    WARNING : The following information applies to preparing an empty hard dis% for theinstallation of Windows 98. /f you use the following steps on a hard dis% that is not empty! all of the data that is on that hard dis% is deleted.

    'efore you install Windows 98 on an empty hard dis%! you must first create a primary partitionand then format a file system on that partition. Each allocated space on the hard dis% (primarypartition or logical dri"e is assigned a dri"e letter. Windows 98 supports the F3T) and F3T;*file systems. When you run the Fdis% tool on a hard dis% that is larger than ,)* M'! you areprompted to choose a file system.

    Windows 98 2etup first displays the End 7ser Cicense 3greement (E7C3 . When you accept theE7C3! Windows 98 2etup prompts you for your 04 &ey number. The 04 &ey number is atwenty5fi"e digit "alue located on the bac% of the Windows 98 045 1M slee"e.

    When you run Windows 98 2etup from within Microsoft Windows 9,! 2etup automaticallyinstalls Windows 98 to the same folder in which Windows 9, is installed. When you run Windows98 2etup from Windows ;.) or M25412! you are prompted for the folder in which to installWindows 98.

    Windows 98 2etup then runs 2can eg to test the integrity of the registry. 2can eg also ma%es abac%up copy of the registry at this point.

    Dou are then prompted to sa"e system files from the pre"ious operating system. 2a"ing thesefiles enables to uninstall Windows 98. Bote that if you con"ert your hard dis% to F3T;*! you nolonger ha"e the option to uninstall Windows 98.

    Windows 98 2etup then determines what components to install based on the following criteria:

    f $ou run Windows 98 Setup fro& within Windows 9=% Windows 98 Setup auto&aticall$installs the sa&e co&ponents that are installed in Windows 9=.

    f $ou run Windows 98 Setup fro& MS! #S or fro& within Windows 3.0% $ou are pro&ptedto perfor& a T$pical% 7ortable% Co&pact% or Custo& Setup.

    3fter you select a 2etup option! you are prompted for the locale for the /nternet channels.

    Dou are then prompted to create a Windows 98 2tartup dis%. 3fter you create a Windows 98startup dis%! 2etup proceeds to the file copy phase.

    4uring this phase! Windows 98 2etup copies the files needed to complete 2etup. This in"ol"escopying files from the Windows 98 045 1M or shared networ% dri"e to your local hard dis%.
