IntroductionPeople involved in delivering activity on the ground at clubs and centres are at the heart of boating in the UK. The RYA wants to identify how we can support what you are planning to do in the future.

The RYA is committed to running programmes that drive demand and regular participation on the water.

Now is a good time to listen and engage and find out about: the issues that are important to clubs and centres and any barriers that exist achievements in recent years and the challenges that remain what is going to influence participation on the water in the future

The RYA is two years into strategic and regional plans, and at the half way point of investment support from UK Sport, Sport England, sportscotland, Sport Wales and Sport Northern Ireland. By late 2020 new funding proposals will be submitted.

This toolkit is designed to capture conversations about the future. It gathers your views, your successes, what you have learnt and the challenges you face going forwards.

This is your opportunity to influence future RYA funding bids, strategies and plans.

It is flexible and can be used if you just have 30 minutes during a committee meeting to have a discussion, or you want to schedule a longer workshop. It’s up to you.

There are some instructions for each question or task, and the worksheets you need to capture your views.

If you have already had similar discussions or developed strategies for the long term please share these and don’t feel you have to repeat the exercise.

The separate insight and data document can be shared with participants to frame your discussions.

Some pages are left purposefully blank to ensure worksheets can be printed.

There are lots of ways of sending us your views – an online form, or the worksheets in this toolkit can be photographed and emailed to us.

Facilitating the discussions

BeforeThe timings for the 30 minute discussion are a guide. You may want to allow longer – the idea is that if you only have a short slot during a committee meeting there is a slimmed down version of the questions, if you have longer to consider it then set some time aside for a workshop.

You don’t have to complete all the questions / tasks – pick the ones you feel are most relevant to you or where you think you have most to say.

DuringGive a clear introduction to why the discussion is taking place

Tell participants what is going to happen to their ideas and views

Encourage turn taking – the importance of listening and speaking in turn, making sure everyone is able to be heard and all views are considered / captured

Encourage people who can digest, understand and emphasise with other people’s ideas rather than only think about their own

Where it is suggested you break into groups think about the ideal size. Too small and discussion might be stilted, too large and some might not be able to contribute. Between 3 and 6 people per group is a good guide.

No idea is a bad idea, capture everything.

Decide how you are going to capture ideas:

Someone can type into the worksheets as you go You can print the worksheets out and write your answers in them Come up with your own worksheets

30 minute discussion

The following questions could be covered in a committee meeting with a discussion of around 30 minutes.

IntroductionPeople involved in delivering activity on the ground at clubs and centres are at the heart of boating in the UK. The RYA wants to identify how as a Governing Body they can support what we are doing now and what we are planning to do in the future.

The RYA is committed to running programmes that drive demand and regular participation on the water.

The RYA is two years into strategic and regional plans, and at the half way point of investment support from UK Sport, Sport England, sportscotland, Sport Wales and Sport Northern Ireland. By late 2020 new funding proposals will be submitted.

Now is a good time to listen and engage about the long term future.

Over the next 30 minutes we are going to explore: The successes and the challenges you still face The biggest problem you need to solve going forwards and the support we need

from the RYA. Our future priorities – what we need to do more of, what we need to stop doing.

Introduction: As we look to the future it is important to critically analyse our collective achievements and capture what we have learnt.

Suggested methodSplit into an even number of groups. Half the groups consider the questions about your club, centre or organisation, the other the questions about the RYA. Both sets of groups record their answers. After 4 minutes, swap papers, look through the answers of the other group and add anything. Spend no more than 2 mins on this part.

VisionTask: Biggest problem still to solve

Time: 10 minutes

Introduction: A shared vision for what we are collectively trying to achieve can help focus strategies and plans. Defining what we want to pursue and accomplish is important.

We are going to define the biggest problem we think we need to solve to help set out what we and the RYA could do in the future.

This is not an exercise to re-write our organisation’s or the RYA’s vision and mission, but it is a chance to identify a common purpose, the things that are important to us all, and a shared sense of direction?

Suggested methodIn an even number of groups, consider the questions below for 7 minutes. Swap papers and look at what the other set of groups came up with, highlighting anything that is

a) the same b) different that you like / agree with (3 minutes)

Idea: use different colour highlighters for a) and b)

1. What is the biggest problem you need to or want to solve as an organisation in the next 3/4/5 years?

2. What can the RYA do to support you to solve this problem?
