GOAL:

Your portfolio should prove that you can think critically about design, that you know how to isolate a problem and then find a solution. Don’t expect your work to speak for

itself. As a student this is much more important than it will be once you are an established designer who has proven

they know how to do this.

Tips to better portfolio posts:



Short and sweet.

Tell us what we need to know clearly and concisely. Use simple words and don’t ramble. Sectioning

information helps.



Cause and Effect.

Tell us the goal that the project sought to achieve or the problem it sought to solve. This is often best

achieved by simply separating the portfolio post into sections: “Why” and “How”, or “Problem” and

“Solution” are examples. Sectioning out this important information makes it easier for employers and

potential clients to see your critical thought process and how you achieved the winning solution.



Create a simple template.

Figure out what information you should include in each post, then stick to the format. It will streamline

your process.



An ideal template would look something like this:

• Project Title (Ex: Lenovo Website Redesign)

• Client

• Project Type or Category

• Roles and Credits

• Problem/Goal

• Solution



Show process:

It’s not always necessary, but on some projects showing the sketches and strategic planning that went into the project is as important and impressive as the final designs. This validates the value of what you do

when it comes to quoting for freelance. It also validates that you are a critical thinking, inventive and

disciplined designer, which is a rare and beautiful creature that employers are looking for.
