HOW TO REDUCE CARBON FOOTPRINT
IN MY COLLEGE
Let me first start with the top view of my college, I had also mentioned the places
where a chance of carbon or other green house gas emissions are possibly found.
The rate of emission at different regions is represented by different colours. The place
where highest amount emission takes place is represented by red colour, and the place where high
rate of emission takes place are, the IC lab and air conditioning lab. This is because in an IC engine
lab, during its working high amount of co2 is emitted with the exhaust. Also from the air
conditioning lab gases like hydro chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and
per fluorocarbons (PFCs) which may be leaked through the old air conditioning and refrigeration
systems.
Other major emissions occur are from generator room, where through the exhaust. In
canteen the emission takes place by burning of wood or kerosene, in air conditioned rooms there is
a chance of emission by leakage, and in store the emission may be caused by printed papers that
contain carbon. and in most of the rooms the emission may be caused by ordinary bulbs, which
produce co2.

Thee issions from an air condition lab can be reduced by
re lacing older air conditioning and refrigeration system by a
new one
Theemissions from the bulbscan beeliminated by re lacing
bulbs by CFLs
Old air conditioning system in air conditioning lab can be
re laced by new versions that does not have leaks and having
refrigerants that do not causeemissions
Theemission caused by printer can beeliminated by taking
copies on both sides of a single paper
For energyefficient usage of air conditioning system I have asuggestion that I will e plain below.

Here the waste heat from the refrigeration system is utilized for
heating water which can be used for cooking purpose in
kitchen, thus reducing the amount of heating required for
producing hot water for cooking purpose. Thus reducing the
co2 emission which may be produced during heating of water
by other means. The working of the system can be explained
below.
The schematic of the air conditioning and heat
exchanger is shown below
Here the condenser is replaced by a heat exchanger unit.
Where the heat from the refrigerant is used to heat the water.
And the maximum temperature of the water that can be
produced by using this system is 70 degree Celsius. A specially

designed heat exchanger is used where mixing of refrigerant
with the water is completely eliminated. now the hot water can
be stored in an insulated tank or can be conveyed to the
destination like canteen.
Another method of reducing carbon footprint is by designing
buildings according to the concept of green building. The
designing of green building can be done as follows.
Energy efficiency
Green buildings often include measures to reduce energy use. To
increase the efficiency of the building envelope, (the barrier between
conditioned and unconditioned space), they may use high -
efficiency windows and insulation in walls, ceilings, and floors. Another
strategy, passive solar building design, is often implemented in low-
energy home.
Designers orient windows and walls and place awnings, porches, and
trees to shade windows and roofs during the summer while maximizing
solar gain in the winter.
Water efficiency
Reducing water consumption and protecting water quality are key
objectives in sustainable building.
One critical issue of water consumption is that in many areas, the
demands on the supplying aquifer exceed its ability to replenish itself. To
the maximum extent feasible, facilities should increase their dependenceon water that is collected, used, purified, and reused on -site.
Materials efficiency
Building materials typically considered to be 'green' include rapidly
renewable plant materials like bamboo (because bamboo grows quickly)

and straw, lumber from forests certified to be sustainablymanaged, ecology blocks, dimension stone, recycled stone, recycled
metal, and other products that are non-toxic, reusable, renewable, and/or
recyclable.
