House of Ruth Maryland Changing Attitudes. Saving Lives. Winter 2016
Feeling(s) Connected José was 10 years old when he came to House of Ruth Maryland’s Emergency
Shelter. His mom was nearly killed by her abuser, but managed to escape, with José and his little sister Isabella. José stayed in his home school, despite living in the shelter, but was being bullied at school. Some of the aggressors at his school knew he was living in the shelter and tormented him mercilessly. They would bother him during class, before school and after school. He didn’t tell his Mom, because he was the “man of their family now” and he knew she had bigger troubles to deal with and didn’t want to worry her. Continued on page 2

José’s mom had a job, so José and Isabella were in the Emergency Shelter’s
afterschool program. Each day, children in the afterschool program complete a
“feelings chart” where they can share if they are angry, happy, sad, anxious, calm,
or scared, and answer a couple of quick, “yes or no” statements about their day.
Statements include “I need help to feel better”, “I need a little time alone”,
“I need to talk to someone”, “I had a problem at school today” and concludes
with “I plan on being successful today, regardless of my feelings”. It was through
this chart that José began to share about the bullying at school.
“The kids in our shelter are facing tremendous challenges at home and then
go to school and have to navigate the social and emotional stressors that come
with school life,” said Pia DiSciullo May, Clinical Services Manager at House of
Ruth Maryland. “It can be complex for a child with a healthy home life, and that
complexity is multiplied when a child is living in shelter and has experienced
significant trauma at home,” said May.
Creating a safe and supportive classroom is a priority in the afterschool program
at House of Ruth Maryland. Research has demonstrated that children who reported
feeling a connectedness through the presence of a caring adult in school and
afterschool programs were more likely to engage in healthy, safe behaviors such
as participating in activities, having fun with friends, helping the teacher and less
likely to have negative emotional outbursts and get into fights with other children.
The “feelings chart” helps House of Ruth Maryland’s teachers and counselors
gauge the emotional temperature of our children, like José, when they come in
from school, determine how they are feeling, and connect them with adult support
if they identify that is what they need. This adult support may be some one-on-one
time with a teacher or with the Child & Family Therapist if appropriate, or simply
giving a child some alone time to decompress after a long day at school. “This
chart,” said May, “helps children put their feelings into words and teaches them
that it is okay to ask for help.”
Sometimes, the problems the children share are complicated, like José’s story
and require time with a counselor, conversations with parents, school officials or
other actions. Sometimes, it’s much simpler. One young girl came in and indicated
that she was angry and sad and answered “yes” to all of the feelings chart
statements. After a quick conversation, it was discovered that she had had a bad
day – she lost her jacket, her hair got wet and she got into an argument with a
classmate at school. A teacher talked with her about her feelings and what had
happened and worked with her on some better ways to handle the situation.
The next day, she came back and indicated that she was “calm” and “happy”.
“Her feelings were validated,” said May, “Children respond when they know that
adults are listening and acting based on what the children are telling them.”
The greatest indicator of how important this form of expression is to the children?
“They ask for the feelings charts if they aren’t on the table when they come in
from school!” said May. “They want to tell us about their day and are now actively
asking for help when they need it.”

Services Manager at House of Ruth Maryland, at [email protected].

Letter from the Executive Director Dear Friends,
During this time of year, children are often the center of attention and we wonder at the magic of the holidays, as seen through their eyes. For the children at House of Ruth Maryland, however, this season of celebrations can be especially difficult. They may be away from their homes, their friends, their family. They may be watching their mother heal after a violent beating at the hands of their father. They may be scared for what tomorrow could bring. For these children, the innocence of youth is gone – along with the magic.
In our work we see firsthand what witnessing violence in their homes does to children, and study after study confirms the impact. Physical effects, such as high blood pressure, obesity and sleep difficulties; delays in cognitive skills development and attention difficulties; and social and behavioral problems are just some of the struggles traumatized children face.
How do we help these most vulnerable of victims? Age appropriate services are available for all children in our programs. In our
state-licensed childcare center, counselors and teachers work with children from infancy through preschool on creating healthy responses to interaction. Building trust in adults, through play therapy and through meeting basic needs, helps children to process the trauma they’ve experienced.
For school-age children, we have the opportunity to receive clues from them about what they’re feeling, and how we may be able to help. The simple “feelings chart” highlighted in our cover story makes it easy for kids to let us know what’s going on inside of them. Teachers and counselors have a quick way to assess, daily, the emotional state of the child and work with them to provide guidance, alone time, or other interventions to process their day and the trauma. This type of i ndividualized response is critical in helping them to find their voice, empowering them to seek help when they need it.
Teenagers are not only dealing with the violence they’ve witnessed, but are also forming their own personal relationships. Every day brings new decisions for them to make as they move closer to being an adult, and the impact of these decisions can have lasting effects on not only their own lives, but the people around them. We provide individual counseling and group counseling to help build coping mechanisms and healthy emotional responses to daily life.
While all these programs are helping to meet the emotional and physical needs of the children we serve, we are grateful to have you, our community, working next to us to bring some joy to the holiday season. Through our annual Adopt A Family effort clients are “adopted” by individuals and groups of people who receive an anonymous profile of the family they’re matched with – ages, sex and clothes sizes of the children and ideas from a wish list of what the family wants. And then the shopping begins! Each year over 300 of our client families, which are 1,000 individuals, receive holiday presents from people they will never meet, but who care about them. It’s you who adds the magic.
Together, our services and your support bring that special spirit of the season to families and children who have been through so much. I thank you for joining us in this work of rebuilding the lives of women and children, and helping them to have a life that is safe and free of fear.
Wishing you and the people you care about a joyous holiday season,
Sincerely,
Sandi Timmins, Executive Director

Man Up Recap
Many community leaders gathered
round as Steve Smith, Sr., shared his
story at the recent Man Up event
benefitting House of Ruth Maryland.
He told of watching his mother get
punched in the face, when he was only
5 years old and the helpless feeling
that left him with. He then spent some
time talking about how men need to
be gentle – with their partners, their
children and their community – an
unexpected message from an NFL star.
In addition to Mr. Smith, several area
collegiate coaches joined us to show
the commitment of their programs
and their personal commitment to
stopping intimate partner violence
in our youth and our communities.
We thank the following coaches for
joining us to take a stand: John Tillman,
University of Maryland Men’s Lacrosse;
Cathy Reese, University of Maryland
Women’s Lacrosse; Dave Pietramala,
Johns Hopkins University Men’s
Lacrosse; Janine Tucker, Johns Hopkins
University Women’s Lacrosse; Charley
Toomey, Loyola University Men’s
Lacrosse; Jen Adams, Loyola University
Women’s Lacrosse; G. G. Smith, Loyola
University Men’s Basketball; Shawn
Nadelen, Towson University Men’s
Lacrosse and Sonia LaMonica, Towson
University Women’s Lacrosse.
Each year, Man Up raises awareness
of the issue of intimate partner violence
and works with leading men and
women in our community to learn
more about what to do when they
encounter intimate partner violence
and how to work to end violence in
our community.

The Measure of SuccessHouse of Ruth Maryland was recently awarded a Measuring Success Outcomes
grant through the Victims of Crime Act funding. The issue – how to measure successful outcomes for intimate partner violence (IPV) service providers. Each provider serves a unique population and where one intervention may work well, another may not. Research has repeatedly shown that providers will be successful when services are tailored to the population being served – rural vs. urban, etc. But what outcomes indicate success?
One promising model is the Measuring Success Outcomes Model developed by House of Ruth Maryland (HRM) that is now successfully being used by both HRM and Mid-Shore Council on Family Violence (MSCFV). Developed between 2012 and 2014, the Model identified 10 Outcomes that provide a framework for measuring success in IPV provider programming that allows for flexibility in both interventions and in measurement tools
Through this project, HRM and MSCFV will provide training to 13 comprehensive IPV programs throughout the state of Maryland to implement the Measuring Success Outcomes Model in their programs. Providers will be assisted in selecting measurement tools that fit the unique interventions they provide. HRM and MSCFV will provide technical assistance so that providers can streamline data collection from IPV victims and create a reporting method that is user-friendly and allows providers to analyze data for trends. With meaningful data, IPV providers will be able to identify trends in service needs; use feedback to make programmatic adjustments; and have confidence that those changes will better serve victims of intimate partner violence.
To learn more about the Measuring Success Outcomes Model, please contact Janice Miller, Director of Clinical Services at House of Ruth Maryland at [email protected].

A Heavy Load With several local businesses accepting
donations for Ruth’s Closet, we needed
some help keeping up with the generosity
of local donors, and Bernie Punte stepped
up to the plate. Ferrying donations
between Ruth’s Closet, the Weinberg
Donation Center, and local stores such as
Mano Swartz and Sass, there is no place
too far for him to reach!
Bernie got so involved in the work he was doing to support us, he modified
his truck so he could carry larger items, transport hanging clothes and then
he personally supplied tarps, ropes and other items to keep our donations safe.
As if he wasn’t busy enough helping us, he also has a lift on his truck to
transport wheelchairs for Wheels for the World. In his downtime, he prepares
the best German potato salad around for our volunteer gatherings!
On behalf of House of Ruth Maryland, Ruth’s Closet and the thousands of
women and children who use our services every year, thank you, Bernie, for
helping carry our heavy loads!

A Fond FarewellAfter spending 25 years in the corporate world, John Miller went back to
school at Morgan State University and came to House of Ruth Maryland as an intern in 1994. More than 23 years later, John is retiring in December 2016, but his legacy will live long beyond his time in the office. His big personality, love of people, sense of humor, easy smile, contagious laugh, quick hugs and friendly demeanor are indisputable and his impact reaches far beyond our walls to the thousands of men he has interacted with during his time working with abusers.
John started his career in Gateway, which was then called the Batterers Program. It only took one interview with an abuser for him to know he had found his calling. He wanted to work with men who used abusive behavior in their relationships, he believed abusers could change, and he had a desire to effect change in people. Just over a year after coming to House of Ruth Maryland as he was hired as a full-time facilitator and he’s never left the group room. “If you’re not working on yourself, you’re not working,” says John and he believes men need to be engaged in a process of making changes within themselves.
John’s passion and commitment were an intricate part of the evolution of the Gateway Project. He says the biggest change from when he started in the program is the approach we now take to engage men. Our program now recognizes where they have come from, and challenges their thinking and beliefs about violence and women, but also treats them with respect, empathy and encouragement for who they have the potential to become.
His legacy goes beyond the men he’s worked with directly to the many community groups he’s built relationships with and provided training for. Organizations like Christopher Place, Yo! Baltimore, Weinberg Housing and Resource Center, Baltimore City Correctional Center, Center for Urban Families (CFUF), and Baltimore City Community Supervision, to name a few. He has a gift for encouraging people, making them feel good about themselves and inspiring them to work hard for the communities they serve.
He is encouraged by the men who complete the program and stay in touch with him by phone or stop by to let him know how they are doing, and by the men who complete and are never referred back to the program. He is inspired by the men who are excited about engaging in conversation to change their behaviors.
When asked what he would say to our community, he said “The community must be committed to doing their best to keep survivors of intimate partner violence safe.”
John will officially retire in December 2016, but his legacy lives on in our offices, our neighborhoods and our communities. House of Ruth Maryland truly appreciates his many years of service to victims of intimate partner violence.
