Green waste updateCouncil is pleased to report that garbage collections are as per normal and Cleanaway are working towards getting recycling collections up to date this week.

Your garbage and recycling collections are Councils priority. Cleanaway have advised that green waste will resume to the normal collection cycle from Monday 1 September. Green waste will not be collected until this date.

For further information on your collection area, refer to the map on Councils website.

If you have placed green waste bins out for collection you can bring them into your property until the dates listed above.

Residents who have put their recycling bins out already or will put them out later this week as part of the normal collection cycle, please leave the recycling bins out (including Saturday).

We appreciate and thank you for your patience as waste services are being restored.

Bin collections were suspended in Hobsons Bay and in other Council areas throughout Australia for safety reasons. This followed waste management contractors Cleanaway voluntarily grounding their fleet nationwide following an accident that resulted in two fatalities in South Australia.

A Newport firefighter last week did one of the hardest thing he has ever done in his life retire.

But former senior station officer Steve Clarke said that after 40 years membership, he still felt connected to the brigade through his son, third generation firefighter James Clarke, who is nearing 16 years of service.

Steve Clarke, 64, was mostly stationed at Footscray, Newport and Sunshine, but he has worked at virtually every station in Melbournes west.

Retiring has been one of the most difficult things Ive had to do in my life. I really have struggled with it, he said.

But the good thing is that James is still there so I still have that connection, and you never lose those friends.

When James joined, it was the proudest day of my life.

I find now that almost every single friend I have in the world is a firefighter or the wife of a firefighter, so it is a close-knit community.

Mr Clarke cited the two biggest changes during his career as the introduction of women firefighters about 24 years ago and firefighters starting to attend medical emergencies more than a decade ago.

In 1991, he nearly lost his life as he fell head-first through two floors while attending a fire at a derelict factory in Brooklyn.

His wife, Barbara, said doctors told her it was unusual for people to survive after

breaking so many bones. Mr Clarke broke his skull and all his ribs.

It was like he was a toffee apple and someone got a hammer and smashed it, she said.

Mr Clarke was critical of the state government, which is battling the MFBs union over its enterprise bargaining agreement, for not recognising the work of firefighters.

Im absolutely dismayed at the way the state government is treating not only our firefighters but our paramedics as well, he said. Theyre treating them with contempt.

Theyre spending, I believe, up to $40,000 a day in the courts staggering amounts of money.

When they say all of your fire service levy goes back in to the fire service oh yeah, sure.

Most of it is going on court costs to reduce our terms and conditions.

When youre at hangings and car accidents and working on a drug addict in a back alley in the pouring rain at two oclock in the morning, and weve got the hierarchy at Fair Work Australia saying we think were paying them too much or their conditions are too generous well, I dont think they are.

    Firey not the retiring type

The cause of death of 30 little penguins which washed ashore at Altona beach last Wednesday morning remains a mystery.

An interim post-mortem examination revealed the animals were of good body condition and disease-free.

There is speculation they may have drowned after being caught in a commercial fishing net.

A resident called authorities after he saw several dead penguins about 8am.

Officers from the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI), Fisheries Victoria and Hobsons Bay council scoured the shoreline and bagged penguins.

Zoe Hogg, of Earthcare St Kildas penguin team, said officers had no idea how the animals died. The last I heard was that they may have got caught in a fishing net, she said.

One fisherman once told me that he doesnt usually get penguins in the net because they run across the top.

Wildlife rescuers assume the penguins were caught in a commercial fishing net because of they way they were found at the one location.

Ms Hogg said she didnt believe it was possible for such a large number of penguins to die from natural causes.

Only one of the penguins had a microchip, which revealed it had originally come from a colony at St Kilda Breakwater. The penguin was microchipped in 2004, but had not been seen for eight years.

You get the occasional Phillip Island one up

here [at St Kilda], so I suppose the occasional one will go walking and find himself a new girlfriend, Ms Hogg said. She said penguins often landed at Altona if they were sick.

DEPI regional director Travis Dowling said tests were continuing.

A DEPI veterinary pathologist will undertake further tests to ascertain the cause. This is a sad and very unfortunate event.

The bodies of five penguins were taken to La Trobe University on Wednesday afternoon, while the rest have been frozen.

Phillip Island has Victorias largest colony of little penguins. About 1200 penguins live at St Kilda.

The little penguin is the smallest species of penguin, growing to an average of 33 centimetres high and 43 centimetres long.

A floating swimming pool, a tea rooms, shared walking and cycling paths, and wetlands and playgrounds form part of a $21.7 million council strategy to revamp the edge of the Maribyrnong River at Footscray.

The Footscray River Edge Masterplan, was expected to be endorsed by Maribyrnong council last night (Tuesday). It outlines improvements for a two-kilometre stretch of the river from Ballarat Road south to Lyons Street.

The plan will significantly upgrade and help redefine Footscray, focusing on the Newells Paddock wetland and waterfront around the Community Arts Centre.

Projects will include a playground, skate park, a 500-metre timber wharf along the rivers edge and a promenade along the old railway line, a floating swimming pool near the Footscray Community Arts Centre, and historic railway carriages redeveloped as cafes and kiosks.

Open spaces will be created for festivals and events, with more areas for public artworks, picnic tables, barbecues and extra seating.

The council has allocated $400,000 in its 2014-15 budget to start the works.

The council received 17 submissions on the draft masterplan, released in May, from organisations including Footscray Riverside Action Group, Friends of Newells Paddock, Melbourne Water and the National Trust.

A report attached to the masterplan detailed the untapped potential of the rivers edge.

The river was central to Footscrays industry, its civic identity and its public life, it states.

In recent decades, the industries that flourished and brought activity to the river have one-by-one closed or relocated elsewhere [and] what was once a vibrant working waterfront has become quiet and disconnected from the city.

The masterplan outlines the proposed key moves for reconnecting the community of the inner west with the river.

It identifies opportunities to create a vibrant river edge that attracts and engages with the community of the inner west.

The waterfronts key areas Newells Paddock, the Joseph Road Precinct, the rivers edge between Hopkins Street to Footscray Road and Lyons Street each possess different qualities and opportunities which contribute to the masterplan vision.

Key changes to the draft masterplan include greater emphasis on the rivers historical character, more user and visitor facilities, enhanced access to the waterfront and more greening of the rivers edge.

The councils open space strategy has identified the need for improved open space along the waterfront.

Williamstown Uniting Church is inviting the community to experience renditions of classical masters played on its 120-year-old pipe organ.

International organist Rohit Sailas will play the churchs state-significant 1893 Fincham and Hobday organ as part of Ranks of Heaven.

The two-manual organ of 20 stops was built especially for the church at a cost of 670 pounds. Its only alteration has been a mixture stop added in the 1980s.

    Sailas, originally from Bangalore, will

perform works by Bach, Handel, Dvorak and other masters.

A founding member of gospel rock band Sailas and The Cantonment Jazz Band, Sailas said a high point of his career was conducting and accompanying Mozarts Requiem Mass with a 50-voice choir and chamber orchestra.

The free concert is at the church in Electra Street, Williamstown, from 5.15pm on September 6.

100% of your fi re levy goes to our fi re servicesLast year, the Victorian Government replaced the Fire Services Levy with a fairer system, as recommended by the Victorian Bushfi res Royal Commission. Now every property owner contributes a fair share to Victorias fi re services, not just those with adequate insurance. Eligible pensioners and veterans also receive a $50 concession.

100 per cent of the fi re levy goes to support greater funding of the operations of the Country Fire Authority and Metropolitan Fire Brigade. This includes fi refi ghters, staff and volunteers, training, community education, protective clothing, vital lifesaving equipment and more than 1,200 fi re stations and 2,300 trucks.

Each year, Victorias fi refi ghters attend more than 78,000 incidents, including road accidents and rescues, bush and grass fi res, fi res in the home, and workplace incidents. Its a fairer fi re levy.

Ever wondered where Footscray got its name? For the answer, you have to go half way around the world to south-east London.

One of Melbournes oldest suburbs, Footscray dates back to a settlement known as Saltwater, which grew at a crossing point on the Maribyrnong River in 1839.

By the late 1800s, it was already well developed and accounted for a large amount of Melbournes industrial output.

Footscray station became a major transport junction and the markets attracted visitors from across the city.

In England, Foots Cray took its name from Godwin Fot a Saxon landowner recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 and from the Cray River, which passes through a village that was situated on the old Maidstone Road leading from London to Kent.

Footscray has Footscray Park on the banks of the Maribyrnong River, while its English namesake has Foots Cray Meadows, a heritage-listed 89-hectare park formed from two mid-18th century landscaped parks.

While Footscray has a rich industrial heritage and was home to the likes of Kinnears, Olympic Tyres and an ammunition factory, Foots Cray has a large Coca-Cola bottling plant and was the base of a company producing radio and television sets as early as 1928.

Few people are better qualified to discuss the origins and links between Footscray and Foots Cray than Footscray Historical Society secretary Catherine Reichert. She will present a free talk about the history of both areas, in Australia and England, this Sunday.

Historical society committee member Carmel Taig said Ms Reichert was passionate

about the heritage and connections between the two areas, despite them being separated by more than 17,000 kilometres.

We have Catherine to thank for sustaining the vital links between Footscray and Foots Cray, she said. On each trip to England, she makes a point of visiting Foots Cray.

Ms Taig said Ms Reichert, who has been secretary of the historical society for two decades, had a particular interest in the period when Footscray was founded.

If you want to know more about what was here in Footscray in 1848, and what the two towns have in common, come along and Catherine will take you on a journey.

The free event is at Ercildoune, corner of Hyde and Napier streets, Footscray, from 2pm. For more details, visit www.footscrayhistoricalsociety.org.au.

Paying homage to two great moods of the string orchestra dance and elegy the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra will next week bring Bach, Bartok and baroque to Williamstown.

The Elegies And Dances concert is part of Hobsons Bay councils Arts At Your Doorstep program, which provides high-quality classical and cultural performances at reasonable prices.

Seating is around tables and guests are invited to bring hampers and enjoy music with their suppers and refreshments.

Elegies And Dances is a mix of slow, tragic music and uptempo, explorative dance. Works range from Bartoks Romanian Folk Dances to

a full-string arrangement of Purcells Didos Lament, described by some as one of the saddest and most beautiful pieces of music ever written. With more than 250 appearances under his bow, MCO artistic director William Hennessy is sure to please with his solo performance of Bachs Concerto In A Minor.

The concert is on Thursday, September 4, from 7.30pm at Williamstown Town Hall. Tickets cost $35/$25 concession; discounts are available for groups of 10 or more. Bookings: 9932 4074 or www.hobsonsbaytickets.com.au.

The Langham Melbourne is the perfect antidote for any Melburnian needing a quick break.

The Langham, on Southbank, prides itself on offering modern yet timeless elegance.

Its this winning mix that has led me to return countless times for a luxurious overnight stay or indulgent weekend away.

This time around we booked the Away with the Fairies package, which included overnight accommodation for two, a full buffet dinner at Melba and breakfast the next morning, a late checkout of 2pm, and valet parking.

We stayed in a Grand River Room on the 18th floor with a great view of the Yarra River and Flinders Street Station.

The room itself is simply furnished with a king-size Langham Blissful bed, desk and armchair with Ottoman.

But its the small touches from the luxury Chuan Spa amenity products in the bathroom and the copy of Alice in Wonderland in the bedside table drawer to the bottle of water placed in your car at checkout that impress.

The marble bathroom is comfortably set out and includes a separate shower and deep bathtub. If youre celebrating a birthday or anniversary, be sure to let them know when you book and you will be rewarded with a slice of chocolate cake on arrival and a handwritten note congratulating you on your milestone.

When dining at Melba, make sure you come with an appetite.

The buffet offers a wide range of food stations with an international cuisine and serves up fresh seafood, cooked-to-order pasta, specially-made naan bread, a delicious array of dumplings, and desserts to die for.

My personal favourites included sushi made to order, naan bread with M&Ms, Peking duck pancakes and churros with a chocolate dipping sauce. To drink, try the apple crumbletini.

Back in the room, the bed lives up to its reputation: you just sink into the soft mattress and pillows and drift off into a peaceful nights sleep.

The Langham Melbourne is also home to a swimming pool, fitness centre, and the Aria Bar and Lounge, which is renowned for its Tiffin High Tea.

Away from it all, close to homeThe Langham is a great escape, writes Charlene Macaulay

Until a few years ago there were three basic building blocks in high-quality audio. Now there are four. The things youve always needed are an amplifier, a pair of speakers and a CD player. Thats a CD player, not a DVD or Blu-ray.

Number four is a turntable. Yep, for playing records. If youre scoffing, here are four sound reasons to get one:

1 \ They sound great and vinyl is not going away.

2 \ The software is cheap and abundant. You can buy records at garage sales for a few bucks. Theyll introduce you to music from times before digital manipulation.

3 \ Theyre fun. Slide the record from the sleeve, place it on the platter, clean it, lower the tonearm and be rewarded with pure, luxuriant music. 4 \ Turntables look great and mark you as a perfectionist.

So what do you need for fabulous sound? Start with the amplifier, a simple two-channel stereo unit with an inbuilt phono pre-amplifier for the turntable. Id recommend Yamahas new AS201, a mighty performer for $400.

Speakers are personal and it pays to listen around. I think the best sound-for-dollar equation is presented by Focals Chorus 705s at about $700 a pair, but then I have my ears and you have yours. You might prefer B&W 686s, also $700.

CD player? Its hard to beat Marantzs CD5004 for $490. Its built with all the traditional values of expensive Marantz offerings, and much of

the technology. And so to turntables. Pro-Ject is the biggest seller in Australia. Pro-Jects are so popular that the importer just paid $31,000 to airfreight a load of them in from Austria.

They start at $429 for the Essential II, but the $499 RPM 1.3 Genie performs better and looks more interesting. Appearances matter because your turntable is always on display. It should be a conversation starter and this one is.

If you want iPhone/iPod connectivity, budget another $180 on Yamahas YDS-12 universal dock.

Throw in some quality speaker cable and youre at $2300-odd all up for a system that sounds rich, full and fantastic likely way better than anything youve ever heard.

Final tip Shop around specialist dealers because these guys know more than you do. Buy your system there and they might even come out and hook it up for you for free.
