“Friends,

are you

Are you

ready to

LIVE for

this?”

“I know that by sharing my

and minds. I can change the

world!”- Rebekah Bruesehoff “The biggest

Phenomenal speakers as young as 11 ! !

And so many FUN learning opportunities.

SO proud of our ELCA and our

amazing Hope youth! God's HOPE

changes

everything!

Naming the fear,

anxiety and grief

that weighs us

down, but will

NOT be the last

word, God

breaks our hearts

open to speak

and embody

HOPE to a world

God loves.

Pastor’s Message God's Call, Love, Grace and Hope . . . THIS changes EVERYTHING !!!

The ELCA Youth Gathering was an incredible experience. Picture this: 31,000+ Lutherans from around the country

together for almost 5 days, all focused on worship, faith, service and community. Think of the thousands of hours --

years, actually -- that went into planning and making this happen!! Gathering staff and volunteers worked

tirelessly to make this the best experience for all the attendees. I am SO THANKFUL for our kids that grew so much

and opened their hearts and minds to this beautiful experience that changes everything, and for Hope Lutheran

Church and its members, friends and youth parents that made it financially possible for us to have this experience!

Enjoy these quotes and pictures from Hope's trip to Houston for the ELCA National Youth Gathering. It was an

AMAZING experience!

Dear Friends in Christ,

On vacation, we had the

opportunity to visit many

churches in Germany and

Croatia, packing the “flat

Jesus!” In each village, the

church is at the center and

represents the history, culture

and architecture of that region

from gothic features in the

North to Roman and baroque

churches found more often in the South. We visited

the “Sacred jewel of the Riviera in Porec (Croatia)”, a

UNESCO World Heritage site, the Euphrasian Basilica or

the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Mary, built

in the 4th Century and one of Europe’s most amazing

intact examples of Byzantine art. The wall mosaics are

brilliant masterpieces depicting Christ and the

Apostles and other biblical scenes; there are mosaics

of angels, Istrian martyrs and ancient stone sculptures

that have survived more than 1600 years. The Bible in

one mosaic is opened to the text “Ego sum Lux

vera” (I am the true light). You try to imagine the life

and faith of the early Christians, their dedication to

Christ and commitment to bring others to Christianity.

How incredibly courageous and passionate they

were, praising God and defending their faith, bringing

the “I am the true Light” message to people in the

street. As I sat there quietly, deeply drawn to these

mosaics and the passion reflected in the figures,

people from so many countries quietly prayed, read

and allowed themselves the time to absorb the

impact of these ancient sacred symbols and pictures

of one of the earliest churches. That passion for Christ,

the passion to bring the Word to others is something

that we want to continue to share in 2018 in Temecula

at HOPE. Pastor Linda Vogelgesang reminded us last

Sunday not to keep this beautiful new building and

our location a secret – instead, pass on the news we

are here and invite others to come to Hope. She

shared the statistic that Lutherans invite others to

come to their Lutheran church once every 28 years!

Let’s change those statistics and INVITE our neighbors,

Council News friends, newcomers to our area, and strangers to Hope.

Council news: All promissory notes based on the

contingency funds held by the bank and city were

repaid in full to the members who so generously loaned

us these funds to be used for the building process. We

thank you for your grace, generosity and trust. Council

made the decision this summer to refurbish the sections

of concrete outside our Hope Children’s Center doors

that needed work. To refinish the sidewalks and add

more turf/chips to the play yard is a top priority to keep

the children safe and our play yard inviting.

The “Summer Fun” sessions at the preschool are a

wonderful new program adding a lot of fun. Hope’s

Vacation Bible School has a big sign-up table in front of

the church on Sundays. Help us spread the word for

Hope’s “Shipwrecked” adventure July 23 to July 27.

VBS is followed by the Hope and LRCC Day Camp

August 6 to 10 with the theme “ALL ABOARD!”

What a great theme for all of us: ALL ABOARD to come

to church, ALL ABOARD to help out with summer fun

and activities, and ALL ABOARD as we keep our

commitments for giving and serving and growing in

faith!

We pray that all travelers will be safe and return

refreshed and excited to be back at HOPE. Thank you

to Pastor Sandy and Shirley for traveling with our youth

to Houston. That youth gathering will be a memory for

life for our young people. All who have gone away will

experience the same: It feels great to come home and

to see our church. Thank you to all who have worked

so hard to keep the landscape going; the trees and

plants are blooming and growing and in just this short

time the landscape is filling in. Thank you for helping

out and filling in for others who are vacationing.

Happy 4th of July!

Thank you for your joyful spirit, prayers for our members,

our country and the world.

Lutheran worship that involves band, vocalists and other

musicians at Hope’s 10:15 am Sunday morning worship and other

Adult Bible Study 4:30 pm Sundays August 5, 12 and 19

For teens, parents, and adults. A spiritual experience that will challenge you to identify:

• where you feel closest to God, and

• how you feel most comfortable to pursue a deeper relationship with God

We will have three Sunday evening meetings -- large and small groups -- using Gary

Thomas’ book, Sacred Pathways: Discover Your Soul’s Path to God. We will learn about 9

sacred pathways that Thomas has discovered and validated in his research. Each of us has

one or more preferred pathways. The study has a surprise ending as we convert our

Worship Center into a Christian Labyrinth. Wondering what that is … so was I. Here is a

description.

A labyrinth is an ancient symbol that relates to wholeness. It combines the imagery of

the circle and the spiral into a meandering but purposeful path. The Labyrinth

represents a journey to our own center and back again out into the world.

Labyrinths have long been used as meditation and prayer tools.

Please put Sunday evenings in August on your calendar to join your sisters and brothers on this faith journey.

Meetings will begin at 4:30 pm in the Worship Center. Transformers are encouraged to take part in this study.

Save these dates: Sunday, August 5 Sunday, August 12 Sunday, August 19 and

Monday, August 20 to Noon, Saturday, August 25 will offer times to individually experience the Labyrinth

Small and Large group Bible Study will resume in September.

Note: The book, Sacred Pathways, can be purchased individually through Amazon. An opportunity to order it

through the church will be provided. However, a book is not required or needed to attend the classes.

Women and Justice Social Statement Study

Study the ELCA Draft Social Statement on Women & Justice

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Social statements are

teaching and policy documents that assist members in forming judgments

and in guiding action on social issues. They also set policy for this church,

guide advocacy efforts and support public voice. Social Statements are

developed through an extensive process of deliberation involving the

WHOLE church and must be adopted by a two-thirds vote of an ELCA

church-wide assembly.

The ELCA is preparing a social statement on women and justice to be

considered by the 2019 ELCA Church wide Assembly, as mandated by the

2009 assembly. This “Draft of a Social Statement on Women and Justice” is

an invitation to EVERYONE in the ELCA to join the conversation and

discernment about this concern as people of faith.

What is a draft social statement?

This is a document prepared by the Task Force on Women and Justice: One in Christ. It is the task force’s

draft of this social statement. As such, it is an invitation to discern what this church should teach about

contemporary issues related to sexism and patriarchy in our society.

This draft represents the best thinking of the task force to date. Although not all task force members agree

with every aspect of the draft, it comes to us with unanimous support for sharing with our church for

discussion. Responses from those who have already used the study have been quite positive.

Your response to this draft, along with that of many others across this church, is vital to the process of a

proposed social statement that will be considered by the 2019 Churchwide Assembly. Talking together is

important for our life together as a part of the body of Christ. Your feedback will join the body of responses

that the task force will use to revise this final draft and create a proposed statement by January 2019.

How to participate in the process:

Download OR Pick up a copy of the draft statement

Copies of the draft are in Hope’s Fellowship Hall or download it at: www.ELCA.org/womenandjustice

Study, Discuss AND Comment -- Individually OR As Part of a Study Group • Sign up in Hope’s Fellowship Hall to be part of a group study led by Pr. Sandy and/or Deacon Shirley

• Whether you study the draft as individuals or part of a study group, use the response form at the end of

the statement to share your thoughts on the draft.

Study responses MUST be submitted by September 30, 2018

Here is the link to complete the study questionnaire: bit.ly/womenandjusticedraft

… persevere, being not hearers who

forget but doers who act—they will

be blessed in their doing. James 1:25

Take a lesson from nature – specifically geese:

As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an “up lift” for

the bird following. By flying in a “V” formation, the

whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if

each bird flew alone.

The WELCA planning team is busy, busy flying from

fundraiser to fundraiser to be able to support many

causes. In August, we will have a fellowship potluck to

organize a pillowcase project to support youth in

foster care. In September, the long-promised aloha

luau is scheduled. November will see the revival of

the Christmas Boutique. In December, we will have a

totally new and different Advent Fellowship Tea.

The planning team needs your help. There are always

willing workers for our festivities, but we need more

people to work with us planning and organizing these

activities.

Anne Lamott writes and speaks about subjects that begin with capital letters: Alcoholism, Motherhood,

Jesus. But armed with self-effacing humor – she is laugh-out-loud funny – and ruthless honesty, Lamott

converts her subjects into enchantment. Actually, she writes about what most of us don’t like to think

about. She wrote her first novel for her father, the writer Kenneth Lamott, when he was diagnosed with brain

cancer. She has said that the book was “a present to someone I loved who was going to die.”

In all her novels, Anne Lamott writes about loss – loss of loved ones and loss of personal control. She doesn’t

try to sugarcoat the sadness, frustration and disappointment, but tells her stories with honesty, compassion

and a pureness of voice. She says, “I have a lot of hope and a lot of faith and I struggle to communicate

that.” Anne Lamott does communicate her faith; in her books and in person, she lifts, comforts, and inspires,

all the while keeping us laughing.

Our Mission: Anchored in Christ… to Build and Grow Faith

Our Purpose: To share Jesus’ love by reaching out and welcoming all

Our Vision:

We will trust God in the midst of what makes us anxious,

choose faith instead of fear and

serve mission instead of our own comfort.

Our Guiding Principles:

We are servants of God and members of the Body of Christ.

We value each other.

We practice open and honest communication.

We make decisions that we believe are in the best interest of the

whole congregation and will bring glory to God.
