Dear Parents and Friends,

MOBILE PHONES MOBILE PHONES -- The following is an extract from our Prospectus

CARE OF MONEY AND VALUABLES/MOBILE PHONES

Children should not bring valuables, toys or unnecessary money to school. Children who need to bring money should not leave it in bags outside the classroom or in their desks, but should place it in the care of their class teacher or keep it on their person. All mobile phones should be handed in to the class teacher at the commencement of the school day. The school does not accept any liability for the loss or damage to

the above items if they are brought to school.

This refers to the safekeeping of expensive property and of course ensures that mobile phones are not used by children during the course of the school day. With the increase in mobile phone technologies there is a need to go beyond this and draw up rules that

ensure that our children are not either victims of cyber bullying or instigators of this. Starting immediately, all children are prohibited from using mobile phones on school property other than to use them for contacting their parents to make travel arrangements. This also applies to times when children are engaged in co curricula activities. Theses activities are generally after school hours and children have already retrieved their phones from teachers safekeeping. I believe it is

during this time that children are most vulnerable.

If your child has a mobile phone that you have given them to ensure their safety, please discuss this ruling with them. By way of reminder, Facebook dictates that users must be 13 or

older to start an account.

NOTES:

There are several other social media vehicles that children can be enticed into using. The key to safety in the end is your vigilance as a parent.

Your attention is drawn to the Cyber Playground Parent forum attached to this Informer. Well worth attending as it is in this playground that your children interact.

This is to remind you that the only free bays in the Bolero Street car park are those that don’t have a designated “Staff” sign painted on them. KINDY HEALTH SCREENINGKINDY HEALTH SCREENING

Part of the Nursing Services provided to our school is the screening of our children’s eyesight and hearing. This is carefully recorded and action taken if any deficiencies are identified. The following is a schedule of screening days for our children. Please do ensure that your child attends on the prescribed day as catch

up screening is difficult to organise.

Our school nurse is Registered Nurse Lisa Armstrong. The screening will take place in room 16 (Jacaranda Room ) and will

be conducted by a team of nurses.

BOOKFAIRBOOKFAIR

On Monday, May 19 until Thursday May 22, the P&C will be running our Annual Book Fair in the school Library from which families can purchase books. Commission from all sales comes back in to the school to help us purchase more books for your

6 ways to help you be on top of your parenting game

Everyone wants to be the best parent they can

be, yet it can be confusing knowing just what to focus on. Here

are seven ideas that reflect current trends and needs and will help

you be on top of your parenting game:

1. Give the gift of restraint

At a time when kids receive so much it’s easy to forget that

restraint is a virtue. Just because you can afford to give children

and young people what they want, doesn’t mean you should.

Differentiate between a want and a need, and encourage

restraint, goal setting and saving.

2. Build your developmental knowledge

Lucky you have two eyes, as you need to keep one parenting eye

meeting kids’ current needs and the other on preparing them for

the next stage of development. If starting or leaving secondary

school is a year away then start thinking now about how you can

make sure your child or young person is ready for the next phase

of their life.

3. Reinforce self-regulation

“You waited your turn! Great stuff!”

“Thanks for packing away the toys without being told.” “good on

you for staying in bed when you woke up rather than coming to

our bedroom and waking us up.”

A child’s ability to self-regulate behaviour (like the ability to self-

soothe and self-occupy) is highly underrated, and doesn’t come

naturally to all kids. That’s where consistent parenting using

visual management and behavioural consequences comes in.

4. Practise digital parenting

The most tech-savvy generation ever raised needs digitally-aware

parents. The internet is fun and it’s here to stay, but it can pose

risks for some kids. Digital parenting means providing guidelines

for safety without limiting children’s opportunity to learn and

communicate in the online world. It also requires you to

understand the digital world that your kids inhabit.

5. Develop character strengths in kids

Recent studies (most notably the work of US based Angela

Duckworth) have found that character, not cognitive ability, is the

single most reliable determinant of how a person’s life will turn

out. The traits associated with success include the inclination to

persist at boring or difficult tasks (grit), the ability to delay

gratification (self-control) and the ability to follow through with a

plan (conscientiousness).

6. Practise reciprocity

The best families, like the most meaningful communities, are built

around the principle of reciprocity. “we help each other out and

we treat each other fairly” builds belonging and forges greater

kinship between siblings. Start by getting kids of all ages to help

out at home without being paid. Pick one or two of these ideas, or your own parenting idea, to focus on

over a month. Once you’ve mastered one idea then move on to another, so

that you are constantly improving and being up-to-date as a parent.

COMMUNITY NEWS

P&C UNIFORM SHOP P&C UNIFORM SHOP

Open every Wednesday

morning from 8.45AM to 9.15AM

Hi Everyone,

We have had a very busy time at the P&C, with some wonderful

volunteers and hard work we have also had some great results.

The mothers day stall was a huge success, and judging by the feed back we have received, the children made some wonderful choices. A big thank you to all our fantastic volunteers, we could not have done it without your help! Also a special thank you to Krista Bingham who organised all our volunteers and Krista and

Corrina Fisher who ensured the event ran smoothly!

Another big thank you to Krista, who is stepping down as the Book Club coordinator after a number of years in the role, she has worked tirelessly to ensure our book club ran smoothly and everyone has benefited from her

hard work and dedication. On behalf of the P&C and the entire

school community, thank you for your hard work!

A big welcome to Kelly Samuel who will be taking over the book club role, Kelly has helped out and has hit the ground running

already, and we look forward to her continuing into the future.

A couple of changes on the P&C committee, we have sadly farewelled a couple of committee members and welcome some new ones. Kelly Smith and Stacey Jackson have both resigned, and our P& C is poorer for their leaving. Phil Bennett has officially taken over as our Secretary, with Dimitra Godfrey moving to a committee position, and we welcome Kerry Bartlett

aboard as our newest committee member.

We have some exciting plans for the rest of the year, including multiple disco's, free dress day and other exciting ventures! Planning is also underway for the next Subway day this term!

Thanks for your continued support!

Unitl next time,

Your Aveley P&C Committee
