Legal crap: I dont know how legal its gonna be (probably not very) but Im going to put it here to help you unde

things. Anything in this ebook is strictly advice. Yes, I am a proessional tile contractor with over 18 years o exp

absolute wealth o useless knowledge about tile, but this is still only advice.

Ultimately I am not responsible or any decisions you choose to make regarding your particular project or the ap

discussed materials and products. Everything I describe and suggest are all materials and methods I utilize on a

basis, so they work well. I, however, am not the one making use o these methods in your home you are. You

    ultimately responsible or the outcome.

Tis is not meant to righten you in any way, but theres always that one guy that

wants to sue an el that lives halway around the world because he didnt properly

utilize the correct materials. Dont be him, okay? Cause its not gonna work I havea loaded lawyer in my pocket and Im not araid to use him! (Tat last sentence was

meant to righten you) So lets get on with it.

Tere are several dierent ways to PROPERLY build a shower (and even more ways

we just need to gure out which one ts your needs.

Tis will be based on three basic things:

Cost How much you want to spend?

    Skill How handy are you?

ime How soon do you need it?

Were gonna start this o with a horribly constructed diagram o, what else, a wall.

So there you have it a wall. Nothing special or dicult about it. It is simply a wood

    with drywall screwed to it.

Now, this square rame onto which drywall is screwed is calledwait or it your r

rame o the wall is typically built out o normal 2X4s. Te vertical (up and down) b

your raming are called the studs.

When drywall is screwed to the rame the collective materials orm a wall.

I realize this is all very basic stu to some people, but not to everyone. So Im just try

cover all the bases so everyone can understand it.

    Substrates

Aaaahhh, your rst big scary word. Tis ones easy, in the case o our wall

substrate is simply the layer o drywall we screwed to it. Te drywall is the

Te substrate is just everything between your tile and your wall studs. Ta

    Important!

During this entire process you need to remember two things. Seriously remember

Tere may be a quiz later.

    1. A properly built shower is completelywaterproo beore you even touch a piece o tile.

    2. ile and grout ARE NO waterproo.

can be installed on any type o

    waterprooed substrate r

  • 7/28/2019 How to Do a Shower

    13/71

So back to our wall. We have the 2x4s (raming/studs) and the drywall (substrate)

When were talking about a shower were gonna replace the drywall with something

because when drywall gets wet it disintegrates. I your

tile is attached to this disintegrating drywall it will all

    o. We dont want your beautiul tile to all o the wall,

    right?

Were going to replace the drywall with something

called cement backerboard. Why? Because cement

backerboard doesnt disintegrate when it gets wet like

    drywall does.

    Cement Backerboards

  • 7/28/2019 How to Do a Shower

    15/71

    Tink o a cement backerboard as a

sheet o drywall, except rather than

being made out o a disintegrating

chalk-like substance it is made out o

either a ormed lightweight concrete or

    a concrete-based ber adhered together

in layers to orm the board.

    Cement

    Backerboard

    Unlike drywall, the cement bac

are not aected by water theyswell, come apart or disintegra

soaked in water like drywall do

    will remain dimensionally stab

wet they dont change size or

    apart.

  • 7/28/2019 How to Do a Shower

    16/71

Backerboards will soak up water, theywill get wet. Tey

are just not aected by this moisture. At all. A cement

backerboard is essentially a thick sheet o your

driveway its basically a sheet o concrete.

You can take a sheet o backerboard and throw it into a

swimming pool. I you leave it there or a week, or or

a year, and take it out it will be intact and exactly the

same size as it was when you threw it in it will simply

    be wet.

    Its stable get it?

  • 7/28/2019 How to Do a Shower

    17/71

So now our wall consists o our studs

    and our backerboard.

    Which one is the substrate?

Tats right its the backerboard.Well done! Get yoursel another glass

    o chocolate milk Ill wait.

Okay, lets get this thing in here...

  • 7/28/2019 How to Do a Shower

    19/71

Okay, our new wall with the backerboard substrate is going to become your shower w

the only thing in that wall that will be aected by water is your raming the studs

    to protect them rom water.

Remember, the backerboard wont be aected by water but the studs are still made r

wooden 2x4s they will swell, disintegrate, grow mold, all kinds o nasty stu.

You wouldnt throw a 2x4 into a swimming pool, leave it there or a year, and expect

the same when you pulled it out, would you? O course not, it would swell and come

    need to keep them dry.

Te purpose o waterproong a show

keep your wall raming (and everyth

outside o your shower) nice and dry

all the water inside so it can go down

Okay, your house isnt gonna blow up, but the structure around your shower your

bathroom foor, walls, basement, carpet, etc., may get ruined. We need to keep the w

where it belongs inside the shower.

For the purposes o explaining waterproong methods I want you to visualize a sim

with our sides and a bottom. I this box were made out o plastic it would hold wate

    It would be waterproo.

Tis is what were trying to accomplish. We want to turn your shower into a huge wa

box. So think about that box being made out o our walls weve been mentally buildi

  • 7/28/2019 How to Do a Shower

    22/71

We have a box with the 2x4 raming and cement backerboard

substrate. Right now thats it. It isnt waterproo. I we ll it

with water it will eventually soak through the backerboards

and soak into your raming thats what we want to avoid.

So we need to gure out how to make our box waterproo so

we can ll it with beer and go camping. We need some sort o

moisture barrier between our beer and our raming.

o begin with were going to use a regular sheet o plastic

similar to what a painters dropcloth may be made o. It needs

to be airly thick 4-6 mils thick, to be exact.

    Mils is simply

    measure o th

    thickness o th

    For instance ashopping bag

    2 mils thick. A

    duty garbage b

    about 4 mils t

Look on the bwill tell you ho

    your garbage

    then you can g

    parties.

  • 7/28/2019 How to Do a Shower

    23/71

So the rst way were going to waterproo our box is to take the regular she

o plastic and install it between the studs and the backerboard. Its very easy

to do, just staple the plastic to the studs, then install your backerboards.

Now i we ll up our box our raming wont get wet its protected by the

plastic. Te cement backerboard will get wet, but that doesnt matter, right?

    Right.

So we have our box made out o 2x4 raming with plastic installed, then

backerboards. Te plastic is our moisture barrier.

Tat was airly painless, yes? Im going to try to keep up the painless actor. So lets s

with our basic box the one with just the studs and the backerboard. Its still not wa

water (or beer) will soak through the backerboards and into your studs so we need

    o waterproong to prevent that.

Were going to take our thick sheet o plastic again and use it to waterproo the box i

dierent way this time. We are going to line the inside o the box with it.

So we essentially have our box, with the studs and backerboard, and weve put a garb

into it just like we would a trash can. Now i we ll up our box with beer again we ca

    camping.

I we ll our box with water it will not soak into the backerboar

raming both o them stay completely dry.

Now remember, tile and grout are not

waterproo so water will get behind your

tile. As long as your shower walls are

waterproo beore you install tile this will

    not be a problem.

O the two choices, traditional and topical,

the topical method o waterproong is

    better. Since your waterproong membrane

(the plastic) is directly behind your tile

    nothing else ever gets wet.

  • 7/28/2019 How to Do a Shower

    31/71

In the traditional method your substrate (the backerboard) will become saturated b

gets to your waterproong (the plastic). Tis method allows water to be retained ins

substrate, behind the tile, in between uses. Tis is completely normal! As long as you

plastic behind the substrate water will never reach your raming.

I you have a traditional wall in your shower the water that saturates your backerboa

fushed down into the drain every time you shower. It will simply be replaced with r

    Again completely normal.

Any water getting behind your tile with a topical method will immediately come in

with your waterproong and be directed down into your drain. Your shower will com

dry out between uses. Its simply quicker and cleaner.

A normal shower drain has three separate pieces and two inlets or water. Te big hol

Te other is what are called weep holes and they are located urther down the drain.

I you use a normal drain with a topical membrane you would have open holes

beneath your waterproong layer this deeats the purpose since water can get

beneath your waterproong. You need a specialized drain.

I use the Kerdi or Laticrete drain. Tere are others but I dont know how easily they

are to install or work with. Te kerdi drain is easy and easily adjustable to t your tile
