Projects include floating shelf, fireplacesurround, antique bedside table, TV stand, coffee table and much, much more.

More news.... You can listen to the DIY Diva every Thursday morning from 09:30 to 10:00 am on 101.9 ChaiFM.

Switch up your beddingAfter a long day at the office or night

on the town, your bed can be the most welcoming sight in the world. Transform your sanctuary with something as simple as new bedding. Choose colours and fabrics that conjure the best parts of the season - soft fleeces in lavender or mossy greens arewonderful in winter.

A bright ideaWhile you’re still in the bedroom,

pick up some new lampshades in a cool texture or colour. If your lamps are beyond saving, search out a mismatched pair from a second-hand shop instead of splurging on brand new ones, then paint them a new colour. Remember: Plug in and test any pre-used electronics before you leave the store.

Jazz up windows with

valancesEven the most

insignificant of windows will look gorgeouswith the addition of a valance. You can match the fabric to your drapes, or mix it up with a solid. This is a project that will take a little longer than the others, so make sure you tackle it on the weekend.

Introduce colour with new cushions Colourful pillows or new cushion covers can update the look of your

living room in an instant.

As summer starts to wane and we start heading for autumn, what better time to give your home a facelift before hibernating for winter.

Update dining chairsTurn the chair upside

down and undo the screws to remove the seat.

You’ll need material the size of the old seat pad, plus an extra 10 cm on all sides. Place the fabric pretty side facing down and put the old seat on top with the bottom face up. Pull the fabric over the edge and staple several times - first on the rightside, then left, top then bottom, pulling as taut as possible. Fold the corners into clean simple creases and staple underneath using diagonal corners.

Wallpaper a feature wall

The key to wall-papering is to measure twice, cut once, and exercise a few simple tips.

Cut two lengths the first time, making sureto match the pattern, then put up the firstpiece. Cut the third to match the second before you put up the next one - and so on.

Tip: Add 10cm to the length (5 top and 5 bottom) for easy handling and cut the excess with a craft knife when the whole job is done.

Create a spaceA room of one’s own is a

must-have, but sometimes even a corner will do. When re-organizing your space or rearranging your furniture, remember to leave room for that cosy reading corner in the office or spa-worthy shrine in themaster bathroom.

Hang new artworkWhether you’re at the poster, print, or original artwork stage of

your life, what’s on the walls gives your home its real personality.

Blow up your favourite photographs of family or travel for an instant original piece, or pick up beautiful old paintings at an antique fair and get them reframed.

Or create your own artworkShow your creative side with a simple art project. Pick up a

mounted canvas at your local art supply store. Following the same staple gun method as the upholstered dining chair, cover a patterned fabric that complements your current decor.

7

Rearrange your furnitureMove around smaller accent pieces to liven up

an old composition or dream up a completely new vision using your current pieces in a brand new layout.

Be creative and flexible. Live withthe new layout for a few days to get used to the change before making your final decision.

Open shelving filled with a wealth oflovingly collected books and collectables is a classic feature. Pull your look together with these top five styling tips.

1. Mix books of varying sizes with artwork and decorative objects to create vignettes with personality.

2. Too many small items look bitsy and add clutter. Use objects with substance to fillnegative space and ensure they relate to each other in terms of balance and scale. Typically, when it comes to styling shelves, more is more and bigger is better.

3. Symmetry is important, so repeat similar items a few times. If you’ve got a stack of books in one area, try to include one or two more throughout your display.

4. Shelf arrangements are at their best when grounded in neutrals. If possible, use warm whites and ivories, worn woods and metals, then, if desired, scatter an accent colour throughout.

5. We rarely get it right the first time. Keepplaying with the composition, shifting things around until you’re satisfied.Practice will eventually make perfect.

A Dremel glue gun is perfect for this project, as it has a temperature control that

allows you to cool down the glue and not worry about melting the plastic.

Sausha at Show & Tell shows us how you can transform a junk shop findinto a treasured piece for your home, using a few fabric scraps and a glue gun.

You will need:Dremel glue gunCotton scraps and offcutsSharp scissors

Here’s how:1. Remove the old fabric from the

shade by cutting away a small section until you can get inside to cut off the remaining. Be gentle - you don’t want to damage the plastic drum as you will need this for your new shade.

2. Measure the diameter of the drum, allowing 2cm extra length for closing.

3. Position one end of the fabric against the plastic drum and apply a small bead of glue from top to bottom to fasten the fabric to the drum.

4. Wrap the fabric carefully around the drum and apply another bead of glue at the starting point to glue down the end.

RECYCLEDimagination

I have come to the conclusion that recycling is addictive and fun!

Before tossing anything into the dustbin I always look for ways to re-use and re-purpose items. Here are some great ways to re-use and upcycle common light bulbs.

Here’s how:1. Mark centre points for 20mm dowel holes

- spaced 10cm apart and centred along the length of one of the sides (A).

2. Align and clamp two sides together face to face so you can bore holes through them simultaneously. Bore holes using a 20mm spade bit. Place a backer board under the sides to prevent splintering when the bit exits.

3. For easy alignment of dowel ends (C) during glue-up in the sides (A), cut two boards from 20mm scrap the same size as the sides (A) covering one face with packing tape to prevent the glue from sticking. Clamp the scrap boards to each side with the taped face against the outside face of the side.

4. Apply glue inside each hole holes in the sides and assemble the sides and dowels. Apply glue to ends of top/bottom (B), and position between the sides, flush with theends of the sides, to complete the frame.

Clamp the sides to draw the frame tightly together, and measure for equal corner-to-corner diagonals to verify square corners.

5. After the glue dries, reinforce the corner joints with 30mm wood screws. Drill pilot holes through the sides into the top/bottom using a 2mm drill bit.

6. To assemble bracket assembly for the latch, glue and clamp horizontal top support (D) and vertical top support (E) together. Drill a pair of mounting holes through the horizontal top support into the vertical top support, and drive 16mm screws. Then, drill a pair of mounting holes through the vertical top support for fastening the bracket to the wall.

7. Sand the rack with 180-grit sandpaper and apply three coats of Woodoc 5 or Woodoc 10 interior sealer, in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

8. Mount the latch, centred, to the front edge of the horizontal top support (D).

9. Position the rack on the wall, and verify level. Mark the locations for the butt hinges on the wall and bottom (B). The hinges should be flush with the outside face of the sides (A).

10. Remove the rack; mount the hinges to the bottom using 16mm screws.

11. Reposition the rack on the wall, use a masonry bit the same size as the wall plugs; insert the wall plugs and drive the hinge screws into the nylon plugs.

12. Position the bracket assembly on the top (B), with the mounting holes in the vertical top support (E). Using the mounting holes for guides, drill holes; then insert wall plugs and drive in screws.

13. Rotate the swing knob to capture the rack.

14. To install the chains, drill 2mm pilot holes for panhead screws into the sides (A). Fasten the chains to the sides using panhead screws and washers, driving the screws through end links. Attach the free end of the chains to the wall with Fischer eye screws, drill holes for wall anchors, and drive in the anchors with a hammer. Thread the eye screws into the anchors, and slip the end links onto the eye screws.

To keep your ironing gear handy but out from underfoot, make this simple ironing centre.

You will need:[2] 250 x 900mm pine - sides[1] 250 x 400mm pine - top[3] 250 x 300mm pine - shelves[1] 340 x 900mm pine - back[2] hooks to hang your ironing boardWood glueClamps

Here’s how:Before assembling the unit, use a jigsaw to cut a curved corner section at the front bottom of the sides for a decorative touch.

1. Align the sides and measure from the bottom 50mm, 375mm and 700mm to mark the bottom of the shelves.

2. Place the back on a flat, level surface.

3. Working on one side at a time, glue and nail the side to the back.

4. Position the shelves as required an then glue in place by applying a bead of glue to the sides and back of each shelf.

DIY Tip:Clamps are helpful to hold the unit together until the glue has dried, preferably overnight.

5. Centre the top piece, leaving a 30mm overhang on both sides, and glue it into place.

6. Paint or stain the unit and then drill pilot holes into the top face of each side of the unit and screw in the hooks to hold your ironing board.

7. Mount securely to the wall using wall plugs and steel angle brackets on the inside of the cabinet.

Congratulations!Claire Warneke from Port Elizabeth was over the moon when informed that she had won the DIY Home Hamper.

With paint and tools to the value of R5,000 Claire immediately rushed out to buy paint to carry on improving her home.

In January 2010, Claire and her husband, Andrew, bought their first house. Havingsold their small flat, they used the profits(about R40 000) to make-over their new home.

The house was in a terrible state of disrepair - but they managed to buy it for a bargain in an up-and-coming area in Port Elizabeth called Richmond Hill. Having decided that the area had a whole lot of potential they were prepared to spend a little on home improvement.

The house had been rented for a number of years, and they only saw it twice before putting in an offer. Upon receiving the keys they we went through the house in a mild state of horror. There was a lot more that needed to be done than originally thought!

ABOVE: Claire Warneke was over the moon upon receiving her Bosch hamper. “I love my new power tools and can’t wait to put them to good use! says Claire.

RIGHT: Claire was excited to be able to pop into her local Prominent Paints store and order up enough paint to complete

her home improvement projects.

Luckily, this couple is passionate about design and decor, and knew they could pull something together on a small budget, after determining the “Needs to be done” rather than the “Would like to be done!”

Here is Claire’s makeover story...

Firstly, the carpeting. Our puppy thought that the carpets smelled ‘delicious’ - running from room to room, sniffing out each square inch.

That was the sign that the carpets definitelyneeded replacing! We also ripped up the carpeting in the passage and lounge areas.

We were hoping for some stunning, long-forgotten wooden floorsunderneath the 3 layers of dust-laden carpeting but were horrified tofind terrible borer-beetledamage. Exterminators were immediately called in and the entire house was flooded with poison.Three treatments were applied to ensure the

Page 25: Home-Dzine online · It’s out with the old and in with the new in typical Decorex Durban style. And yet, this mearoundit’s with a sensa onalnewtwist! From 18 – 21 March 2011,

23

beetles were completely gone.

Fortunately the floors were still structurallysound, so we decided to lay good quality laminates on top of them to stick with the original character of the house.

We got great advice on the different kinds of laminates from Builders Warehouse, who helped us choose which flooring would work best in theheavy-traffic passage.

We couldn’t afford to replace the kitchen cabinets, and they were in pretty decent condition, so we also painted them white and got new hardware for them. The difference was incredible! My mom even decided to buy the same handles for her kitchen.

The high quality laminate flooring isextremely easy to clean and although I was slightly worried about having it in the kitchen, I’m extremely happy with it now.

The next chall-enge was paint. We decided to do the whole inside of the house white so that we could add colourful accents at a later stage.

We painted some of the knotty pine ceilings.

ABOVE: The white paint has given a more open, airy feel, as the knotty pine was quite dark and dingy.

Page 26: Home-Dzine online · It’s out with the old and in with the new in typical Decorex Durban style. And yet, this mearoundit’s with a sensa onalnewtwist! From 18 – 21 March 2011,

What next?

The garden is now a work in progress. I’m hoping to have an 80% edible garden, and already have some basil, rosemary, potatoes, tomatoes, sage and butternut thriving in the newly composted flowerbed. (according to our botanist friend who offered advice, the Builders Warehouse compost and grass toppings are the best, so we invested in a number of bags!) We also laid down some grass for our puppy to enjoy.

The teeny tiny bathroom is our next challenge - see next page. I would love to put down a concrete floor over the tiles- one with a stain and pattern in it. We are also saving up for this. But in the mean-time, we had the tiles re-grouted so that

they looked nice and clean, and we put up some decent cabinetry and shelving. We also put up a shower nozzle so that the bath can double as a shower. There’s not much else we could do in this small space, although I would love to increase the size of the window!

As you can see, this is something that I’m really passionate about, and I absolutely love coming home to my own creative expression everyday. The great thing is that there is still so much to do and so much to look forward to!

Thanks so much for your newsletter, it’s inspiring to read about make-overs and products that are actually available in SA.

• Sand your piece of driftwood until nice and smooth.

• Find a design that you can transfer onto the wood using carbon or tracing paper.

Burn Out

• Use a Dremel VersaTip to burn the design into the wood.

• Finish off with three coats of Woodoc 30 (inland regions) or Woodoc 50 (coastal regions).

Cornelia - our Cape Town Diva - shows you how to transform a piece of driftwood into unique wall decor.

Girl TalkWalk into any hardware store and you will see shelves and shelves of screws, ranging from small, short screws to long, thick screws. Why so many?

The obvious answer is that there are a variety of screw for different applications.

If you refer to last week’s Girl Talk, where we discussed various board products, you will remember that we discussed supawood, bisonbord and plywood. Each of these board products is available in thickness ranging from 3mm up to 32mm (or more in some cases).

Fastening these different boards together requires screws of varying lengths and thickness, depending upon the project you are making.

Use a small 12mm screw for board of 16mm thickness, and a larger 25mm screw for boards of 32mm thickness.

With timber and board in hand, now you need to know the right type of fastening to join your boards together. There is more than one type of screw!

Cut ScrewCut screws are designed to easily screw into hard and soft wood, reducing the need for a pilot hole.

Tips and Tricks

• When using a power tool, variable speed must be used with low torque

• Smooth shank is used for joining wood to wood. The smooth shank is used to eliminate any gaps between the wood that may occur.

• Full thread shank is ideally used for joining metal or plate (for example: hinges) to wood

• Use a screw as thin as possible when screwing on the edge of wood to prevent cracking

• The shank is unthreaded and the smooth portion immediately under the head, allows two pieces of wood to be pulled tightly as the shank turns freely in the top piece whilst pulling the bottom piece tighter.

• Thread is coarser and wider spaced than the traditional wood screw, which offers a far better ‘bite’ into wood.

Did you Know

You can measure a screw by the size of the head, its thickness or by the length
