HOW TO DO THE ASSIGNMENT:

Research the required Scriptures in this lesson. Research other sources of your choosing. Based on these scriptures, develop reasons why we should study the Bible.

Make A List Of Reasons Why We Study The Bible (You Are Not Required To Submit The List For Grading).

GRADING:

As with any assignment, you will be graded on a number of different points. You will be expected to come up with certain reasons for studying the Bible based on the scriptures given. You will also be graded on the following points.

1) Your reply must contain the reasons found in the scriptures provided. Reasons found in scriptures not provided will also improve your grade.

2) Your reply must directly answer the question. It should not be evasive or ambiguous. The grader will be looking for a clear and thorough treatment of the question.

HOW TO INTERPRET THE BIBLE ASSIGNMENT (see Section II in the Study Guide):

(not more than 3 sentences per answer) 1. Define “interpret” as we use it. Define the modern idea of “interpret”. 2. Define hermeneutics and biblical hermeneutics and exegesis. 3. Give a few reasons for biblical hermeneutics. 4. In what two seemingly contradictory ways should the Bible be read? 5. Why should we study the history of interpretation? 6. What was the Jewish method of interpretation? 7. What was the allegorical method of interpretation? 8. What is the rationalistic method of interpretation? 9. What is the true method of Bible interpretation? 10. What does this method of interpretation embrace? 11. State and discuss at least half of the first eight rules of interpretation. 12. What is one of the most fundamental rules of interpretation? 13. State a few rules on how to understand a seemingly difficult passage. 14. State several other principles of interpretation. 15. Should literal passages be spiritualized? Why? 16. How does a knowledge of God’s plan aid in understanding the Bible? 17. What three classes of people are dealt with in Scripture? 18. What truths should be emphasized more than others? 19. How does a general knowledge of the Bible help in interpretation? 20. Name a few "musts" in Scripture interpretation. 21. What was our Lord’s most serious offense? 22. State a few facts concerning "words" in Bible interpretation. 23. State a few facts concerning "idioms" in Bible interpretation. 24. State a few facts of interpretation concerning English translations. 25. How are seeming contradictions of Scripture made clear? 26. Does the Bible record only the word of God? 27. Has God ever had to change His plan temporarily? Why? 28. What kinds of figurative language do we find in Scripture? 29. Why did God use figures of speech? 30. Do figures of speech do away with literal truth? 31. Is figurative language as true as literal language? 32. How can we tell the difference between figurative and literal language? 33. On what basis should all men understand the Bible alike? 34. Why do men misunderstand the Bible language when they understand the

same language in the right way when anyone else uses it?

Instructions for Inductive Study Guide on Psalms 90-92 (see Section II in the Study Guide):

1. General Instructions.

Appropriate charts are provided at the end of this section to help you formulate your response.

If this course is being taken by a student at the Bachelor level or higher, then this assignment is particularly for that individual. An Associate level student will find this assignment very difficult and should be discouraged from accomplishing this particular task without proper supervision.

A suitable amount of time and effort should be devoted to this study. It is strongly urged that work on this begin immediately, rather than put off until the last week or two of the trimester.

The response is to be neatly typed, in any form that will make it "user-friendly" to lay people using it. Dot-matrix printers are acceptable, provided the draft mode is not used. Please number the pages, and include an annotated bibliography of "Works Cited," which should represent the works you yourself consulted. The guide is to be in a ready-to-use form, i.e., in a form that you could pass out next week in your own church. There is no suggested page limit or suggested time length for the study; what is crucial is that Psalms 90-92 be treated adequately according to the instructions here.

2. Intended Use.

The target audience and occasion for use should be an adult, college-age, or youth group that is meeting in a Sunday School class, in-church or home Bible study, mid-week teaching service, etc. The study should extend over several weeks.

3. Features.

The study guide must include the following features.

A. Introduction.

1) Briefly explain the method of inductive Bible study, emphasizing the text-based nature of the approach. Give any helps as to how to use this guide, your goals as author/leader of the study, and desired outcomes for the users of the study.

2) Introduce the user to the book of Psalms. Include discussion of the following:

• Name of the book

• Canonical placement (Hebrew and English Bibles)

• The nature of the Psalter as a collection

• Introduction to Hebrew Poetry

• Genres of the Psalms

Page 4: Homework I NAME BIBLE STUDY ASSIGNMENT...BIBLE STUDY ASSIGNMENT (see Section I in the Study Guide): Write a one to two page essay (250-500 words) explaining why it is important for

• Authorship issues

• Brief outline of the book

• Major themes (Theology) of the book

B. Study Questions and Helps

(1) Questions. This section is the heart of the study guide. Please give careful consideration to your questions. They should be questions that force readers into the text, as well as stimulate readers' interest. You should avoid overly subjective questions such as "What do you think about this passage?" on the one hand and "wooden" questions such as "What does verse 3 say?"

Each question must include a textual reference, such as "According to verse 4..." or "Look up Deut 33:27. How do Moses? words here bear upon his words in Ps 90:1?" or "What is the issue in verse 14?" or "In what ways do verses 11-16 direct us to the thoughts expressed in Ps 92:1-4?"

(2) Study Helps. These are to supplement the study questions, and should include such things as additional references that are relevant to the verse, phrase, word, or concept at hand, a chart, a time line, and/or suggestions as to where further information may be found. This last suggestion will begin to force the students into such reference works as concordances, Bible dictionaries or encyclopedias, etc. Be sure to give them ones that will likely be found in a typical (or your) church library.

(3) Leader's Guide. You must also supply a Leader's Guide with the study guide, containing brief answers to all of the questions, as well as suggestions for leaders that go beyond what you want to include in the study guide itself. You should not include too much substantive material about the Psalms here - i.e., be sure to include most background, contextual, and other such information in the student guide, not just the Leader’s Guide. Rather, mainly include here suggestions to the leader for leading the discussion or for further reading on particular points.

Special Note. Remember that this study is of a group of psalms. The study guide should introduce students to the principles and techniques of reading psalms in their literary contexts, and it should force them to consider the ways in which these psalms build upon and comment upon each other. Reserve some questions to ask about connections between specific verses in adjacent psalms, or about larger inter-psalm links. Also include questions forcing students to deal with the psalms preceding and following Psalms 90-92.

Page 5: Homework I NAME BIBLE STUDY ASSIGNMENT...BIBLE STUDY ASSIGNMENT (see Section I in the Study Guide): Write a one to two page essay (250-500 words) explaining why it is important for

C. Theological Outline

The entire section (Psalms 90-92) should be outlined, according to the natural units. This should be fairly detailed. A one-sentence summary of each Psalm’s message should be included, as well as one for the theme of each psalm section, emphasizing the theological relevance of each (i.e., the main theological principles of each). This outline may be placed separately, by itself in the study guide, or it may be incorporated into the discussion questions in a running fashion.

D. Suggested Applications

You should be sensitive to relevant applications all along the way in this study, and should pass these along to the reader at appropriate points. These applications should be adduced from the "principlized" outline. Naturally, there will be some major applications to make at the conclusion of the study, but help the reader to see the relevance of the message as s/he goes.

4. Concluding Comments and Pep Talk.

You will not begin to understand and assimilate the message of these psalms until you have read them through many times (including in Hebrew, if you know this language). You should read through Book IV of the Psalter (Psalms 90-106) several times, as well as Book III (Psalms 73-89) at least once or twice, in order to understand Psalms 90-92 in their proper literary context.

Feel free to be creative in layout, presentation, or approach, within the above guidelines. Think of a real-life church situation in which you might use this. Please be careful to let the text itself determine your literary units, including the length and content of each lesson. The study should be detailed enough as to allow for several (or many) weeks of study for a study group. The actual decision on how many that will be and what they will cover is left to you. Above all, remember that you are reading and dealing with God's Word. Ask Him to teach you, as you go about the task of preparing a study guide to teach others. It is a wonderful privilege we have to devote concentrated time and study to God's very words. Let none of us take that for granted. Dig in, and enjoy!

ARCHAEOLOGICAL ASSIGNMENT (see Section XLI in the Study Guide):

Select a scripture from the Bible and briefly tell what it is about (one or two sentences). The passage you choose may be any length, but should not be an entire book. Then list three separate archaeological finds that support the passage, and briefly tell how.

EXAMPLE

Passage: The Book Of Acts Chapters 16 And 18.

Summary: Paul's Second Missionary Journey.

Archaeological Finds: 1) Ephesus..Goddess Diana And Temple For Worship Were Found In Early 1800's. Theater Where People Rioted Also Found. 2) Athens..Mars Hill Found, Along With Carved Benches For Seating 3) Corinth..Is An Actual City, Inhabited Until 1854. Existed As Bible Said It Did. As you can see, each of these finds directly supports the authenticity of scripture, and verifies that what it says concerning these locations is true and accurate.

As you complete this assignment, keep in mind that its purpose is to make the student familiar with archaeological supplements, but more importantly to cause you to be aware that this feature can lend great support and authenticity to Bible study. It is exceptionally good for validating scriptural truth in sermon preparation. History may not be highly interesting to many students, but they would do well to refer to this feature often in Bible studies and sermon preparation.

PASSAGE: any choice is acceptable

HEBREW AND GREEK STUDIES ASSIGNMENTS (see Section XLII in the Study Guide): Copy each alphabet ten times (or more if necessary to write each letter correctly. You will encounter a course in basic Greek and Hebrew later on in your studies.)

Practice in building the skill of using the Strong's Dictionary to find like Hebrew numbers.

Instructions: In this segment you will look up the word L I G H T in the Strong's Dictionary to find only like numbers and the Scriptures that match that same number.

For example, using the following Scripture: "Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path". Psalm 119:105. When you look up this number in the Dictionary next to the Scripture, Psalm 119:105 you find the Hebrew number is ___216___, and you also see the number is upright or straight up and down. All numbers for the Hebrew dictionary have this identifying feature. In contrast all Greek numbers are slanted or in italics.

Instructions: Write out five ( 5 ) complete Scriptures that use the same Hebrew number, 216, for the word light:

Practice in building the skill of using Greek numbers and finding Scriptures with that number using the Dictionary in the front of the Strong's Concordance.

Instructions: In this segment you will again look up the word L I G H T in the Dictionary in the front of the Strong's Concordance. But this time you will only use like numbers and the Scriptures that match that same number for New Testament Scriptures.

For example, using the following Scripture: "Then spake Jesus again unto them saying, I am the light of the world. . ." When you look up this number in the Dictionary next to the New Testament Scripture, John 8:12, you find the Greek number is ___5457___, and you also see the number is slanted or in italics. All numbers for the Greek dictionary have this identifying feature. In contrast, you found in the last lesson that all Hebrew numbers found in the Old Testament, 216, were straight up and down. Look at both to see the distinct difference.

As noted previously, there are at times many different original words that are translated as the same English word. Write down how many different words are translated by the English word below. Then list the dictionary numbers as shown in the example. Example: fornication: Hebrew - 2 Greek - 3 2181, 8457 4202, 4203 1608 salt: Hebrew - Greek - praise: Hebrew - Greek - anoint: Hebrew - Greek - grace: Hebrew - Greek - pride: Hebrew - Greek - Learn to use the resources located in the Greek and Hebrew dictionaries. Look up the following English word and find the corresponding dictionary number. Place that number in "A". Write the transliteration of the word after "B." and the meaning and application of the word after "C." For "D." write how the word is translated in the KJV, and for "E." write what your research tells you about the verse the word is found in. Example: Enticing: 1 Cor. 2:4, "And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power." A. 3981 B. peithos

INSTRUCTIONS FOR WORD-STUDY ASSIGNMENTS (See Section XLVII in the Study Guide)

Associate level students will find this assignment very difficult and should not be required to complete it in its entirety. The word-study assignment for Bachelor level or higher students doing an Old Testament passage in their exegetical paper is as follows. The papers should be 3-4 pages, single-spaced typed. Primary consideration should be given to your own work using an exhaustive English concordance, one that shows what Hebrew and Greek roots are behind the English words you read in your text. The goal of this word study is to understand the terms that the Biblical writers used, not to focus on an English Bible translation committee’s renderings of that term (which may be different in different contexts). Good tools are available for those who do not know the original languages to be able to access the original terms.

Tthe goal of this assignment is to get you to consider and experience the riches of a fairly detailed word study, to understand what goes into one, and to understand something of what goes into the writing of articles on individual words (or word groups) in the standard reference tools recommended (Bible dictionaries and encyclopedias, theological word books, etc.). After having this exposure, and doing a detailed exercise such as this at least once, you should be well-equipped for knowing what is essential in a word study, and how to trim it down to a more manageable length in a regular sermon.

Here are the steps you should follow.

1. Find the Hebrew root of the word SANCTIFICATION as used in Psalm 119:9, 11, using an English concordance that is keyed to Hebrew words. Note that conventions of transliterating [i.e., spelling] Hebrew words will differ.

2. Write down (in English) every occurrence of this root in the passage you are studying (give a short phrase along with the verse reference). Highlight the word under consideration by boldfacing, underlining, or printing it in all caps. Remember that one Hebrew word is sometimes rendered into English by two or more words.

3. Identify how many times (and where) this root occurs in the book you are studying. Here, you are trying to identify an author’s tendencies, so deal with a passage in 1 Samuel by looking at the word in 1-2 Samuel, for example.

4. Sort and classify the uses of the words found by forms (verbs, nouns, adjectives, etc.).

5. List the different ways in which this root is translated in English in two different versions of the Bible. Note how the words are translated (1) in your passage, (2) in the book under consideration, and (3) in the rest of the Old Testament. You do not need to give chapter and verse citations in this section, except for the first part (how it is translated in your passage).

Page 23: Homework I NAME BIBLE STUDY ASSIGNMENT...BIBLE STUDY ASSIGNMENT (see Section I in the Study Guide): Write a one to two page essay (250-500 words) explaining why it is important for

6. What are some different Hebrew words that relate to the word under consideration? Give selected examples (not an exhaustive list), with Bible references. You can access this information by looking in an exhaustive concordance at the different English words used to translate the Hebrew word you are considering, and then checking to see if these words are used to translate other Hebrew words than the one you are working with.

7. Now - and only now - read one or two reference sources on your word (Bible dictionary or encyclopedia, or theological word book), and summarize any additional information found there that you did not glean in your own study. This section should not be more than ? page in length.

Conclude with 1/4 to 1/3 page connecting your insights into the word’s meaning back into the passage that you are dealing with. In other words, this word-study exercise is not to be done as a labor for its own sake, but rather in the service of understanding your passage better. Make this connection in your concluding remarks.

NAME __________________________________________________________ THEOLOGICAL TERMINOLOGY: (See Section XLIX in the Study Guide) In the studies of the terms you will have undoubtedly found words that you had not known before, or had a vague idea as to either meaning or usage. You may have found other words that had more meaning to them than you previously realized. In the space below, you are to review the assigned texts and record five words or phrases that were not previously given that have taken on new or added meaning since your studies began. Next to each of the five words that you have selected, write what significance has been attached to the word for you. You may want to consider what new dimensions have been added that you have never considered until now. You can even choose words that have come to your attention for the first time that expands your theological horizons. You should put your responses on a separate sheet of paper. This portion of the assignment will count one-fourth of your entire grade for this section.

FOUNDATIONS OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH Your Creative Writing Assignment is to correlate all the principles you have learned in this course. Having learned the mechanics of the Study Bible, the Strong’s Concordance, and the use of other resources, you will be required to write a comprehensive essay entitled, “Foundations of the Christian Faith.” It should be 1,500 words (minimum) (5–7 pages typewritten, 10–14 pages handwritten). The purpose of this assignment is to show that you can concisely explain the fundamentals of Christianity. Include in your paper the concepts of GRACE, REGENERATION, JUSTIFICATION, SIN, and ATONEMENT. Use every resource at your command to research this paper. Your cover sheet, text, and works cited pages will be graded. Your initial outline will be graded as well. TERM PAPER (all 3 must be included in addition to the assignment in the previous paragraph) Skills Paper #1

o Do complete overview of the book of Jonah. Type out your general impressions, collected exclusively from your own reading of the book of Jonah, and find the key terms and list them, including the number of occurrences of each in the book. Create a book survey chart for this book. Finally, do a historical background survey, writing a paragraph each about the author, the date of the book, the audience, and the purpose for which the book was written. Write three or more paragraphs about Nineveh, the city to which Jonah prophesied. You may use outside aids (such as a Bible dictionary, Bible atlas, or Bible commentary) to help you with this exercise.

Skills Paper #2

o Answer the following four questions using only your reading of the English text of the Bible. For each question, observe what you have learned about context, figurative and literal language, and the importance of following normal interpretation. Allow one-half page to one page per question.

1. What is in view in 1 Corinthians 2:9? Give at least two reasons for your answer. What Old Testament passage is the cross reference? What differences and similarities are there in these 2 verses?

2. What is the exact meaning of “Simon himself believed” in Acts 8:13? Use immediate and intermediate contexts. Give at least two reasons for your answer, and take them from contextual evidence (compare Acts 8:21–23). Do a short word study on the Greek “believed.”

3. Does Isaiah 64:8 teach the universal fatherhood of God (the doctrine that God is the Father of all men)? Give two reasons why or why not, taken from immediate and intermediate contexts (compare Isaiah 64:9–12). Remember that only in Isaiah is the phrase “our Father” found in all the Old Testament.

4. Are the prophets in Ephesians 2:20 New Testament prophets, or Old Testament prophets? Confirm your answer with at least two reasons from the immediate

context or the intermediate context, or both (compare Eph. 3:4–6). A Greek word study is appropriate here.

Skills Paper #3 o First, look up Psalm 42 in at least two versions of the Bible. It is the only Psalm that

opens with a simile. Who is the audience (the one to whom the psalmist is speaking) in each paragraph? Note that the audience changes. How does discovering the audience help you to interpret the psalm? What is the purpose of this psalm? Now carefully select and record two topical cross-references for one of the paragraphs in Psalm 42. Type these cross-references in full in your answer. What is your inductive conclusion?

o Second, look up Galatians 5:1–13 in at least two versions. Consider this to be one paragraph. Type the entire paragraph. From your inductive study of the immediately preceding and following paragraphs, show how the intermediate context helps you determine the purpose of this main paragraph. Underline each very important clause or sentence within the paragraph. Color-code the key terms in the paragraph by using a different color to underline each different key term. Do a word study on at least two of the key terms.

o Third, read Matthew 2. Look up Bethlehem, Nazareth, and Egypt in an atlas. How far was each from Jerusalem? Read carefully all that Matthew 2 says about Herod. Try to draw legitimate inferences about his personality and character, and write a paragraph about what you learn.

Now look up Herod in a word concordance. Are there other references to the same Herod? Note that most references do not distinguish one Herod from another.

Look up Herod in a Bible dictionary, and sort out the various Herods mentioned in the New Testament, listing each Herod and the important New Testament persons and events associated with him. Please document your sources in your paper.

State which Old Testament passage is quoted in Matthew 2:18. (You will probably find the reference in a footnote or marginal note in your Bible; if not, check another Bible.) Write the reference passage.

Structure of a Greek Letter (extra credit assignment) 1. Opening

A. Author B. Addressees C. Greeting (e.g. “Grace and peace to you…”) D. Prayer wish or thanksgiving (e.g. “I always thank God for you…”)

2. Body A. Introduction of the subject(s) B. Request(s) for the readers C. Conclusion(s)

3. Closing A. Final greeting and farewell (e.g. “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you…)

Tips for Interpretation 1. Epistles should be read in one sitting like any modern letter. 2. Epistles are not systematic theological treatises. They present some of the author’s theology,

not all of the author’s theology. 3. Epistles are “occasional documents”, meaning that they were prompted by a specific

historical occasion or circumstance (often a behavior or doctrine that needed correcting.) 4. Epistles are “didactic” in nature, meaning that they are written to instruct and to convey

information. Thus, they are logical and argumentative in nature. 5. Epistles should be examined carefully at the paragraph level to see how the parts fit into the

whole. The flow of an argument should be traced between paragraphs. 6. Epistles should be examined according to grammatical and literary structural principles. 7. Epistles were written to a specific audience in a specific historical setting, but they were

relevant and authoritative for all the churches (1 Thessalonians 5:27, Col 4:16, 2 Tim 3:16.) 8. Epistles contain situations, commands, or principles which may be culturally relative or

normative for all Christians of all times. (See the handout on “Cultural Background” for more information.)

9. Try to distinguish between what can be known for certain and what can’t be known for certain.

10. Try to determine the questions the text is trying to answer, not the questions you want the text to answer.

11. Epistles may contain other literary genres embedded in the text, such as proverbs (1 Cor 15:33), creedal statements (1 Tim 3:16), or hymns (Phil 2:6-11).

12. Epistles may use poetic language or figures of speech (e.g. metaphor in Eph 6:10-17).

Assignment Examine the book of Philippians and record which verses correspond to each of the parts of an epistolary letter. Record the range of verses contain the opening, body and closing, and each of the various sub-points that are applicable.
