Dear Parents,

The month of March is highlighted by the registration and course selection process for the 2014-2015

school year. Our 7th grade students will be visited by our counselor Ms. Nahigian during the week of

March 10th to distribute the registration packets and to explain the process. It is important that

these packets are reviewed and the desired electives are indicated. The registration forms must be

returned by Friday, March 21st. Please indicate your choices carefully as this is what we will refer to

when making next year’s schedule.

The 8th grade students will be visited by the counselors and administrators from Irvington High

School on March 7th in their Science classes and registration materials will be handed out. In the

evening of Thursday, March 13th, Irvington is hosting a 9th grade orientation for incoming students.

The third quarter ends on April 1st. Please continue to monitor your student’s progress using School

Loop. As spring begins and daylight extends into the evening, some students find it difficult to

discipline themselves to complete assignments. Eighth grade students with more than one F grade on

their third quarter report cards will not be allowed to attend the end of the year Great America

activity. Students must also not have more than one F grade to participate in Promotion Ceremony or

8th Grade Party.

UPDATES FROM OUR ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL: Town Hall Meeting: On February 13th, all students attended a Town Hall meeting during their PE class. Seventh grade students were reminded about proper school conduct. Eighth grade students were reminded about proper school conduct and eligibility requirements for the end of year activities, which include the Great America Award Trip, Promotion and the Promotion Party. We continue to have problems with cell phone use, loss and theft. Please remind your child of the following: Cell phones are allowed at school (bring at your own risk) but not to be used until after school. Texting during school hours is not allowed. Phones must be off and out of sight. Cell phones will be confiscated if seen or heard during school hours. Parents may pick up confiscated phones from me after 2:30 PM. If you need to contact your child, please call the office at 656-4000. Another concern that was brought to my attention by the student body and parent community is the conversations between students via Email, text messaging, cell phone conversations and Myspace/Facebook (blogs). I know it is impossible to supervise all your children’s communication; however, please review with them what is being sent and what communications are being received. My biggest concern is with Facebook and other online accounts. It has come to my attention that many inappropriate messages and pictures are being posted on the Internet, which is jeopardizing the safety and integrity of our students. Please discuss the importance of Internet anonymity and the possible danger associated with inappropriate use. For more details or if you have questions or concerns, please contact me. Lastly, but most certainly not of least importance, e-cigarettes and electronic hookas or vapor pens have made their way into our schools. Please take some time to speak to your child/children about these "cigarettes." Students often think that because they are electronic that they are 1. Safe to "smoke" and 2. OK to have at school. Most important is that these devices are not healthy. E-cigarettes and other smoking devices are not allowed on school campuses and students who use them or have them in their possession will be disciplined. Ms. Renoir, Assistant Principal (510) 656-4000 ext. 48110

PROMOTION PARTY JUNE 6, & PROMOTION CEREMONY: JUNE 11, Our PTSA will sponsor a ceremony for students who will be promoted to the ninth grade next year. The party is also a PTSA function. These events are not intended to compete with the high school graduation or senior year end

celebration. The dress should be appropriate to the age level. Tuxedos and strapless gowns will not be allowed nor will limousines be permitted. In the past when these restrictions were not enforced, a number of students were discouraged from attending because they could not afford such luxuries. We want all students to attend. Signed parent/guardian permission slips will be required for both events.

AATTTTEENNTTIIOONN PPAARREENNTTSS:: We DO NOT interrupt classrooms when forgotten lunches, books, homework, projects, etc. are brought in for students. Students are informed that when they forget ANYTHING, they must check the office during class passing. You may bring items to the office and leave them on the front office counter. Please have a discussion with your child to let them know that if they have forgotten anything, he/she should check in the office to see if you have brought that item in. Food is the only item that will be disposed of at the end of the day. Thank you!

Keeping Horner Healthy: Parents, please note, students who are ill must meet these F.U.S.D. standards before they are allowed to return to school. If a student has any of the following symptoms, we do request that you keep your student home for the time requested by our district policy. Temperature of 100° F or higher. Healthy Schools Act The Healthy Schools Act of 2000 requires that all schools provide parents or guardians of students with annual written notification of planned pesticide use on school sites. FUSD has been refining its Pest Management program to insure the safest possible school environment. Pesticides are applied by trained specialists, generally on weekends with no wide area spraying. One exception is the treatment of yellow jackets or wasps, which may be requested on an emergency basis, and involves low pressure injection of chemicals into underground nests. Chemicals used by FUSD trained specialists are the least toxic and most rapidly biodegradable products on the market. Household pesticides available at stores are generally more potent. Chemicals used for emergency treatments are harmless within a few minutes of application. Fields and school grounds that are to be treated in the normal rotation of maintenance work will be posted with signs the day before treatment. The signs will be left up for three (3) days after treatment. If you or your student have been attending schools or using school facilities until now without having any problems, you should have no cause for concern. There are no anticipated changes in procedures. The following pesticides may be used during the school year.

Name of Pesticide Active Ingredient(s)

CB-80 Pyrethrins, Piperonyl Butoxide

STAR TESTING Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) will start at Horner on May 5. These tests are part of the California Standards Tests set by the State Board of Education.

Statewide Standardized Testing and Reporting Program

[Parent Notification to Include in School Newsletters in February or March, 2014]

Statewide Standardized Testing This spring, Fremont Unified School District students will participate in the two kinds of California state testing: Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) and Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) Field Testing. STAR (Standardized Testing and Reporting) SCIENCE: Students in grades 5, 8, and 10 will take tests aligned with the science content standards. The district will administer these tests to students in grades 5 and 8 between May 5

th and May 16

th. Students in

grade 10 will test between April 9th

and 17th

. GRADE 11 EARLY ASSESSMENT PROGRAM (EAP) – ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS AND MATH

Page 10: HORNER JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL - Fremont Unified School · PDF fileOrientation for incoming 7th grade students is at Horner Junior High School on Wednesday, March 19, ... 8th Grade Reward

Grade 11 students will participate in the Early Assessment Program (EAP) to assess their readiness for college-level English and math. All grade 11 students will take the EAP Writing assessment in March, and in April, the STAR test in English Language Arts. In addition, those grade 11 students either currently enrolled in Intermediate Algebra or Algebra II, or those having already completed the three courses Algebra I, Geometry, and Intermediate Algebra or Algebra II, will take the STAR test in Algebra II or Summative Math. Students who, on the basis of their EAP results, demonstrate proficiency for college-level coursework are exempt from taking the California State University (CSU)’s and participating California Community College (CCC)’s placement tests for English and math. These students move directly into college-level classes upon enrollment. SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS: Some special education students will be taking the California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA) test between April 9

th and May 14

th. These include students in

grades 2 through 11 with the most significant disabilities and who are generally not working toward a regular high school diploma. Students in grades 5, 8 or 10 may take the California Modified Assessment version in science as noted in a students’ IEP instead of the regular STAR science assessment. Parents wishing to know more about the STAR CMA program should contact the principal. Testing results for all STAR assessments will be reported by the State Department of Education on the Internet late summer by state, county, district, school, and grade level (but not individual class or student) at the following website address: www.cde.ca.gov. Results will also be sent to districts at that time, then mailed to parents. If a parent wishes their child to be excluded from all or part of the test(s), they may submit a written request to their school principal. SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) The Smarter Balanced Field Test will take place between April 7

th and June 6

th. Students in grades 3

through 8 and grade 11 (Mission High School only) will be assessed via computer in English-language arts and mathematics content aligned with the Common Core State Standards. Purpose and Benefits of the Field Test A field test is not designed to be a valid and reliable measure of student achievement; rather, it is designed to help the test developers evaluate whether the tests, individual items, and the technology platform work as intended before the first operational administration, planned for spring 2015. The spring 2014 Field Test will be fully computer-based. Participation in the Field Test will give students, teachers, administrators, and local educational agencies valuable exposure to the future assessment system:

Students will gain hands-on experience with the functionality of innovative technology-enhanced

items and newly designed performance tasks with related classroom activities.

Teachers and administrators will gain valuable exposure to administration logistics to better prepare

for smooth and successful participation in the operational assessments, which will begin in the

2014–15 school year.

Local educational agencies will benefit from knowing where technology gaps may exist so they can

fully prepare for the operational assessments.

There will be accessibility and accommodations available for applicable students.

Please note that because the Field Test is a test of the assessments themselves, and the testing procedures, test scores will not be published and parents will not receive any information regarding their students’ performance on the Field Test. If a parent wishes their child to be excluded from all or part of the test, they may submit a written request to their school principal. Families wishing to access SBAC practice tests can do so by logging on to: https://sbacpt.tds.airast.org/student/ Testing Preparation

Page 11: HORNER JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL - Fremont Unified School · PDF fileOrientation for incoming 7th grade students is at Horner Junior High School on Wednesday, March 19, ... 8th Grade Reward

It is important that schools and parents work together to ensure that students will be as well prepared as possible for these assessments. Schools are addressing “test prep” skills, standards aligned curriculum, are projecting a positive attitude toward the testing programs, and teaching the curriculum addressed in each grade level test. Parents can help by making sure that students do that following:

1. Be at school. Please avoid scheduling medical and other appointments, which would have your child away

from class during this time.

2. Get plenty of sleep. A well-rested child will perform better.

3. Eat a nutritious breakfast. Well-fed “brain cells” function best.

4. Be positive and do not apply too much pressure. Students will perform better if they feel self-confident

and supported by their families and schools. They need to know that we feel they CAN do well.
