I am back at work after competing in my first Boston Marathon. Thankfully, I was able to complete my run prior to the bombs exploding. I extend my sympathies to the families of those who were killed in the blasts, as well as the many who were injured. I extend com-mendations to those who stopped and gave aid to the fallen.

What has the Boston Marathon to do with the Hopewell-Prince George Chamber of Commerce? Everything. It’s about being part of something bigger than oneself. It’s about competing alongside others, while encouraging one another to pull from within. It’s about community pride. It’s about perseverance. It’s about tradition.Let’s stay the course.

Stefan Calos

Dr. John Thomas delivered a message about reducing barriers and establishing “social capital” to an audience of about 135 business and community leaders on Thursday, February 21, at the Historic Beacon Theatre. The Social Capital to which Dr. Thomas referred is the economic benefit which can be derived from social connections, shared values and regional cooperation. Dr. Thomas, who is the director of the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia, spoke particularly about the inherent challenge due to the Commonwealth’s political divisions between cities and counties. He invited members of the audience to think more globally and include neighboring jurisdictions when envisioning the future. The Chamber recognized six area businesses and one non-

profit organization with awards: Best Business Practices for a Large Business:

Innovative Practices: Comcast Cable CommunicationsCommunity Relations for a Large Business: Evonik

Goldschmidt CorporationCommunity Relations for a Non-Profit:

Prince George County WOW! ProgramEnvironment: Container First Services

Exceptional Customer Service: King Communications Group

The Chamber also presented awards for service to individuals Jeff Heckert, Omni Financial, Ambassador of the Year; Fred Morene, Ford Agency, Lifetime Ambassador Award; Karen Farren, Joint Logistics Managers, Inc. and Derrick Johnson, Timmons, with President’s Choice Awards. This was the inaugural year of Chamber Hall of Fame which recognizes Chamber Members who have invested over 25 years in Chamber Membership. Over 50 businesses were recognized at the event.

Recap: MemberDRIVE The Hopewell-Prince George Chamber of Commerce hosted a special Member-ship event, Member DRIVE - Membership Accelerated, at Richmond International Raceway on Thursday, March 21, 2013 from 5:00-8:00PM. Over 100 business representatives attended from the Tri-City area. The event showcased the benefits of Chamber Membership and highlighted two partnerships: Richmond International Raceway and the USO of Hampton Roads Central Virginia (located at Richmond International Airport and Fort Lee). Activities for the evening featured a silent auction, free Pace Car rides and networking with members and prospective members. The HPG Chamber presented a portion of the silent auction proceeds to the USO Warrior and Family Program at McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond, Virginia in the amount of $500. Forty (40) Silent Auction items were donated by local businesses and individuals. This was a great opportunity for the Chamber and community to show its support for our wounded warriors and their families, as well as partnering with a great organization that supports our men and women in uniform every day. The USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia plays an active role in supporting our military at McGuire Veterans Hospital. Working directly with the staff and military liaisons at the hospital, the USOHRCV is able to meet most of the requests from the service members and their families. RIR President Dennis Bickmeier opened the event with “we’re open for business here” adding that “RIR is a great place to make business to business connections and a great place for non-profits to earn money since it takes 1500 people to put on a race weekend (and RIR has a staff of 34)”. Special Thanks to our Sponsors: Signature Sponsor- Richmond International Raceway, Gold Spon-sor- Independence Place Apartments, Silver Sponsor- Topside Tent & Party Rent-als, Bronze Sponsors- Fort Lee Federal Credit Union, Loyal Order of the Moose- Hopewell Lodge, and Vital Signs of Chester.

Earth Day Recycling Weekend April 20-22, 2013

Container First Ser-vices in conjunction with Hopewell-Prince George, Colonial Heights, Dinwiddie, and Petersburg Cham-

bers of Commerce placed recycle containers to help the community save money by bringing unwanted/outdated electronics at no charge to be recycled. The HPG Chamber thanks CFS for helping the Tri-Cities area ‘think green’!

2nd Annual Governor’s Bowl Food & Fun Drive May 27 - July 4, 2013 For the second year, the HPG Chamber will be participating in the Governor’s Bowl. The Hopewell-Prince George area received 408,050 lbs. from the food bank in 2012-2013. During last year’s Governor’s Bowl Food Challenge, the HPG Chamber collected 6,804 lbs.! To make it more fun we also created our own Member to Member challenge to see which business would contribute the most in the category of small, medium, and large businesses.

THE CHALLENGEHelp restock the shelves of your local food bank! Collect food at your busi-ness and challenge employees to get involved! Please deliver all donations to the Hopewell-Prince George Chamber of Commerce: 210 N 2nd Ave. Hopewell, VA 23860. To make a monetary donation, call the HPG Chamber: (804) 458-5536. Every $1 donated is equal to 4 lbs of food! Visit www.hpgchamber.org for more information.

THE NEEDA recent study by Feeding America found that over 1,012,500 Virginians are considered “food insecure.” This represents a 54% increase since 2006. A large number of these individuals are children, senior citizens, disabled adults, and the new face of hunger—individuals who have lost their jobs and are having problems making ends meet. Summertime is typically one of the most challeng-ing times for food banks in Virginia, especially with the number of children who are out of school and do not have access to before and after school feeding programs.

THE RESPONSEIn response to this urgent need, Governor Bob McDonnell, The Virginia Chamber of Commerce, and the Federation of Virginia Food Banks joined efforts in 2012 to create the first Chamber of Commerce Challenge Food and Fund Drive—a food and fund drive competition among all Virginia Chambers of Commerce, their member businesses, and state government offices. In its first year, the Governor’s Bowl collected the equivalent of more than 740,000 pounds of food and grocery products.

In this friendly competition, the Chamber or government office that raises the most pounds of food will be awarded a prestigious and highly coveted “Governor’s Bowl” in the categories of small, medium, and large for Chamber offices and a special bowl for the top government office. As a new addition for 2013, there will be two awards per cat-egory, one for most pounds total, and one for most pounds per capita. This brings the total number of winners to 8, each of whom will receive a one-of-a-kind handmade bowl made by a Virginia potter.

We had a chance to speak with the Chairman of the Board of the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM), Armand Lauzon, Jr. His passion for the project was evident and his commitment for CCAM to train the next genera-tion of technology leaders, to lower R&D costs for member companies, and to influence K-12 cur-member companies, and to influence K-12 cur-member companies, and to influence K-12 curriculum was apparent. He explained that he now spends about 30% of him time in CCAM related activities. In his podium remarks he thanked the Virginia Tobacco Commission, the US Economic Development Administration, the Commonwealth of Virginia, Prince George County, and member com-panies. “Each of the entities saw the vision, stepped up financially and supported the Mission, believed that a public/private enterprise could work, and each provided a level of support consistent with the Vision.” Furthermore he reminded the audience that “CCAM has defined a simple…yet unique approach to a critically important U.S. challenge….return advanced manufacturing jobs to the U.S.!” It is fascinating to imagine that Mr. Lauzon, and other world business leaders like him are travel-ing to the County and that they may speak of PG County when they discuss CCAM with business leaders all over the world. For more information on Mr. Lauzon visit www.sequa.com/team.

HPG Chamber Takes Lead Role in Launching Local Youth Manufacturing & Technology

CampRegistration is now underway via www.dreamit-doitvirginia.com for students and volunteers to participate in the camp which will be held from July 31-August 3, 2013. This community service - hosted and supported by industry - pays off in the future workforce. Every business that relies on manufacturers as customers that believes in a bright future for advanced manufacturing in the US or even companies who want to insure that our students have an abundance of experiential learn-ing experiences should consider being part of this investment. This raw material to finished goods experience will show participants that applying engineering, technology and math skills can be fun and interesting. The list of initial partners includes: ITAC, The City of Hopewell and Prince George County School Divisions, Evonik Goldschmidt Chemical, James River GENCO, RockTenn, Ashland Aqualon Functional Ingredients, Virginia American Water Company, Rolls-Royce Crosspointe Rotatives, Service Center Metals, Hopewell Cogeneration, and of course the lead organization, the Virginia Manufacturers Association. Parental attendance on the final day is a game-changer.

Richard Bland College – Message from Debbie L. Sydow,

Ph.D., President April 23, 2013 marked the live launch of

the Global Education Skills Alliance (GESA) and the Language Institute, part of a newly created Center for Strategic Initiatives at Richard Bland College. GESA is a not-for-profit education consortium that will lead a new era of global collaboration between education institutions, enterprises and in-dustries worldwide. As a consortium mem-ber, Richard Bland College will provide its students the opportunity to enhance their education by combining study abroad with employment opportunities – both domesti-cally and internationally. Through the Language Institute, Richard Bland College will offer over 50 differ-ent conversational languages to anyone, anywhere through a strategic partnership with PEC, Inc. These language courses focus on the “how” of language, not the “why” of traditional linguistics programs, and they are delivered through a proven synchro-nous distance learning platform used to train Special Forces troops before they are deployed to different regions of the world. In addition to expanding language learning options for Bland students, the Language In-stitute will serve as a resource for business, military and vacation travelers alike.

New Research Facility in Prince George

Prince George County is now home to a second applied research facility, the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Logistics (CCALS). The first is CCAM, the Commonwealth Center for Ad-vanced Manufacturing (CCAM). Taken directly from their new brochure and web site www.ccals.com, we learn that industry will determine CCALS’ research roadmap. Universities apply proven capabilities. Collaboration deliv-ers transformational results. University members include Longwood University that already has a presence in our area through the Crater Small Business Cen-ter of Longwood University, the Universi-ty of Virginia and Virginia State Univer-sity (both partners in CCAM). Central Virginia, within 750 miles of two-thirds of the U.S. population, is increasingly driven by logistics businesses and organizations. “We are thrilled to be in the community doing applied research serving the interests of our members”, commented Mark Manasco, President and Executive Director of CCALS.

Tomorrow’s Workforce

Curriculum – Business Teaching Business to the Workforce of TomorrowInternship – It’s Not Just a Job, It’s a Mentorship

J.O.B.S. is a youth workforce development program that provides 8th and 9th grade students (14-16 years old) in the City of Hopewell and Prince George County with training in workforce readiness, life skills, character education, and wellness. Its goal is to teach practical workplace skills via a curriculum (learning) and an internship (practice). Students learn about non-cognitive or soft/people skills and are introduced to the workplace. In this 2012-2013 program year, response was strong as students turned in over 150 applications last fall for 60 total classroom slots at Hopewell

High School, Woodson Middle School (Hopewell), and Clements Junior High (Prince George). Class attendance is required (only 3 absences are allowed), and students must have passing grades in all of their classes in order to participate in the program. To prepare them for the world of work, students attend after school classes that are taught by volunteer instructors/role models from the local community. Each week students receive a “Healthy Tips” handout provided by the YMCA, and this year’s class topics are:

1. Appropriate Appearance2. Responding to Authority3. Responsibility and Time Management4. Budgeting and Account Management5. Active Listening and Non-Verbal Communication6. Verbal Communication and Teamwork7. Written Communication – On the Job8. Written Communication – Getting the Job

9. Networking and Volunteering10. Employee/Employer Relationship [new this year]11. Conflict Resolution12. STEM Group Problem Solving13. Career Choices14. Interviewing Skills15. Mock Interviews16. Refresher/Orientation [new this year]

For the summer internships, employers hire students at minimum wage for up to 120 hours of work between mid-June and mid-August. Work schedules are negotiated between the student, their parents/guardians, and the employer. Employers and their employees are role models and mentors for the interns, and guidelines and evaluation forms are provided by the program. The program year ends in August with a graduation cer-

emony to which students and their families, employers, instructors, and donors are invited. Since the program was piloted in 2005, over 240 stu-dents have participated. If you would like to hire an intern this summer, be a volunteer instructor, or make a financial contribution please contact: Sharon Jadrnak, Coordinator, (804)732-7548, [email protected]
