8 Camden Haven Courier, Wednesday, October 15, 2014 w: www.camdencourier.com.au ACT NOW - PREPARE YOURSELF, FAMILY AND PROPERTY ON THE 18-19 OCTOBER. It’s never too early to get ready for bush fires - but time is running out. Use the Get Ready Weekend on Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 October to make your Bush Fire Survival Plan and prepare your home. Download the digital Get Ready Kit from www.rfs.nsw.gov.au (or contact your local Rural Fire Service) for everything you need to get involved. It includes handy tools such as graphics and photos for social media, invites for your event, posters for printing, and an event guide. GET TOGETHER Work with your neighbours and talk about the fire risk in your area - and what you plan to do if there is a fire. You can even have some fun - like organising a street party or get-together. Ask people to bring a plate or even the number one thing they would grab if there was a bush fire in your neighbourhood. GET PREPARED Getting ready for the bush fire season could be easier than you think. Even the little things can make a difference during a bush fire. Here are the RFS top tips: n Prepare your Bush Fire Survival Plan n Clear leaves, sticks and other things that could burn from your gutters. Gutter guards are a good idea n Prune shrubs and trees so they’re not overhanging the home n Rake up leaves and litter from your proper- ty n Move firewood away from your home n Keep your lawns mowed and your gar- den well maintained n Keep things that can burn like flammable liquids in an enclosed area and not out in the open n Make sure you’ve got a good hose that will reach all corners of your home n If you’ve got a water tank, pool or dam, get a Static Water Supply sign from your local NSW RFS so firefight- ers know there is another water source on the property n Enclose underfloor areas and make sure there are no gaps or broken tiles in the roof - they can let in burn- ing embers. It doesn’t take long, but these simple steps can make all the difference. GET READY The Get Ready Weekend is a good start to being better prepared for bush fires. The next step is action. Download your Bush Fire Survival Plan or get the MyFirePlan app today. Complete it, and discuss it with your family. WHAT IS A BUSHFIRE SURVIVAL PLAN? A Bush Fire Survival Plan can help you make important decisions about what to do during a fire - like when to leave, what to take and what to do with animals. Fact is many people have died during bush fires because they’ve left their decisions to the last moment. Ask yourself these questions: n Do you live within a few streets of the bush? You don’t need to live right on the bush to be at risk from bush fires. Burning embers can travel some distance, setting to fire to homes that are well away from the bush. In fact, the majority of homes destroyed in bush fires are because of what‘s called “ember attack”. n Does your area have a history of bush fires? Think about the area you live in. If fires have happened there before, they will almost certainly happen again. Know the fire risk in your area and prepare for it. n Do you have many trees or shrubs around your home? It’s a fact that a well prepared property is more likely to survive a bush fire. A well prepared property includes trees and shrubs that have been trimmed, and a cleared area where you and firefighters can protect your home if needed. n If you need to leave your home, would you need to travel through bushland? If you need to travel through bushland areas to leave your home, you’re at risk of being caught in a fire. Being caught in the open or in a car are among the most dangerous places during a bush fire. n Is your Bush Fire Survival Plan more than one year old? Even if you’ve made a Plan before, check it and update it if needed. Sit down and talk about your plan with your family. That way, everyone will know what to do if a fire starts. If you answered yes to any of these questions, you need a Bush Fire Survival Plan. Planning to make a plan is not a plan. Making your Bush Fire Survival Plan is probably easier than you think. Sit down and talk about it with your family so everyone knows what to do if a fire happens. 10/50 VEGETATION CLEARING New laws are now in place which help people prepare their homes for bush fires in NSW.
