2019 WALES RALLY GREAT BRITAIN

David Richards CBE and the Lord Mayor of Liverpool at the press launch of WRGB at Pier Head, Liverpool

Yes, it’s getting around to that time again. Separated by very few points but breaking away from the rest of the field, three crews are battling for the titles after Rally Italy Sardinia. This suggest that October’s WRGB promises to be something special.

Since the WRC promoter is wishing WRGB to move to other areas of the UK rather than just be confined to Wales, there is a possibility that next year’s event might move to Ireland. Looking to the future, could this possibly be why Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is suggesting the building of a bridge linking her country with Northern Ireland?

doc ref : 190700 HRCR Midlands Newsletter final

Possibly in an effort to demonstrate that Wales does not have a stranglehold on WRGB, the rally will be taken to the people by starting in a major city centre, namely the Pier Head waterfront in Liverpool, followed by a spectator-friendly special stage at Oulton Park that is also convenient for those living in the Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham conurbations.

Even so, the rally’s main base and service park will still remain in Wales despite moving from Toyota’s Deeside complex to downtown Llandudno, something that Conwy County Council has been seeking since 2010. Last year, the town made history when it hosted British mainland’s first world championship motorsport action on closed public roads. Now, new for the 20th anniversary of the rally known as WRGB, all the teams and manufacturers will be based in Llandudno for the very first time, alongside the international event’s busy headquarters based at Venue Cymru.

Once again there will be both National and WRC rallies running in parallel. Based on previous experience, this format often provides three runnings of particular stages and a cavalcade showing the history of rallying. The draft rally timetable and route have been announced and is likely to be as follows.

Thursday 3rd October : WRGB only

The day begins with a final pre-event Shakedown held this year for the first time in Gwydir Forest, Snowdonia in the morning before the teams head to Liverpool for the Ceremonial Start at 1600hrs.

The competitive action then begins at the Oulton Park on a special stage that incorporates sections of the picturesque racetrack. A full evening of entertainment is planned, with appearances from WRC legends and iconic vehicles, live music and DJs, historic rally displays and an autograph session which will be open to all spectators.

Crews will then head for Llandudno in readiness for the forest stages that follow

Friday 4 October : Both WRGB and National

Now the National Rally joins WRGB for a day based in the forests of the Snowdonia National Park, having nine speed tests for the WRGB contingent and six for the Nationals set either side of a lunchtime return to the Service Park.

The WRGB rally continues in the forests of Elsi (6.21 miles) and Penmachno, near Betws-y-Coed (10.53 miles), and then heads further south towards Welshpool for the forests of Dyfnant (11.81 miles) and Aberhinant (9.01 miles).

Friday afternoon will see the rally return to Slate Mountain, located at The Slate Caverns, Blaenau Ffestiniog, now with a new, upgraded surface laid since the venue was first used last October. All four of the morning’s stages are then repeated with the second run through Aberhirnant taking place well after sunset and in total darkness. The everyone returns to Llandudno.

The National rally will have just one running over the stages

Saturday 5th October 2019 : Both WRGB and National

Billed again as ‘Super Saturday’, the rally’s longest and most demanding day features the three epic stages of Dyfi (15.84 miles), Myherin (14.60 miles) and Sweet Lamb Hafren (15.97 miles) besides the addition of the new street stage in Colwyn Bay.

For the WRGB competitors, all three stages are tackled twice with the second run through Myherin being screened live on TV. A lunchtime regroup will be hosted on the streets of central Newtown. Access is free of charge.

The day finishes for the National Rally with a Ceremonial Finish on the Promenade in Llandudno whilst the WRGB crews make their way to the overnight halt back in Llandudno via an all-new Saturday evening spectator stage on the promenade in Colwyn Bay.

Sunday 6th October 2019 : WRGB only

Sunday sees the WRC action return to North Wales with two tough forest stages close to the Llyn Brenig Reservoir in the heart of the Denbigh Moors. These will be run twice either side of a timed section around the iconic Great Orme peninsula, following by a short mid-morning service halt back in Llandudno.

The second visit to Brenig is the event’s concluding Wolf Power Stage that offers the chance to score bonus WRC points in front of a live global television audience. After a brief TV podium for the overall winners at the Brenig Visitor Centre, official prize-giving for all those completing the 2019 Wales Rally GB will take place at the Ceremonial Finish on Llandudno Promenade.

TONY BARRON

It is very gratifying indeed to see that HRCR Secretary Tony Barron is making good progress since his recent operation.so much so that he was able to attend the recent debriefing for the Derbyshire Dales Drive. I am sure that we all wish him a speedy and complete recovery.

DERBYSHIRE DALES DRIVE : 2 JUNE 2019

A pictorial review

It has been decided to have a pictorial review on the following pages until such time as a report may be available. Further images can be seen via https://www.flickr.com/photos/96119718@N04/albums/72157708987885327

Those of you who have visited the website before may be wondering why its content is smaller than before and images from previous tours are no longer shown.

So how come? Since the last DDD, Flickr has changed the terms that Rocester and District Camera Club used for the use of its dedicated the website. Now, the total number of photographs that can be published has been drastically reduced since it was last used for the Derbyshire Dales Drive.

At the time of writing, two photos of each car on this year’s DDD are displayed whilst albums for the earlier six scenic tours will be restored, albeit with a smaller number of images for each than before.

HRCR CLASSIC 35 RALLY, STAFFORD : 15 + 16 JUNE 2019

The objective of this rally was ‘to provide the crews with an enjoyable weekend with competition and the opportunity to socialise with likeminded rally enthusiasts’, one that was limited to 60 cars and HRCR members only and would cover just over 280 miles, comprising 160 on the Saturday and 120 on the Sunday.

The first car left the Tillington Hall Hotel rally base in Stafford at 0800hrs to head east for a regularity section before three tests at the Curborough Sprint Circuit and then another regularity that crossed over into Derbyshire. After a coffee break, it was back to Curborough for more tests before a lengthy regularity section prior to the lunch halt at The Boars Head Hotel near Sudbury. After lunch, there were two more regularities in the Derbyshire countryside before a tea stop and then the final two regularities of the day before returning to Stafford.

On the Sunday, the first car had a slightly later start at 0830hrs before heading west from Stafford for three tests and two regularities in Shropshire before the coffee stop. Three regularity sections followed before visiting Market Drayton for a couple of tests and a brunch stop. A final regularity and then a short transport sections came before a return to the early morning venue for the final tests of the event. Another short transport section took the finishers back to the hotel for a meal, the results as listed below and the subsequent awards ceremony.

EAST ANGLIAN CLASSIC HISTORIC RALLY : 29 JUNE 2019

The recent EAC saw two HRCR Midlands crews make it into the Top Six. Clive and Anji Martin have been noticeably and steadily improving and were rewarded with second place overall. Former winners of this event, Dave Leadbetter and Cath Woodman could not repeat their previous win on this event, found that, whilst they had to settle for sixth overall, they could console themselves with winning Class 2 and an appearance at the Carsington Classic Car Show on the following day, complete with rally plate, maps and East Anglian dust and mud.

This time, Series Co-ordinator Martin Pfaff had former F1 Driver and current BTCC participant Martin Donnelly as the guest driver at the wheel of his 1300cc Lancia Fulvia : they finished 20th overall.
