Summer 2014
Hello High School Families,
So here we are in June enjoying a little bit of a break, relishing the warm weather, and-believe it or not-
getting ready for the 2014-15 school year! This year is an extra special one for The Cottage School, as we
celebrate 30 years of helping students become confident, productive and independent adults. We wanted to
make sure you have some of the details for beginning the school year now, so you can get a head start on
things that need to be taken care of before registration and orientation.
Policy Revisions: First, I want to thank you for the time and attention you gave to the parent survey. Based on
your feedback we have made adjustments in areas like instructional delivery, technology, pay scale, and
work place dress for next year. We have policy and procedure revisions in the works, including a new
technology use policy that will enable HS students to maintain possession of their cell phones for the
duration of the school day. In this BYOD (bring your own device) environment, teachers can more
efficiently provide opportunities for students to access information and use web-based applications in class.
We have updated our pay scale to align more with current minimum wage standards, there are no longer
color restrictions for ladies nail polish, and we are implementing Spirit Wear Casual Fridays where
appropriately nice blue jeans can be worn with a TCS spirit shirt. Due to our students difficulty managing
“hoodies” as garments allowed outside only, we are asking that you take a good look at student’s outerwear.
We are no longer allowing hooded sweatshirts (sweatshirt material) as outerwear, but of course, work place
appropriate coats and jackets with hoods are still allowed. If you have questions, have your adolescent swing
by my office with the garment so I can check it out! All of these policy revisions are intended to optimize
opportunities for learning, increase student performance and to provide additional opportunities for students
to practice making appropriate choices for the work place.
Staff Additions: We are excited to add to our instructional team this year and want to welcome Erin Oleson
in Science and Math, Isha Matthews in English, Aubrey Van Benthem in Social Science and Hector Vasquez
in Spanish. All come with excellent experience and references, and we are looking forward to adding their
talents to our already fabulous team.
Summer Reading Goal - Two Books/Graphic Novels: Education research stresses that students should be
reading over the summer. Summer reading credit is solely dependent on points earned through reading
journals or projects presented to teachers upon their return to school. We will accept submissions up to
August 15th
. We trust that you will assist your teen in choosing reading material appropriate for their age and
reading level.
Manual Review: Review the revised Student Policy and Procedure Manual that is posted on our website:
www.cottageschool.org with your student, prior to signing the on-line form.
Enrichment Classes for Rising 9th
Graders: These classes July 21 – July 25 are a great way to prepare
your student for the 2014-2015 year. Please see the attached flyer about this opportunity.
Forms Due by July 16th
: In order to ensure your student gets first priority for registration in the classes they
would like and to save time on orientation, please complete forms and submit by July 16th
. Complete
ON-LINE forms for Vital Student Information, Elective choices, and PE uniform orders. For the remaining
forms, please complete and return either 1) mail, 2) scan and email ([email protected]), or
3) hand deliver to the school.
Registration: Since you will have submitted all of your forms and payments as needed by July 16th , you
will breeze through registration. You will receive your preliminary schedule, calendar, text books, locker,
sign-up for athletic teams, purchase PE uniforms, and reserve a parking space for your driving teen. In
addition, parents will receive information from the Parent Association and Booster Club. Be sure students
attend in school dress code (see Policy and Procedure Manual).
Registration and Orientation for 10th
, 11th
, 12th
Returning Students: Wednesday, August 6th
9:00-11:00A.M. Report in school dress code to the Reinhardt Community Center in the Administration
Building. I strongly encourage a parent be in attendance.
Registration and Orientation for all 9th
grade and New Students & a Parent/Guardian: Thursday,
August 7th
9:00-11:00A.M. Report in school dress code at 9:00A.M. to the Reinhardt Community
Center in the Administration Building. New Student Registration REQUIRES at least one parent’s
attendance with their child from 9:00-11:00A.M. Starting at 9:01A.M. there will be a group orientation
session and review of some policies and procedures.
RSVP- Parent and Family Social: Thursday, August 14th
from 5:30P.M. to 7:00P.M. in the Reinhardt
Community Center. Please mark your calendar and make plans for the whole family to attend! This is a good
time to meet everyone and find families in your zip code to establish car pools. RSVP by August 12th
to
Stephanie with the number of family members attending the picnic: [email protected] or 678-
250-5125.
New Families: Wednesday, August 13th
we are hosting a New Parent Coffee at school from 8:00-9:30A.M.,
and there will be a New Parent Reception on Thursday, August 28th
, 6:00-7:30P.M.
Medication: Some of our students take medication during the school day. Please read our HS medication
policies in the Policy and Procedure Manual carefully and be prepared to follow the procedures listed. We
request that you deliver a couple of „emergency‟ doses to Ivan Plastiak so that we have medication here
to administer should your child forget his/her medication. To ensure that all students receive the
prescribed medication and dose, please provide the school with your student’s medication in a prescription
bottle with the medication information and dosage clearly indicated on the bottle.
Lunch: We are working again with Wholesome Tummies. Please see attached information on the lunch
program and get signed up! If you prefer to pack a lunch, be sure it is labeled with student name. There are
microwaves and a refrigerator in the RCC for student use.
Snack: We know the benefits of a quick snack mid-morning, so we are maintaining a snack opportunity at
the beginning of fourth period. Students may purchase snacks from the snack cart or bring their own.
Students are encouraged to bring something healthy and easy to eat quickly…fruit, granola, yogurt, energy
bars, water…items that will give their metabolism the boost it needs to sustain attention until lunch.
Materials for School: It is perfectly acceptable for HS students to wait to purchase school supplies until
receiving each teacher’s syllabus. In order to assist with organizational issues, and for those of you who want
to shop early, TCS uses the following COLOR GUIDE for each academic discipline. We ask that you
follow these same color schemes when purchasing your school materials:
English or Language Arts Classes – Red Notebooks
Mathematics – Blue Notebooks
Social Studies – Yellow Notebooks
Science – Green Notebooks
Electives – White/Black & other color Notebooks
In general, HS teachers prefer separate, 1 inch, 3 ring binders for each class, but allow one binder with
divided, color sections if that works best for your student. In addition, a few pens, pencils, loose leaf paper or
tablets and a pack of highlighters are encouraged. A flash drive is a must!
First Day of School Monday, August 11th
: Be sure students have a writing utensil and at least one notebook
to start the year off successfully. Remember, we are a team and we need your support to see that our
students are fully prepared so they get off to a good start.
We are looking forward to another great school year. Many of us will be available throughout the summer to
answer any questions you may have, so feel free to call or stop by. I look forward to seeing you soon!
Sincerely,
Laura Finnell
High School Principal
Attention Parents and Students
We will have a carpool signup for those interested
at orientation on August 6th
and 7th
.

What is GAGoal? GAGoal is a Student Scholarship Organization (SSO) in which Georgia individual and corpo-
rate taxpayers can contribute in exchange for a state income tax credit and possible federal charitable in-
come tax deduction. GAGoal then uses the contributions to award scholarships to students from K-12 public
schools so that they can attend the private schools chosen by their parents.
How does our school benefit from GAGoal? As a GOAL Participating School, our school is eligible to promote
the GOAL program to its donors who can designate that their contributions to GOAL be used to provide
scholarships at our school. Thus, our school will be able to increase the amount of financial aid for which
its students and their families are eligible. This could result in increased enrollment, increased tuition in-
come, and increased opportunities for deserving students and their families to become a vital part of our
community. In 2013-14, over 42% of TCS families qualified for need-based financial aid!
How does GAGoal work? Because there is a limited amount of tax credits available each year, a taxpayer
who is interested in contributing to GOAL must express his or her intent to do so to the Georgia Department
of Revenue (“DOR”). If there are still tax credits available, the DOR will inform the taxpayer to proceed with
his or her contribution to GOAL. So that interested contributors are not burdened at all by this process,
GOAL and our school make the pre-approval and contribution process very easy to complete. Once ap-
proved, the taxpayer contributes to GOAL and designates our school as the place at which her or she would
like the contribution to be used in providing scholarships to qualified students. Once the contribution is re-
ceived, GOAL sends a notice to the taxpayer, who can then take an income tax CREDIT against their Georgia
income taxes for the amount of their contribution made that year.
What is the maximum amount that an individual can contribute to GOAL in exchange for a Georgia educa-
tion expense tax credit?
A married couple filing a joint return can re-direct up to $2,500 of their income tax payments to GOAL.
A married couple filing a separate return can re-direct up to $1,250 of their income tax payments to
GOAL.
An individual can re-direct up to $1,000 of his or her income tax payments to GOAL.
An individual who is a member of a LLC, shareholder of an “S” Corporation, or partner in a partnership
(pass-through entities) is allowed a Georgia income tax credit for up to $10,000 of the amount they con-
tribute to a SSO, so long as they would have paid Georgia income tax in that amount on their share of
taxable income from the pass-through entity. (For more information for owners of pass through entities,
How does a tax credit differ from a deduction? A tax credit is significantly more beneficial than a deduction.
A credit reduces your Georgia taxes dollar-for-dollar while a deduction reduces the taxable income upon
which taxes are calculated.
What is the deadline for making contributions that qualify for the tax credit? In order to contribute to
GOAL for a tax credit, an individual or corporation must receive pre-approval from the Georgia Department
of Revenue. The pre-approval process must be completed and all contributions postmarked to GOAL within
60 days of DOR pre-approval, and never later than December 31st of the applicable calendar year in order to
be accepted.
Why should I give now? In 2014, the entire $58 million cap was reached on January 22nd! As a result, thou-
sands of Georgia taxpayers who wished to make their contribution to a SSO were unable to do so for a tax
credit. Once the cap is reached, although a taxpayer can still contribute to GOAL, he or she will not receive an
education expense tax credit for doing so. Because there are hundreds of private schools in Georgia that are
promoting the availability of the Georgia Education Expense Credit program in their school communities, it is
a very competitive environment and taxpayers need to make their pre-approved contributions as early in the
year as possible. GAGoal will begin accepting application forms for 2015 beginning August 1st. Click here
to be taken to the GAGoal Website and do the paperless process!
How do I find more information about Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program? If you have questions about the
Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program, please review the GOAL website at www.goalscholarship.org. Additional
questions? Contact Joe Digieso: [email protected] or 678/250-5100.

Big Changes to Assistive Technology
@ TCS This year, The Cottage School is pleased to announce several changes and upgrades to the assistive software available to our students. Some of the resources are available to you because you’re a part of TCS, and others are resources you might not be aware of (yet!) that are freely available. First, we’ve changed the program that runs ClassWeb. It’ll still be ClassWeb, but it will have a new look and feel—and a new web address. You’ll still be able to access electronic versions of textbooks and class resources, but we’ve updated the look and feel a little bit to make it easier to find things. Look for the specifics during orientation in August. One of the things that will be staying the same is the availability of Premier Tools to you. Premier Tools is a suite of programs that help with making decoding less of a chore—freeing you up to focus on what really matters, comprehending what you’re reading. If you go to http://cottageschool.org/school/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/How-to-Download-Premier-Tools-at-Home.pdf, you’ll find a step-by-step guide for how to get these tools on your home laptop or desktop (but not mobile devices or tablets). The same suite of tools is available on every single student computer on campus, too. Because not all students need text readers—and some of us need other tools—we encourage you to browse The Freeloader’s Guide to Educational Apps (https://sites.google.com/site/freeloaderedu/), which is a searchable site full of educational apps sorted by function and by platform (Android, iOS, Chrome, and others). No one person or school can tell you definitively what apps are the best—software is just changing too quickly and has too many options. But the Freeloader’s Guide is a good place to start with reviews that will help you find the right set of technological tools to help you be independent at school. Feel free to let Nathan, your other teachers, and your peers know if you find a really helpful app. Spread the word! As many of you know, Nathan has held several training sessions on assistive tools for students and parents over the past few years. But that’s another part of Assistive Technology at TCS that’s going to change this year. Instead of in-person trainings that take up your evening, we’re going to have an on-line video channel that will lead you—at your own convenience—through the same training as in past years, and through training on some other apps and tools as well. Again, more information about this will be ready for you during orientation and in future Wednesday Packets. For more information about any of the changes or to share a helpful app you’ve found, contact Nathan Edwards at [email protected].
Summer 2014
Dear Parents,
The following pages contain information regarding the physical education and athletic
programs for the next school year.
The first matter concerns PE uniforms. Of course, our policy as outlined in the Student
Handbook requires Cottage School issued uniforms for all physical education and
“athletic” elective classes. Please place your on-line order as soon as possible to ensure
that we have enough inventory for our first day of school.
The second form (Pre-participation Physical Examination) contains two sections. You
must complete the front of the form yourself, while arranging for a doctor to fill out the
other two pages. This form must be returned for students to gain eligibility for all Cottage
School athletic teams. The Athletic Department is required by the Georgia Independent
School Association and the Atlanta Athletic Conference to retain these forms on file for
all students who participate in athletics. Those who are unable to get their physical over
the summer will have an opportunity to do so during orientation.
The third form is the Parental Consent for Participation in Interscholastic Athletics. This
form must be completed by parents or guardians and returned to the school. Only
students with signed consent forms will be eligible to participate in Cottage School
Athletics. This form needs to be updated each year for returning student athletes.
The final page is The Cottage School Letter Jacket order form for high school students’
participation. Please consider showing your Cougar pride and invest in a Cougar Letter
Jacket for participating in all the sports The Cottage School has to offer as well as other
extra-curricular activities such as chorus, the math team, Drama, and yearbook to name a
few. We will have a jacket fitting during high school Orientation.
Thank you for your attention to these matters.
Sincerely,
Richie Briggs
Athletic Director

Promote Cougar Pride
Support the Athletic Booster Club in 2014-2015
Over 65 percent of our students participate on 17 athletic teams at The Cottage School. Our athletes
and coaches need your help as team parent supporters. Our gym creates additional opportunities for
Booster Club activity (help with Concession Stand Oversight, scoreboard operation and the like).
Please consider an investment in the success of the TCS athletic programs. Your open support of any
amount (Checks payable to TCS – Booster Club; mailed or delivered to Bob Crenshaw) allows the
athletic department to cover both unexpected necessities as well as “nice to have” but unbudgeted
items, such as our new XC and Track & Field uniforms and coaches gifts. The students are vested;
please help reinforce the principles being set forth by being involved too. Watching and cheering is
great but helping is superb and a necessity!

Did you know that the Parent Association (PAC) dues are included with your tuition? Many of you may be wondering exactly what PAC is all about and how you can be involved. PAC provides much of the volunteer manpower for programs and initiatives at The Cottage School. PAC volunteers can be seen performing several activities including: administrative support at both the middle school and high school, help in our media center, staff appreciation activities, campus appreciation days, TCS birthday celebration, social events, parent support and education opportunities, community service projects and more! The list goes on and on….we’d like to hear about your talents and interests…we’ll find a satisfying volunteer position for YOU! The most important thing is for your student to see you involved in their school. Your involvement shows them just how important their education is to you. There is a volunteer position for everyone; whether you work full-time, part-time, live around the corner from TCS or have a one hour + commute each day. There is a way for you to get involved in your PAC. Please let us know if you are interested in participating. Please direct any questions to Brenda at [email protected] or Becky at [email protected]. Be sure to fill out the volunteer form included in the summer packet. Our first event is the PAC Family Social on Thursday, August 14th from 5:30 pm-7:00 pm in the Reinhardt Community Center on campus. This is a great opportunity to see old friends and make some new ones in the TCS Community. Mark your calendar now!

Dear Parents:
The Cottage School strives to create and ensure a safe environment where your student can
flourish both academically and socially. Part of ensuring your student’s safety to accomplish
these goals is to do our best to make certain The Cottage School is a drug and alcohol free
campus.
The Cottage School has a history and culture of trusting our students and parents to inform us
of any known illegal substances present on campus. We believe this has served us and our
community well in the past and will continue to serve us well as we move forward. In
addition, The Cottage School plans to renew our contract with Interquest Detection Canines in
order to actively prevent the use or presence of illegal substances on our campus. Interquest
uses mild mannered, scent trained dogs, such as Golden and Labrador Retrievers, Springer
Spaniels and Weimaraners to detect the presence of prohibited substances. The canines will
search the outside area around cars, lockers and bags. If the canine detects drugs or alcohol,
the applicable student will be asked to open the designated area for a confidential search of
that area. If anything is found that creates a concern for the school, the substance will be
turned over to an administrator and the parent will be contacted for a conference. Canine
Detection dogs are unable to discriminate between legal and illegal drugs. Students who have
over-the-counter medication in appropriate doses or prescribed medication in the prescription
bottle will not be penalized. The Roswell Police Department will be notified when students
are in possession of illegal or unidentified substances.
The Cottage School is very excited and pleased to continue this additional step in keeping our
community and student body drug and alcohol free. If you have any questions or would like
further information, you can view Interquest’s web page at www.interquestk9.com or contact
your respective principal.
Sincerely,
The Cottage School
