INTRODUCTION

Each of us has a lifetime of experience, education, anecdotes, stories, memories, cultural resources, rooms full of books, papers, birthday cards, photographs, and notes from the classes and workshops and a computer full of files.

How can we use these resources effectively? How can we even know what our resources are?

Personal knowledge management knows what knowledge we have and how we can organize it, mobilize it and use it to accomplish our goals – and how we can continue to create knowledge.

GOOGLE DESKTOP @ LIBRARIAN

Google Desktop | Desktop search is the name given to tools that search the contents of a user's own computer instead of the Internet.

Google Desktop Search was developed with the intention of bringing the Google search technology to the desktop.

The complete list of file types that the tool indexes is:

• Microsoft Excel• Microsoft Word• Microsoft PowerPoint• Text Files• Emails• Chat• Web History• Images• Acrobat Files• Music and Video Files

GOOGLE DESKTOP @ INSTALLATION

• The Google Desktop Search Engine can be freely downloaded from Google's website

• Application by itself it very small in size (just about 400 KB)

• Tool will take up about 500 MB of space on the PC to store the indexing details

• After installing the setup, the application will embed a colorful icon in your taskbar and will also create a shortcut on your desktop

• The installation is completed after you have set up a few preferences in a pop-up

• You will then be notified that the search engine is starting the initial indexing

GOOGLE DESKTOP | ADVANTAGES• The tool is tightly integrated with the website. • The tool duplicates the history of your Internet Explorer. • The indexing is performed when the computer is left idle. • Unlike, the Window Explorer Search wherein you have to

specify the drive and folder path, the Google tool can return the results instantaneously without specifying any drive or folder path.

• When you want to search for a mail in your Outlook application, the Google search returns results faster when compared to the search results of Outlook itself.

• Text snippets are displayed on the result page. • You can use it on GMAIL and can even read your old

GMAIL mails when you are offline.Pralhad Jadhav | 31 January 2015

• Without any plug-ins and modifications, the tool does not index .tmp, .temp, .obj, .pst and .dat files

• The folders that are not indexed are the System Root Folder, Recycle Bin, Local App Data and Templates

• Zip files cannot be indexed either• Only 10 results at a time are displayed

CONCLUSION• Employees and employers alike continue to search for

ways to ease the impact of information overload coupled with the pressures of tighter deadlines and leaner resources

• Libraries are feeling this same pinch, and librarians continually face the challenge of meeting the call of providing superior service with less and less

• Facilitating information retrieval was once the sole bailiwick of librarians in corporate, academic, and public environments, whose careful indexing and documenting of materials provided systematic ways to find information on demand

• With the advent of personal computers and the internet, information exploded, as did the need for personal knowledge management.

• Librarians, businesses, and the general public found themselves more dependent on the technical knowledge of computer professionals who knew how to manipulate these new environments
