Holy Spirit – Living Grounded Book 2 – Chapter 5

Share our faith and Disciple another – no greater call

Chapters 1-4 in book 2 – HS is intimately involved in each of these topics

New Life in Christ – Spiritual rebirth – Jn 3:5

Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God

Our new identity

2 Cor 5:17 - Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

Battling the world, the flesh and the devil

John 14:17 Spirit of Truth

Gal 5:17 Wages war against my flesh

Dealing with temptation

Rom 1:4 Spirit of Holiness

Who is the HS? (Attributes)

HS is NOT:

An “it”, an influence, energy source, impersonal, a ghost,

HS is fully God

We teach that the Holy Spirit is a divine Person, eternal, underived, possessing all the divine attributes, and that in these He is coequal and consubstantial with the Father and the Son

Holy Spirit

SPIRIT = Pneuma - spirit, Spirit, wind or breath

Divine attributes

Eternal

Hebrews 9:14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal

Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead

works to serve the living God?

Omnipresent

Psalm 139:7-8 Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your

presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, behold,

You are there.

All truth – Spirit of Truth Jn 14-16

1 Cor 2:11 “the thoughts of God”

Isaiah 40:13-14 Who has directed the Spirit of the Lord, Or as His counselor has

informed Him? With whom did He consult and who gave Him understanding? And

who taught Him in the path of justice and taught Him knowledge And informed Him

of the way of understanding?

Omnipotent

Creation Gen 1:2 – Spirit of God JC Col 1:16 “by Him all things were

created”

In the Believer Romans 15:13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and

peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Spirit of Holiness Rom 1:4

Spirit of Glory 1 Pet 4:4

Life giving 2 Cor 3:6

Person –

Mind

Rom 8:27 and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Will

1 Cor 12:11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

Emotions

Eph 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

Underived – not a created being – He is eternal

Coequal and consubstantial with the Father and the Son >>> Trinity

Not found in the Bible – Theological term = TRI UNITY

Father Son HS

One God in 3 distinct persons – each fully God

There is ONE God

Deut 6:4 (the Shema = “HEAR” Mot important prayer in Judaism) “Hear, O Israel!

The Lord is our God, the Lord is one! "LORD" = in Hebrew = Yahweh Jehovah

(The existing One)

Ex 20:2 I am the Lord your God

I = singular

Lord = Jehovah (The existing One)

God (Elohim) – plural

God = plural (3 persons of the Trinity represented)

Gen 1:1 “Elohim” = plural

Gen 1:26 Let US make man in Our image according to Our likeness – Godhead

working in unison

Gen 3:22 “… Behold, the man has become like one of US, ….

Equal to God (one verse)

Mat 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the

name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit

2 Cor 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the

fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

Extinguish, suppress, stifle

The fire of God’s Spirit is not to be doused with sin

Ex Pour a bucket of water on a fire

River of Living water

7 days feasts of booths / tabernacles – invitation on 7th day

Water represented the blessing of adequate water for their crops

John 7:38-39 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost

being will flow rivers of living water.’” But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those

who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus

was not yet glorified.

Continuous river, teaming with life

Who has the HS?

V38 – He who believes in me = each born again believer

God is not impartial >>>

BUT there is a condition = faith

Rom 8:9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of

God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not

belong to Him

When

After Jesus is glorified = resurrected with a glorified body

Eph 1:13 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your

salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of

promise,

What does the Holy Spirit do?

3 Primary ministries

Glorify Jesus Christ

Jn 16:13 But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth;

for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak;

and He will disclose to you what is to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of

Mine and will disclose it to you.

Spiritual Rebirth / Regeneration

Spirit of God places the believer into union with Christ and into union with other

believers in the body of Christ at the moment of salvation.

1 Cor 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or

Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

Transformation / Sanctification (generate Christ-likeness)

1 Cor 2:10-13 but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all

things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a

man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts

of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the

Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. This

is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by

the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.

10-16 Searches all things (takes what is Christ’s and discloses it)

All that the Father has is Christ’s – All that is Christ’s is the HS

He takes of Christ

V13 God’s wisdom taught by the HS

Superintended the writing of Scripture (OT and NT)

2 Pet 1:20-21 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of

one’s own interpretation, 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human

will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.

Moved along – Wind in the sail of a ship (power)

Illuminates – as I read the Bible

Indwelling –

1 Cor 3:16 Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

Permanent

2 Cor 1:22 who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge.

Eph 4:30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

BAPTISM of the HS –that work whereby the Spirit of God places the believer into union with Christ and into union with other believers in the Body of Christ at the moment of salvation

Rom 6:3 Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?

1 Cor 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

In the Book of Acts 2 Both Baptism of the Holy Spirit and Filling of the Holy Spirit occur at the same time. Nowhere else is it seen.

Filling of the HS

Commanded

Eph 5:18 And do not get drunk with wine, for this is dissipation, but be filled with the Holy Spirit

Q > How would one know if the Holy Spirit was working in someone’s life?

Spiritual hunger, spiritual questions, discernment

Rom 6:11-14 Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, 13 and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. 14 For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

This is about a daily / moment-by-moment choice

Proof

Fruit of the Spirit

To be filled with the Holy Spirit means that we allow him to occupy and control every area of our lives. How much of you does the Holy Spirit have?

Eph 5:18-21

And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord; always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father; and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.

Col 3:15-17 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father

Where the Holy Spirit is

Christ will be exalted

Man & woman will be humbled

Getting your house in order

Fruit is produced by the Spirit
