SENTRY® Hand Portable Fire Extinguishers

In hospitals and medical centers, people withimpaired health can be exposed to fireextinguishing agents. And, in fact, someextinguishing agents may cause cardiacsensitization. Therefore, extra precautions shouldbe taken when selecting fire suppression systemsfor hospitals or medical centers. Only the safestClean Agent Fire Suppression Systems shouldbe considered.

Medical centers have specialconcerns for fire safety

◆ INERGEN agent is a blend of threenaturally-occurring inert gases. It does notdecompose in a fire. Therefore, there are noconcerns about the production of toxic gases.

◆ An extensive collection of published journalarticles and scientific reports from independentinternationally recognized medical and researchspecialists has confirmed that an INERGENatmosphere is safe. Testing has been performed atand beyond normal system design concentrationsto produce a wide safety margin.

◆ INERGEN Fire Suppression Systems have beeninstalled in hospitals and medical centersworldwide. Fires have been successfullyextinguished by INERGEN systems with onlyminor fire damage to the hardware involved.

◆ Innovative and flexible system designs arepossible with INERGEN systems. The use ofselector valves can provide tremendous savingsby reducing the installed cost of an INERGENsystem. Agent storage cylinders can be located inmechanical or storage areas and not take upvaluable space in data centers or diagnostic rooms.

◆ Ansul offers a unique Evergreen DischargeWarranty. Basically, the warranty states thatAnsul will pay for the cost of INERGEN agentreplacement regardless of the cause of discharge(except commissioning discharge tests) for aperiod of 10 years. Ask for Warranty detailsand limitations.

◆ Ansul recommends the installation of SENTRYportable fire extinguishers in hospitals andmedical centers. These extinguishers meet orexceed the standards set forth by the authorityhaving jurisdiction to ensure the highest levels oflife safety and property protection.

The Ansul solution

Agent selection is vital.Halon 1301 and first generationhalocarbon replacement agents decomposewhen they contact flame producing toxicgases such as Hydrogen Fluoride (HF).Third-party information from small, intermediate, and large-scale independenttesting facilities should be evaluated foran unbiased view of the issue. However,NIOSH has established 30 parts per million(PPM) of HF as the maximum legalexposure level. The American IndustrialHygiene Association "EmergencyResponse Planning Guide" identifies 50PPM of HF as a level that could be fatal tohighly susceptible people and generallythe level requires evacuation of allindividuals in the vicinity.

NOTE: This drawing is conceptual in nature. The fire suppressionsystem depicted constitutes typical hardware requirements. The finalsystem design must consider other factors that are only determinedthrough a pre-installation in-depth analysis of all likely areas of probable fire incident.

Selector Valveand Piping Arrangement

Nozzles andManifold Orifice

DevicesINERGEN agent is stored as a gasmixture in DOT approved cylinders.INERGEN cylinders can be installedeither vertically or horizontally – andare available in various sizes – allowingthe system design engineer to store theproper amount of agent in the fewestnumber of cylinders to save space andinstallation costs.

Fire detection/suppression system

operation1 Detectors sense fire in the protected areaand electronically signal the AUTOPULSEcontrol unit.

2 The AUTOPULSE control unit thentriggers a series of actions… activatesalarms – shuts down ventilation – and, after the prescribed time delay period, energizes the electric actuator on theINERGEN cylinder valve.

3 The cylinder valve opens allowingINERGEN agent to escape from the storagecylinder(s) into the distribution pipingnetwork.

4 INERGEN agent discharges through thenozzles where it quickly floods theprotected area to suppress the fire.

Installation and serviceINERGEN fire suppression systems areinstalled, maintained, and serviced by aworldwide network of Ansul authorizedfire equipment distributors who are factorytrained and fully equipped to keep yoursystems fire-ready.

Distribution pipingdownstream of the manifold orifice device must be a minimum of Schedule 40.F. The system manifold up to the manifold orifice device must be constructed of Schedule 80piping and 2000 lb. or 3000 lb. forged steel fittings.G. All piping shall comply with NFPA 2001: Standard on Clean Agent Fire Extinguishing Systems.H. Piping shall be installed in accordance with good commercial practice to the appropriatecodes, securely supported with UL Listed hangers and arranged with close attention to thedesign layout since deviations may alter the design flow performance as calculated.I. Piping shall be bracketed within 12" (300 mm) of all discharge nozzles.J. All piping shall be reamed, blown clear and swabbed with appropriate cleaner to removemill varnish and cutting oils before assembly.K. Multi-outlet fittings, other than tees, shall not be permitted.L. Assembly of all joints shall conform to the appropriate standards.
