GETTING STARTED

Introduction

To help you get started, we’ve prepared this setup guide, which explains how to set up and manage your new Home

Control service.

In a nutshell, this process involves:

Registering online at: MyVerizon.com

Physically installing each device using the online Setup Wizard. (Additional installation and assembly may

be required, based on the manufacturer’s Installation instructions included in your product kit.)

Setting up and activating each product through a ―pairing‖ process. This is also done through the Setup

Wizard.

Setup Wizard Overview

For your convenience, the Setup Wizard program will walk you through the initial registration, installation, setup, and

activation of your Home Monitoring and Control products. These products are referred to as devices. Detailed

hardware installation instructions for certain devices (such as the door locks) may not be covered in the Setup

Wizard. Therefore, to complete installation you should refer to the manufacturer’s Installation instructions

(included in your product kit). This can be done after you’ve finished or during the Setup Wizard procedures to

activate your devices.

Understanding the Pairing Process

During the Setup Wizard, you will go through a device activation process known as ―pairing‖, which allows the

Gateway device and / or Remote Control to communicate wirelessly with the other devices in your home service.

Points to Remember

To enable operation of your Home Monitoring and Control service, you must pair the Gateway device and

at least one other device. This process is performed from your computer online via the MyVerizon Home

Control web application. The Setup Wizard cannot be run from your compatible smartphone, iPod touch,

or FiOS TV.

If you don’t have time to finish setting up all your devices, no problem. You’ll have the opportunity to do so

later. We’ll explain how in the chapter topic, Completing Unfinished Business.

Before you begin setup, we suggest that you connect a power strip to a wall outlet within a few feet of

your Internet Router. As you go through the Setup Wizard, you may find it more convenient to temporarily

connect each device to the power strip for activation or ―pairing‖. Afterwards, you can remove the paired

device from the power strip and plug it into a wall outlet in the desired location of your home.

Please do not plug in any devices until instructed by the Setup Wizard to do so.

Helpful Setup Wizard Tips

As you go through the online Setup Wizard, here are some things to keep in mind:

You will need a broadband-connected PC or laptop. It will be easier with a wireless laptop because you

can carry it around and view the Setup Wizard screens right next to the device you’re installing.

In the photo below, this customer is holding his laptop and viewing the Setup Wizard while using the hand-

held Remote Control to activate his Smart Thermostat (shown mounted on the wall).

You should be sitting near your computer’s Internet Router (within 5 feet) when you initially begin the

Setup Wizard. Have the Gateway device readily available because one of the first things you’ll do is

connect the two items as described in the setup procedure. Have your other devices nearby too.

Please note that during the Setup Wizard, if there is no User activity for 30 minutes, the service will time

out and you will need to log back into the program to continue.

During the Setup Wizard you’ll have 30 seconds to ―pair‖ (activate) the Gateway device with each device

(including the optional Remote Control). It just involves pressing a few buttons to get the Gateway or

remote to communicate with the other device. You’ll soon get the hang of it! If you take longer than 30

seconds, you'll need to repeat the procedure for that device.

If pairing a door lock with the Gateway: During setup, before attaching the door lock, you will

assemble the door lock first, and then do the pairing. Afterwards, you will install the lock on your door. In

the Setup Wizard, after completing the steps, you should receive a message stating that your door lock is

now set up. Upon receiving the message, wait at least 3 minutes before pairing the next device or using

your door lock. This allows time for signals to pass between the Gateway device and your door lock. If

pairing is not successful, please try again. (Note: Door locks can only be paired using the Gateway

device, not the Remote Control.)

The Setup Wizard may not cover complete detailed instructions for the physical assembly and

placement of each device. It does show you the tools required for installation. However, you may still

need to refer to your manufacturer’s Installation Guide afterwards to complete the physical installation

of certain devices. (See ―Product Information and Other Support Needs‖ in the Home Monitoring and

Control Owner’s Manual).

BEGINNING THE SETUP PROCESS

Registering at MyVerizon.com

If you don’t already have a MyVerizon username and password, please register at myverizon.com

Unpacking Your Equipment

The devices in your product order are detailed on the packing list inside the shipping container. Each device is

individually wrapped and contains the manufacturer’s Installation instructions. Unwrap each device and save the

instruction sheets for reference. Set your devices aside for now and continue with Installing and Activating Your

Devices.

Do not attempt to install any devices until you have gone through the Setup Wizard (described below). The

Setup Wizard walks you through the steps to install, set up, and activate (pair) each device you purchased.

Some devices will be activated first and then installed, while other devices may be installed first and then

activated. The Setup Wizard will guide you through the proper order to prepare each device for operation.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT DEVICE INSTALLATION

Some devices may require electrical or mechanical expertise, such as the Energy Reader, Smart

Thermostat, and Door Locks. If you hire your own electrician or locksmith to install these items, don’t forget

that setup ALSO requires pairing of the devices through the Setup Wizard before you can operate them.

So if you need assistance there as well, you might ask if they can help you.

We’re Off to See the Wizard

You won’t find a Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, or Tin Man here. But the Setup Wizard does lead you down the road to

set up wireless communication with your Home Monitoring and Control devices. We won’t describe everything that

happens in this process, however. You’ll see all that as you go through the program. We just want to help get you

started.

The Setup Wizard begins with the Notification Settings page:

This page is used to enable device Notifications to be sent to your email account(s) and / or cell phone(s).

Notifications are messages you receive whenever certain device activity takes place in your Home Monitoring and

Control service — for example, when a door or window is opened or closed, or your camera detects motion in a room

and starts recording.

As you go through the Setup Wizard to set up Notifications (later on in the program), you’ll see a Configure /

Notifications screen similar to the following:

Page 9: Home Monitoring and Control service provided by Verizon ......Home Monitoring and Control service provided by Verizon Online LLC . ... held Remote Control to activate his Smart Thermostat

Setting Up Your Home Control Devices

Page 7

This screen is where you select the device events that will trigger Notifications to be sent — via email and / or SMS

text (mobile phone messages). You simply click the desired checkboxes to select.

You are now ready to begin setting up your devices.

You should now be at the Choose Device page (see figure below), where you will first set up your Gateway device.

This is the main device that communicates with all the other devices in your Home Control service.

In the figure below, the gray Gateway Device thumbnail means that your Gateway device has not been paired. So

that’s your first task – to pair the Gateway. This screen also shows you the other devices you have purchased, which

will need to be paired:

To begin setup:

1. Press the Setup Gateway Device Now button to continue.

The Prepare page displays, showing you the hardware items you’ll need to complete this procedure:

When making your selection, use discretion and select only the really important Notifications. If you

choose too many, you could receive a very large volume of messages in your email and / or SMS account.

Also, check with your mobile phone service provider as text message charges may apply.

Page 10: Home Monitoring and Control service provided by Verizon ......Home Monitoring and Control service provided by Verizon Online LLC . ... held Remote Control to activate his Smart Thermostat

Page 8

2. Click the Next button.

The Connect page displays, showing you how to connect the Gateway device to your Internet Router.

3. Follow the on-screen instructions, and when finished, click the Next button to continue.

Page 11: Home Monitoring and Control service provided by Verizon ......Home Monitoring and Control service provided by Verizon Online LLC . ... held Remote Control to activate his Smart Thermostat

Setting Up Your Home Control Devices

Page 9

4. Now you are ready to power up the Gateway device. Follow the on-screen instructions, and then press the

Next button:

While the Gateway device is powering up and connecting to the Internet Router, you’ll see several green

LED’s blinking on the Gateway device. This may take between 10 to 20 minutes to complete, so please be

patient. The service will instruct you when to press the Next button to continue:

Page 12: Home Monitoring and Control service provided by Verizon ......Home Monitoring and Control service provided by Verizon Online LLC . ... held Remote Control to activate his Smart Thermostat

Setting Up Your Home Control Devices

Page 10

5. After connecting, a service message displays: Please Wait. Device Connecting. This may take 10-20

minutes. Do not unplug your Gateway device during this process:

After the Gateway device is successfully connected via Ethernet, the Connect page displays. The service

prompts, ―Do you want to set up your Gateway Device to run wirelessly?‖

6. To respond to the message, it is recommended that you click the Yes button. Why? Because if you enable

wireless connection (Wi-Fi), then afterwards you can physically move the Gateway device (away from your

Page 13: Home Monitoring and Control service provided by Verizon ......Home Monitoring and Control service provided by Verizon Online LLC . ... held Remote Control to activate his Smart Thermostat

Page 11

Internet Router) and pair more easily with your door locks and other devices located throughout your home.

By the way, door locks are ALWAYS paired using the Gateway device, not the Remote Control. Moving the

Gateway device closer to your other devices provides greater signal strength for optimal communication in

your home service. Please note that the Gateway device, if moved to another location, will still require plug-

in to a nearby power outlet.

If you click the No button to keep the wired Ethernet connection, Gateway setup will be complete and you

can proceed to set up and activate your other devices. You can always switch to Wi-Fi later on if desired.

(How to switch to Wi-Fi is described in the Home Monitoring and Control Owner’s Manual).

7. Select the desired option:

To keep your wired Ethernet connection, a. Click the No button.

b. Continue below.

To enable wireless connection, See Follow the Wireless Road.

After clicking No, if Gateway setup is successful, a message displays, Congratulations! Your Gateway

Device is now set up.

8. To proceed with the next device, see chapter topic, Setting Up Another Device.

Follow the Wireless Road

Setting Up Your Gateway for a Wi-Fi Connection

After choosing to set up your Gateway for wireless operation, the service begins scanning for wireless networks (so it

can find your account).

When scanning completes, the service displays:

Here you will need to know two pieces of information — your Home wireless network name or SSID, and your Home

network password or WEP key. This information can be found on your Internet Router. (Check the label on the

bottom or backside of the router.)

Page 15: Home Monitoring and Control service provided by Verizon ......Home Monitoring and Control service provided by Verizon Online LLC . ... held Remote Control to activate his Smart Thermostat

Setting Up Your Home Control Devices

Page 13

1. In the list of wireless networks, select your Home network name. (If not found, click the Back button and

scan again, as sometimes it may not be detected the first time.)

2. In the Network Password field, enter your WEP key:

3. To continue, select the Next button.

The service verifies your wireless security credentials. If successful, the service displays the status of your

wireless connection as CONNECTED:

Page 16: Home Monitoring and Control service provided by Verizon ......Home Monitoring and Control service provided by Verizon Online LLC . ... held Remote Control to activate his Smart Thermostat

Setting Up Your Home Control Devices

Page 14

4. From here, just select the Next button and follow the remaining on-screen instructions. Only a few more

screens to go and you’re all finished!

At the end, if everything is successful, a message displays, Congratulations! Your Gateway Device is

now set up.

5. Now proceed with setting up the next device as described in the following section.

Page 17: Home Monitoring and Control service provided by Verizon ......Home Monitoring and Control service provided by Verizon Online LLC . ... held Remote Control to activate his Smart Thermostat

Page 15

Setting Up Another Device

Now that you’ve set up the Gateway device, you can proceed with the next device.

1. Select the Set Up Another Device button:

The Choose Device page displays:

Page 16

2. Choose the next device by selecting the Begin Setup button on the desired thumbnail. If you don’t see all

your devices, use the vertical scroll bar or the << and >> arrows to scroll through the rest of the list:

3. During setup, the optional Remote Control should be paired next (if you have one).

After pairing the remote, you can use it to add and pair other devices to your home service (except the door

locks and cameras, which are only paired with the Gateway). We’ll show you how in the next topic, Adding

a Device to Your Home Network Using the Remote Control.

4. Continue pairing the rest of your devices by following the on-screen instructions. (Remember, if you get

tired along the way or don’t have time to finish, you can return later. (See topic, Completing Unfinished

Business.)

5. When you are finished adding devices, proceed to the final chapter, Completing Device Hardware

Installation.

Adding a Device to Your Home Network Using the Remote Control

If you purchased the Remote Control, you’ll find it comes in handy for the following reasons:

It simplifies the process of adding a device to your Home Monitoring and Control service. You can simply

carry the remote over to the device that you’re adding and pair with that device.

It lets you quickly activate Modes, which are ways for you to enable multiple devices to work together (such

as unlocking a door and turning on lights and appliances at the same time). (You’ll learn about Modes in the

Home Monitoring and Control Owner’s Manual.)

IMPORTANT REMOTE CONTROL PAIRING POINTS

Before pairing the Remote Control with the Gateway device, make sure the remote

is sufficiently charged. For information, see How to Charge the Remote Control in this chapter. For complete battery charging instructions, a link is also provided in the Setup Wizard.

After pairing the first device with the Remote Control, wait 30 seconds before

pairing the next device with the remote. This allows time for signals to pass between the

Remote Control, the Gateway device, and the device that is being paired.

When pairing the door locks, always use the Gateway device, not the Remote

Control.

Cameras are not paired using the Remote Control. During setup, they are connected automatically with the Gateway device.

Pairing Example Using the Remote Control

1. Make sure the Remote Control itself has already been activated (paired) with the Gateway device.

2. If the device you want to pair with the remote requires AC power (such as the Appliance Switch or Indoor

Light Module), plug it into a standard 110 volt AC outlet or power strip.

3. Bring the Remote Control within 5 feet of the device you want to pair. (In this example, we’ll use the

Appliance Switch device to pair with the remote. But the same principle applies to most other devices.)

4. Press the Plus ( + ) Device button on the Remote Control:

5. Now press the pairing button on the device. (Note: You can only pair one device at a time.)

The LED’s on both the device and the blue LED on the remote start flashing:

If pairing is successful, the LED’s on both the device and remote will display a steady blue light.

6. Press any button on the remote to complete the pairing process.

The LED on the remote turns off.

The device has just been added to your home service using your Remote Control.

7. Now all you need to do is plug any 110-volt appliance into the Appliance Switch device to operate your

appliance remotely. (If you just paired the Indoor Light Module, it may now be connected to any

incandescent light or lamp for operation.)

This product is for 110 volt appliances only, such as TV’s, stereos, fans, floor heaters, smaller air

conditioning window units, and most kitchen appliances.

How to Charge the Remote Control

The Remote Control comes with a lithium battery. If it is not sufficiently charged, you will not be able to use the

remote to pair with your other devices.

To charge the Remote Control:

1. Close the cover on the front of the remote.

2. Connect one end of the USB cable (included in your product kit) to the slot on the bottom of the remote.

3. Connect the other end of the cable to the USB port on the back or side of your Gateway device (or laptop if

you prefer).

When charging, the LED on the bottom of the remote is red.

4. Allow 1-2 hours for the battery to charge.

When sufficiently charged, the LED on the bottom of the remote turns blue.

WARNING! When connecting a 110-volt appliance to the Appliance Switch device, DO NOT plug in an

appliance that requires constant power, such as a refrigerator or freezer. Connecting such appliances

may cause food spoilage if the Appliance Switch device is turned off. Also, do not use any other

critical appliances that are designed to be left on, such as critical in-home medical equipment.
