How do organisms of the same species interact with each other?
Turn in: reflection paragraphWrite down your homework in your planner
What are three major types of interactions among organisms?
• There are three major types of interactions among organisms:1. Competition2. Predation 3. Symbiosis
Turn to your elbow partner and explain an example of competition
Competition
Competition is the struggle between organisms to survive as they attempt to use the same limited resource.
In any ecosystem, there is a limited amount of food, water and shelter.
How does this relate to carrying capacity?
Density dependent or independent?
What is competition?
What do organisms have to do in order to reduce competition?
Predation
• Predation is an interaction in which one organism kills another for food.
• The organism that does the killing for food is the predator.
• The organisms that is killed for food is the prey.
What is predation?
What is the relationship between predator and prey?
Symbiosis
Any relationship in which two species live closely together
Finding Nemo
• On the back of your notes sheet, list as many interactions as you can. Label them as competition, predation, or symbiosis.

• Remember to think of ALL living thngs.
Three types of symbiosis
• Mutualism – both species benefit
• Commensalism – one species benefits, the other species is not affected
• Parasitism – one species benefits, the other species is harmed
What type of symbiosis was happening between the bee and the flower on the previous page??
Three types of symbiosis
• Mutualism- both species benefit
Mutualism: Zebra and zebra finch
Three types of symbiosis
• Commensalism- one species benefits, the other is not affected
Commensalism: whale and barnacles
Three types of symbiosis
• Parasitism- one species benefits while the other is harmed
Parasitism: human and mosquito
Checkpoint
• Can relationships between species change over time? Give a specific example of a relationship shifting between mutualism, commensalism, and/or parasitism.
What relationship is…..?
What relationship is ….?
Parasites

With your elbow partner, brainstorm a different example of each type of symbiosis.
Exit Ticket
• Compare and contrast predation and parasitism
