It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Gal 5:1a (NIV)

David the shepherd is anointed to be the next king and empowered by God’s Spirit (1 Sam 16:1-13)

22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.’ Acts 13:22 (NIV) 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. 1 Sam 16:13 (NIV)

Goliath the giant Philistine champion warrior intimidates Saul’s army for 40 days 1 Samuel 17:1-11

Goliath • About 9.5 feet tall • Armor weighed about 125 lbs. • Spear point weighed 15lbs. • Challenged Israel's best to fight

him - whoever loses - they must serve the other nation.

• “Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and terrified.” (V11)

• No one takes up the challenge.

David volunteers to fight Goliath (V20-32)

David asks: “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?” (V26) David says to King Saul: “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.” (V32)

David predicts victory over Goliath by the Lord’s power

David says to King Saul when questioned how he could fight: 36 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 37 The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” (V36-37)

David goes to the fight in the Name of the Lord David says to Goliath: “You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied…for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.” (V45-47)

He picks up 5 stones for his sling and goes to meet Goliath.

David kills Goliath with one shot

50 So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him. (V50) • David was skilled but God guided the stone. • The army won a great victory because David killed the

giant by the power of the Lord!

How to Kill My “Giant”

I must chose to battle my “giant”.

However, my choice and my will are not enough.

I must do my battle in the power of the Holy Spirit,

Because lasting life change is the work of the Holy Spirit.
