These are all major influences in making the film be known as people will continuously hear about it which makes them more likely to be attracted to the idea, and therefore go to see it. This is why our magazine, poster and trailer need to be interesting and engaging, as they are major parts of drawing in an audience to see our film.

A trailer for a film is the first glimpse an audience will get of live shots from the film. The

trailer gives the audience a glimpse of the narrative, normally sticking to a slightly

chronological order, but changing parts here and there to make sure it is the most

engaging it can be. It must also not give away so much of the plot that people will

already feel they know what will happen, and therefore feel it will be a waste of time

going to watch it at the cinema.

The most interesting parts of the film are put in a trailer to engage the audience, so they

feel this would be worthwhile seeing.

The trailer for “Submarine” has

an engaging, if awkward character. His narrative voice over would make people feel a connection and sympathy with him, so his personality and story would have a pull

on whether people would be interesting in seeing the film. Trailers are put onto “YouTube” which is another way for a trailer to get across to the public as anyone can

access it.

A good review is a major selling point for a film, as film reviews are normally short and

simple, so it is a quick and easy way for people to judge whether they would go to watch a film. Journalists with a good reputation are particularly important to impress

as they will already have a film “buff” following, so if they give a good review their

followers are more likely to find going to watch a film worth their time and money.

A site specifically used for rating films, by critics and audiences is

Rottentomatoes.com. It gives reviews of films before they are out by critics, which

allows people to get a general idea of whether their interest is alert or not so they

have made up their mind of whether they want to see it or not before it is out.

Also when it is released to the public, the public can

give their own opinion and star rating, which may have a big impact as

audiences are more likely to relate to people similar to themselves. An

average rating is given for both critic, and audience reviews so the public can easily see whether it is a

highly rated film or not.It is also linked to

Facebook, a good way to advertise through social networking.

British realism films generally use unknown actors, so a film cannot rely on the pulling power of a big star to draw audiences in. A poster is a major way to get a film “out there” as it can be put up in a lot of places: billboards, magazine adverts, bus stops etc. Colours can draw an audience in, for example, “Submarine” uses primary colours, not exceeding more than 5 main colours. This makes the poster bold, and would stand out to passers by.
