How the Internet of Things will Change Cloud Computing

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a trend that involves the number of devices that are

connected to the internet and can thus access information on the web. It can be defined

as a cloud based file sharing system that will enhance the significance of cloud

computing by making it a necessity in the business world. The scale of IoT is expected

to grow significantly in the next five years to slightly over 31 billion gadgets including

vending machines, ATMs, fitness equipment, security services, robots, cars, TV’s,

vertical applications and smart phones among others. IoT is in this case, all about

making interconnecting the databases used by all these devices to create a large pool of

information on customer tastes and preferences that would be applicable across the

globe.

The relationship between IoT and cloud computing

Cloud computing’s main achievement at the moment is with respect to making most

web based software applications affordable to even the small businesses that would

otherwise be locked out based on the cost. This means that cloud computing opens up

the small business to large opportunities. With IoT, this aspect of cloud computing will

be even more beneficial to the businesses and customers alike. The small businesses will

be able to access the vast internet informational pool without needing to invest in

expensive infrastructure. Cloud computing has already removed these restrictions. This

is such that any company in any part of the world can access all the necessary

information with respect to the tastes and preferences of the targeted potential

customers. The relationship between IoT and cloud computing is such that cloud

computing will be an enabler of IoT’s domination in the near future.

Expected changes in cloud computing

IoT is mainly about sharing information that is gathered in real time over the internet.

With an increase in IoT devices, the internet will have such vast pools of information

ready to be shared across various businesses. This means that all data centers will

experience a drastic increase in their workloads owing to the increased information that

is being availed through the IoT. Generally, cloud computing will become very heavy

and busy thus requiring a new capacity management system to avoid collapsing under

the pressure.

The major components on cloud computing include security, server’s storage and

networks. IoT will increase the amount of information being shared across the internet.

This means there will be so much information that can be accessed over the internet thus

requiring more stringent security measures to protect customers from unscrupulous

users. Cloud computing will thus have to advance and have more serious security

measures. The servers’ storage will also need to be increased if they are to remain

relevant in an era where all the necessary information is on the internet. Companies will

have a lot of informational needs and without ample storage they will be unable to

access all of it. Servers will thus require more storage capacity if they are to be useful to

the companies. With respect to networks, there will be so many sources of relevant

information that maintaining a lot of networks will be the only way to keep up in the

industry.

Real time data analytics imply having the collected information interpreted to provide

clear materials that can be used by a given organization. IoT devices will be collecting a

lot of information based on their usage and thus they will be only availing general

content that companies have to sift through in order to find data that is relevant to their

operations. With the need for real time analytics, clouds will have to be expanded into

systems that have analytics components based on the organization’s specializations so

that they can predict trends and avail real time information to the sales teams. This

implies refined customization of clouds.

Today, the cloud computing concept is a necessity but not yet a full blown requirement

in the business world. With the IoT, cloud computing will be a business requirement and

possibly the only way to ensure fair competition. As other companies gain access to

customer information and market trends in real time, it will be impossible to compete

with them using market surveys and questionnaires. This means that cloud computing

will become a backbone for every business in the world
