Social Tourism: It represents a particular form of tourism demand, more focused on the territory, ambient, culture heritage and especially as reason of socialisation.

Glossary of the “Social Tourism”

Accessible Tourism: It refers to the set of "services and facilities” (such as physical environment, transportation, information, communication) directed to all, and especially to people with special access needs (i.e. people with permanent or temporary disabilities).

Active Tourism: It’s focused on spend an holidays in contact with the people, tradition and lifestyle of a territory. (i.e. experience within a farm with direct contact with the animals, or to see an artisan at work).

Responsible and eco-friendly Tourism: It aims to deliver ‘better places to live in and to visit’ – with the emphasis firstly on creating better places for local people, and secondly for tourists.

Some statistics about Tourism and Social Tourism in Europe *

The tourism sector at EU level is composed by 1.8 million of enterprises, mainly of small and medium size (SMEs). It contributes to 5% of GDP and 5,2% of the total employment of the active population (it corresponds to about 9.7 million people).

If we consider the strict connection with other economy sectors, it represents the 10% of GDP and 12% of total employment.

Tourism is the 3rd branch of socio-economic activities of the Union.

The European Union is the first tourist destination in the world.

Country: Italy

Summary: The holiday packages are implemented paying attention to tourist needs and encouraging environment sustainability, local tradition and cultural heritage. The tourist is invited to participate in local and traditional rituals in an active way/approach breaking with the classic idea of ‘holiday packages’ and emphasizing on his emotional experience through the interaction and the relationship with local citizens.

Funded by: a tourism company (SME) aiming at promoting rural experience in Marche region. The company was founded in 2014 by two young professionals specialized in Organizational Psychology and marketing area.

Example of Social Innovation: a new Welfare?

1 – Practices: Innovation Voucher (example of Public Procurement launched by Marche Regional Government which founded Innovative SMEs)

2 – Stakeholders: COOSS is investigating how the list of interested subjects is changing in the last years: Stakeholders for social innovation are PAs, SMEs profit, NGOs, and new subjects as “gatekeepers” and “self-help” solutions, both based on the concepts of Mutual help and Civil Society active participation.

3 – Social Services: a key innovation is the slow but progressive introduction of Digital Solutions to the traditional standards of care provision: i.e. PRONTO COOSSAt experimental level COOSS is registering the involvement of ICT-based and Technological supports in the traditional human-based caring activities: i.e. AAL and H2020 projects.
