiting in an orderly manner.

12. Finally, we ask that you be very patient with us, especially our volunteers who did not establish these procedures, but are only following them. They are giving of their time to help us conduct Mass, without volunteers this Mass would not happen. Thank you.

During Advent, we not only prepare ourselves to celebrate the birth of Jesus, but we also check in to see if we are doing all the things that will keep us ready to receive Jesus when he comes again.

Talk to your family about how you are doing in attending to your spiritual life as a family.

Recommit yourselves to praying daily, reading Scripture, and staying faithful to God’s commandments.

Pray together that through this Advent season your family will be more prepared to receive Jesus when he comes again.

God of Love, Your son, Jesus, is your greatest gift to us.

He is a sign of your love. Help us walk in that love during the weeks of Advent,

As we wait and prepare for his coming. We pray in the name of Jesus, our Savior.

Amen.
