From the Superintendent...

Hopkins Parents and community,

As December approaches, we know that the school year is well underway. The first parent-teacher conferences have come and gone, end of the marking periods, report cards, fall sports have ended and winter sports have be-gun. Snow is falling and our thoughts are on the holiday seasons – Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year. With that in mind, I would like to consider the many things we have to be thankful for as a school district.

• Our students – Students that not only customarily outperform their counterparts in the area on academic achievement tests, but represent the community as out-standing citizens that give back to the community in so many ways.

• Our staff – Hopkins Public Schools has an outstanding teaching staff that is dedicated to providing the best pos-sible educational experience we can offer. These teachers are supported by a great group of administrators and sup-port staff that all have a “kids first” attitude. Each one of our staff is an important member of our educational team, no matter the role in which they function.

• Our school board – Our school board members are es-sentially volunteers that have dedicated themselves to serving. The decisions they make are with the intention of doing what is best for our students.

• Our parents – The other day I watched parents at Sycamore Elementary dropping off their special cargo to us. I would often see the parent give their child a kiss goodbye. I am thankful they trust us to care for that spe-cial person so dear to them each day of the week. I am also thankful for all of the parents that volunteer in so many different capacities to help our students.

• Our community – It amazes me to see such great support from our community. Many of these community members do not even have students in our schools, but they volun-teer time and resources to support our kids.

As you can see, we have much to be thankful for here at Hopkins Public Schools!

field trip to crane’s orchard

The first grade classes at Hopkins Elementary went on a field trip to Crane’s Orchard on Friday, October 10. They spent the morn-ing navigating through a corn maze, learning about apples, and going on a wagon ride through the orchard to see different types of apples.  Then they went to the L.M. Wise Preserve in Hopkins. They spent time walking on the nature trails, collecting leaves, and looking for animals.

Mr. Pike’s 5th Grade class was chosen as foX 17’s class of the Week!   The web address is: http://fox17online.com/2014/10/24/mr-pikes-5th-grade-class-at-hopkins-elementary-school/

brenda deZeeuw. I am the new Art Teacher at Hopkins Elementary. My husband and I have three children attending elementary, mid-dle school, and high school in our district. As a family, we enjoy riding bikes, spend-ing time at the lake, and 4-H

activities.  We have a small “petting zoo” including ponies, sheep, chickens, turkeys, a rabbit, a dog, and a cat; and to top it off, we also have a donkey!  Of course, I enjoy making art.  I try to spend time painting each week.  I am so excited to share time creating art work with 1st and 2nd grade students!

kirsten Vandermeulen. This is my first year teach-ing and I am so proud to be part of Hopkins Public Schools! Previously, I have student taught through the University of Toledo (OH) in Kindergarten, and have been a Kindergarten para-

pro. My husband and I have lived in Hudsonville for almost a year. We are both native Michigan-ders, but not from West Michigan; we are loving it! We enjoy playing tennis, being on the lake, watching movies, and spending time with family and friends. Thank you for such a warm welcome into your school district!

We would like to send a big thank you to all the community members who volunteered as presenters. Their participation is the key to making this event so valuable for our students.

Middle school robotics team members working on their robot

Hopkins robotics team updateThe FIRST Robotics team at Hopkins Public Schools is very busy. The middle school season is in full swing. The high school team is mentoring the two middle school teams. The two teams are putting the finishing touches on their robots and getting ready to compete Dec 6th and Dec 13th. The first event is at Allendale Middle school and the second is at Pinewood Middle school in Kentwood. Both events are FREE to the public. Come out and support the teams.

The high school team recently competed in two off season events. On Sept 20th the team placed second out of 40 teams at Kettering University. On Oct 25th the team took first place at the West Michigan Robotics Invitational. This is the 3rd time in 4 years we have won this event.

The 2015 High School season is quickly approaching. The official kickoff for 2015 is January 3rd, 2015. We will be holding an information meeting for anyone interested in joining the Robotics team. This meeting is open to new members and parents to learn more about the team. The meeting is Dec 9th at 7 pm in the Robotics classroom. This is on the lower level of the high school academic wing (East side)

One Hopkins Vocal Music student, Amber Bliek, auditioned this year to be part of the 2014-15 Michigan School Vo-cal Music Association (MSVMA) Regional Honors Choir. Amber Bliek was accepted into the 2014-15 MSVMA Regional Hon-ors Choir and will be performing on Sat-urday, December 6th  at Western Mich-igan University with around 150 other students from around the state. Students that attend that Regional Honors Choir Day will also have the opportunity to audition to be part of this year’s MSVMA State Honors Choir. Congratulations to Amber, and good luck!

For the first time ever, MSVMA held their Regional Honors Choir auditions via an online file submission format, versus the traditional face-to-face individual auditions that were typically held at various audition sites around the state.

ffA Members receive Honors at national ffA conventionThirteen members recently attended the National FFA Conven-tion in Louisville, KY. Six members received their American De-gree which is the highest degree awarded by the FFA.  Those members in attendance were Alan Green, Trevor Collier, Katie Collier, and Mandie Collier. Ellie Karweik and Elizabeth Miller also received their American Degrees, but were unable to attend. Alan Green, past Hopkins FFA President, also had the honor of representing MI as the national officer candidate.  He spent the week along with 41 other individuals from across the country in intense interviews with a nominating committee, giving stand and delivers, and workshop facilitations. He made it all the way to the final cut but was not selected as one of the six to serve as an officer this year. He learned a lot from the experience and plans to run again next year. This was a huge honor and our en-tire chapter is very proud of him! While at the convention, mem-bers also attended sessions, contests, tours, heard motivational speakers, and visited with hundreds of businesses and colleges all related to the agriculture field.

“JV football comes together to win six straight”It was a bit of a rough start for the JV football team this fall. After dropping the first three games and having multiple injuries and obstacles to overcome, the guys pulled together and were able to win all six remaining games, including a conference title. The JV’s have not lost a conference game since 2007. In the last six games they outscored their opponents 240-110. They learned many valuable lessons this season that will carry on into the future and life beyond football. Great job guys! Go Vikings!

Gridiron Giving GameWhen Vikings hear a call for help they roll out in force and meet challenges head on! Recently such a call was heard by the high school’s Student Council and in grand style your Mighty Vikings answered.

Partnered with our friends from Wendy’s, and Helen Devos, the Vikings held the Gridiron Giving Game early in October. Donations where gathered at the home game against Calvin Christian, along with “Hat Day” events held at Hopkins El., Sycamore El., and the High School. The Vikings raised over $800.00 to benefit the Helen Devos Children’s Hospital. 100% of those funds go directly to assist patients and families currently receiving care and treatment at the hospital.

Thank you Vikings one and all!Never Hide Your Viking Pride . . .

sycamore first Graders enjoy Pure

MichiganSycamore First graders traveled to Hastings and Cotant’s Farm Market for some fall fun in October.  They first were shown how apples are ground and then pressed into cider. They enjoyed a wagon ride through the pumpkin field and apple orchard where students picked their own apples.  Tractor races, a zip line which ended in a pile of straw, obstacle course, spooky straw maze and a big slide in a straw mow were enjoyed by all. Everyone enjoyed warm donuts and fresh apple ci-der before heading back to school!

Megan (Pavlak) roxburyI graduated from Hopkins High

School in 1992. While I enjoyed all of my classes and teachers at Hopkins, my fa-vorite teacher was Mr. Crowe. He taught all the sciences: biology, physics and chem-istry. He was an extremely tough teacher who expected a lot from his students but I’ll never forget tutoring half of my college dormitory freshman year from his physics notes. He really prepared me for a degree that relied heavily on the sciences. I at-tended Grand Valley State University for the following six years earning a Bachelor of Health Sciences and a Masters of Physical Therapy. I currently practice as a physical therapist at Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo. I rotate around the hospi-tal seeing all kinds of patients, but for 8 out of the 12 months of a year, you can find me in the burn and trauma unit. I specialize in treating very ill patients who have been in car accidents, burned, fallen from heights, or injured severely in any accident. My job is to start their re-habilitation process, often while they are still on breathing machines. I absolutely love my chosen career and I love helping to give people back their independence.

I currently live in Dorr with my two daughters Avery (age 11) and Peyton (al-most 9) and Avery’s 8 week old yellow lab puppy, Farley (naughty but EXTREMELY cute). Even though we live in Dorr, my daughters currently attend Hopkins Elementary and love it. They are both very sociable, have great senses of humor and make me a better person in the world.

I enjoy many things in life and am constantly seeking new adventures and new learning opportunities. I love to travel both with my daughters and with friends and especially to National Parks.

I love to run and after HS,   I completed many long distance races, including a full 26.2 mile marathon. I   don’t get the op-portunity to sail much anymore but I did complete a sailing certification and love getting out on the water. I love to kayak, hike, camp and anything that involves being outdoors. I love spending time with my daughters and watching them com-pete in swimming and softball.  I also love to write and hope to one day publish a book. I also love to cook, play board games with my girls, scrapbook and listen to live music. I am an avid Detroit Tigers fan but when it comes to football my heart lies in Colorado with the Broncos. My daughter is named Peyton for a reason :) I love to root for MSU in any sport, and I gener-ally take a few days off during March Madness to watch my bracket fall apart.

My biggest role model in HS was

Sherlene Kolberg who taught me at the Vo-Tech Center. She showed me that I could do anything I put my mind to. She also encouraged me to ditch self-imposed limits. I loved the small town I grew up in but I needed to know there was a gigan-tic world out there to explore and learn from and she facilitated that. My biggest role model now is an author named Mark Nepo, who I had the honor of studying under for 2 years. Mark’s work centers around living an authentic life in which we bring our full self to the world in order to fulfill our full purpose in life.

My favorite HS memory is a tie be-tween going undefeated for an entire sea-son of softball (I won’t lie, winning is fun) and winning a speech contest through the Vo-Tech and getting to compete at the National level in Washington DC. I had never left Michigan before I won that trip and it was such an amazing experience for me.

If I have any advice for cur-rent Hopkins Students it would be to not waste the advantage of coming from a small town while not letting it limit you. Coming from a small town and small school gives you many opportunities to work closely with teachers and counselors to achieve your goals. You have unique op-portunities for one-on-one attention and the teachers know your name. You are not just a face in the crowd. Sometimes, how-ever, coming from a small school makes students believe they don’t have what it takes to be successful in college and in the larger world. This simply couldn’t be further from the truth. Always follow your intuition, dream as big as you can, and never fear failure. There really is no reward for holding back.

ben brennerEmployed at Pine Rest Chris-

tian Mental Health Services for 16 years as a Staff Development Man-ager

Attended Hopkins Public Schools, Kellogg Community Col-lege and Ferris State University

I am married and have three daughters. My wife is Stacy and my daughter’s names are Grace, Olivia and Claire.

I have been in the school dis-trict for 35 years

I ran for a school board position because decisions that are made by the school board have a direct impact on my children’s education and I want to be part of that deci-sion making process. In addition, I believe that Hopkins has an incred-ible school system, and I want to help assist in keeping it that way. Lastly, I am very proud of the school system our community has, and I want to see it continue to thrive.

I serve on many professional committees which include the Mich-igan Federation for Children and Families, Michigan Association for Behavioral Health, Mercy Health (St. Mary’s) Leadership Academy as well as the Hopkins Village Council. All of these are important, but serv-ing on the Hopkins School Board is especially meaningful to me. My family is paramount in my life, and anything I can do to help with my children’s future is important to me. I look forward to the opportunity to serve my community and my kids.

John MyersI am a self employed contractor. I graduated from

Hopkins High School and have a Construction Admin-istration Certificate from Ferris State University.

My family consists of my wife of 22 years Janine, and 3 children; Nicholas, Jacob and Lauren.

I enjoy hunting, woodworking, and baseball.I re-ran for a school board position because I

would like to continue the work that so many good people before me have done as members of the school board.

I enjoy being involved in local government. These are difficult times financially for our school. I believe my experience will be helpful moving forward.

Jay GibsonI have been a  Police Of-

ficer for the City of Allegan for 17 years.  I am our Union President, Field Training Of-ficer, and am a team leader on the Allegan County SWAT Team.

I attended Hopkins Elementary until the 5th grade,  living in the  Gorden’s Funeral Home in town during that time.  We then moved to Allegan where I graduated High School in 1993.  I at-tended Ferris State Univer-sity from 1993-97, earning a Bachelor of Science  Degree in Criminal Justice.  I re-turned to the Grand Rapids Campus of Ferris  State Uni-versity  from 2009-11 where I earned a Master of Science Degree in Criminal Justice Administration.

I am married to my wife Alexis, who works in the Hu-man Resources Department at Perrigo, and I have two boys.  Noah is 4 and attends the St. Stan’s pre-school program.  AJ

(Alexander John) is 1 and into everything he can reach.

We moved into the school district in 2006, living in the Secluded Acres subdivision near 30th St. and 138th Ave. until 2012.  We moved into our current home on 132nd Ave., north of town, in January 2012.  The school district was the driving force behind the purchase of both homes which stem from my fond memories and experiences in the school

system. My wife and kids are

where my day starts and ends.  I enjoy being physically active, following all Detroit pro sports teams and may be a bit fanat-ical about University of Mich-igan sports.  I can’t wait to follow Noah and AJ in what-ever endeavors they become involved with here in Hopkins.

I was happy to see that there were 5 candidates to ap-ply for the 3 open school board

seats.  Some area jurisdictions do not have that luxury.  A lot of experience is lost with Dawn and Anita stepping down, but the voters will be blessed with several  candidates to choose from.  I think any candidate elected who is not an incum-bent will certainly have a learning curve.   A 6 year term is a big commitment, but I cer-tainly did my due diligence be-fore submitting the paperwork to the county clerk. I talked to my uncle, Steve VanderVeen, who served on the Allegan school board for many years, Dawn Buist, and many others before committing myself.   I think my professional/life experience background illus-trates that I believe in contin-ued education.  I have to use problem solving skills often, and am required to make deci-sions that can often be scruti-nized.  I have never regretted making the right decision over what may have been the more popular one.  Go Vikings!
