Residents are �ghting plans for a 600-dwelling, 10-storey development on the former Caltex site in South Kingsville.

Tract Consultants has appealed to the Victorian and Civil Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) to approve its master plan for land at 38-48 Blackshaws Road and 24 Sutton Street.

Outcry over high-rise bidand more than 1200 new vehicles on to Williamstown Road, �e Avenue and Millers Road, “which are already congested”.

�e site’s administrator, Chris Turner, said: “Council was willing to approve 450 dwellings, but this greedy developer is applying to VCAT for 600 dwellings on this 4.5-hectare site.

“We do not object to this site being developed – in fact, we are glad it will be used for residential instead of industry – but we are against this high density, high-rise over-development in our area,” he said.

“We want an appropriate treatment that will protect our amenity. �ey’re not building more schools or hospitals to take this in�ux of people.”

Hobsons Bay chief executive Chris Eddy said the plans went before VCAT because the council had not received enough information to make a decision within the prescribed period.

“We encourage all interested members of the public and those who live nearby to really familiarise themselves with the proposed master and concept plans for the site,” he said.

“�e plans are publicly available and comments and responses can be made to VCAT until Wednesday, February 11.”

Tract Consultants was contacted for comment and said that it would have to defer to its client. No response was received by deadline.

�e plans can be viewed at the council’s civic centre, on its website and at its libraries. A drop-in information session will be held at the South Kingsville Community Centre, 43 Paxton Street, on January 22, 4.30-7.30pm. Council o�cers will attend to answer questions.

An 18-month-old girl was hit by a car and thrown one-and-a-half metres in the air at Altona beach on Sunday night.

Police Sergeant Jason Van Doren said it was “only by the grace of God” that the girl escaped with non-life-threatening injuries a�er being struck about 6.15pm on the Esplanade, near Romawi Street.

He said the girl’s father had become distracted by another young child, and the girl ran on to the road straight in front of a car.

�e Altona girl was admitted to hospital overnight for checks before being discharged.

Lucky escape for toddler

A Braybrook man has been charged with the murder of his uncle at a Footscray carpark on December 31.

Police found the 32-year-old uncle unconscious in Stanlake Street about 1.40am. He was taken to Footscray Hospital where he later died.

It is understood the nephew, 21, had earlier presented at the same hospital with his uncle.

In a separate incident, a 28-year-old Footscray man was stabbed outside a Footscray McDonald’s store on January6. A 20-year-old Footscray man has been charged with intentionally causing serious injury.

Elderly people coming into aged-care centres could be slugged an extra $1000 at an emotionally critical time a�er the federal government decided to scrap a key funding source.

Doutta Galla Aged Services, a not-for-pro�t community aged-care provider with centres at Footscray and Yarraville, will lose about $185,000 a year a�er the axeing of the “pre-entry leave subsidy funds”.

�e subsidies are used to help aged-care providers hold beds for up to seven days while incoming residents settle their other a�airs.

Funding for the subsidy is expected to be cut in July.

Doutta Galla Aged Services chairman Bruce Mildenhall said he was outraged by a decision he said would hurt elderly people living in the west.

“�e subsidy gave new residents peace of mind at a time of signi�cant change, and provided them with adequate time to make arrangements, pack up their belongings and get them in order before making the emotional move into permanent residential aged care,” Mr Mildenhall said.

“It enabled aged-care providers to hold a bed for new residents without �nancial stress to either resident or provider.”

Without the subsidy, residents will need to pay $1000 for the seven-day holding period.

Mr Mildenhall said the decision would put stress on older people already dealing with an emotional and challenging situation.

“Residential aged-care providers are reeling from the cuts by this government. In July, we received the news about the cutting of the dementia and severe behaviour supplement, which stripped $800,000 from our budget,

and now the pre-entry leave subsidy. �is is now close to $1 million that has been callously ripped from our budget,” he said.

Hobsons Bay libraries will have visitors of an unusual kind this week as children get up close and personal with snakes, lizards and other critters.

As part of Hobsons Bay council’s Summer by the Sea program, Andrew Wegener, of Australian Wildlife Lectures, is bringing his showcase of native wildlife to Altona and Altona Meadows libraries.

Children are being encouraged to observe and handle the animals to learn about their needs and gain respect for di�erent living things.

Summer by the Sea helps raise awareness of local conservation issues and promotes the municipality’s coastal environment.

Mobil supports the interactive shows, with Altona re�nery manager Andrew Warrell saying they raise awareness about native wildlife in our own backyard.

“�is event provides an important opportunity for suburban children to interact with native wildlife, such as snakes, turtles and frogs, and learn about these creatures that live right alongside us in the local area,” he said.

�e show is at Altona library today and tomorrow, and Altona Meadows library on Friday, running from 10am-3pm.

Williamstown’s shipyard could shed hundreds of jobs by April unless it obtains more work from the Commonwealth, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews warned last week.

Mr Andrews said BAE Systems had briefed him that it would begin laying o� hundreds of workers in just a few months unless it received assignments very soon.

A man involved in smuggling cocaine and methamphetamine from Mexico in bottles of beer has lost a bid to appeal his conviction.

Adrian Franze was sentenced to 17 years’ jail, with a minimum of 13 years, for his role in importing the bottles, which were stored at Sunshine and Yarraville.

His co-o�ender, Erol Ramazanoglu, pleaded guilty to identical charges, while a third co-o�ender �ed and hasn’t been located.

Franze sought to appeal his conviction on grounds that the Supreme Court jury had been misdirected about his criminal responsibility and about whether he knew the drugs exceeded the commercial quantity.

In refusing to grant leave to appeal, three Supreme Court appeal judges ruled there was no misdirection and that the consignment was almost 200 times the commercial quantity of methamphetamine and more than seven times the commercial quantity of cocaine.

In August 2013, Franze, then 33, was jailed a�er being found guilty of attempting to possess 14 kilograms of cocaine and 133 kilograms of methamphetamine.

Australian Federal Police intercepted the drugs’ arrival on October 14, 2011, and �lled 1100 similar bottles with water before attaching fresh Mexican beer labels to them. Listening devices were also hidden in the consignment.

Ten days later, Franze and a co-o�ender took delivery of the reconstituted consignment at a warehouse they operated in Westside Drive,

Laverton North. According to the Crown, Franze could be heard arguing about the drugs with his co-o�enders, making statements about not wanting to drive the van.

Franze’s defence was that these comments referred to him not wanting to drive the van to Altona Gate Shopping Centre as the bottles might be damaged in the underground car park.

Police tracked the bottles being moved from the Laverton North warehouse to a unit in Fairbairn Road, Sunshine.

Franze gave evidence that on October 25, 2011, with his co-o�enders becoming concerned about police surveillance, Ramazanoglu had intended to go to the Sunshine unit to empty the bottles down the drain.

�e next day, 43 of the 46 boxes containing the bottles were moved to Ramazanoglu’s home in Roberts Road, Yarraville.

A listening device recorded him opening bottles, pouring out liquids and discussing how to dispose of the bottles.

�at night, police raided Ramazanoglu’s home. He was caught trying to eat paper which had instructions from Franze written on it.

�e following day, Franze handed himself in to police.

�e group provides good-quality donated items to asylum seekers and organises special events to bring them together with the broader community.

Organising through Facebook, the group collects donated furniture, food, clothing and other items and delivers them to asylum seeker families living in Melbourne’s west.

�e school Dance Habit asked its families for Christmas hamper foodstu�s, which were then ra�ed at an end-of-year concert. A�er six weeks, the dance school had raised more than $600 to pass on.

Dance Habit director Megan Jessop said her vision to run a professional business with a

community-minded approach had come about thanks to the generosity of local families.

“Dance Habit is committed to the inner west community and we will continue to support our own families as well as organisations like the West Welcome Wagon,” Ms Jessop said.

West Welcome Wagon founder Mia McGregor said the support of Dance Habit made all the di�erence to her vision of charity.

Protest as pub fallsAustralia’s oldest three-storey pub in Williamstown is coming down. Built about 1850, the Oriental is Williamstown’s second-oldest building and believed to be the state’s �rst three-storey hotel. Evolve Development is demolishing it to build a six-storey, 83-dwelling apartment block as part of much bigger development plans. Save Williamstown members are protesting outside the on-site sales of�ce at noon on Saturday.

Polluters �nedTwo Brooklyn businesses have each been �ned more than $7000 for failing to minimise dust coming from their premises. The Environment Protection Authority �ned J&M Ridol� Transport Services and Butler Freight Services $7381 each for not complying with pollution abatement notices. Accused stalker in courtA Braybrook man accused of �lming two women through a bedroom window at Footscray has been remanded to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates court on Thursday. Police were called to a Ballarat Road home early on January 3 after reports of a peeping Tom and arrested a man nearby in Jamieson Avenue. A 37-year-old was charged with two counts of stalking and one count of up-skirting from a mobile device.

Seaworks at Williamstown will host the largest display of American Civil War memorabilia seen in Melbourne as part of a three-day maritime festival during the Australia Day long weekend.

�e event will coincide with the 150th anniversary of the arrival of a Confederate ship in Melbourne in 1865.

�ere was debate at the time whether to call the crew of the CSS Shenandoah pirates or heroes.

�e Shenandoah was allowed into Williamstown to make repairs to its propeller bearings, which had been damaged in a storm.

Opinion was divided over whether to celebrate the ship’s o�cers and crew, who had been tasked with sinking Yankee whaling ships because they were �ghting the north.

While the US consul in Melbourne fumed at the presence of a Confederate ship known for burning its whaling �eets, the public was in awe.

�e Shenandoah’s o�cers, under the command of James Waddell, prided themselves on not harming any of the 1053 people they took captive from whaling ships at sea.

�e Australia Day exhibition will include photographs, maps, documents, uniforms, weapons and a civil war sailor’s hammock.

�e exhibition is the centrepiece of the Seaworks Maritime Festival, which will run from January 24 to 26.

Taking place at the Sun �eatre on Wednesday, February 11, I Heart Fashion will showcase designs from seven of the suburb’s clothing stores.

Proceeds from the sale of tickets will go directly to the care service, which provides 24-hour support to people with incurable illnesses and their carers and families.

Festival manager Megan Darling said Mercy Palliative Care deserved to be celebrated.

“We really want to bring recognition to Mercy Palliative Care and the work that they do,” she said. “�ey’re an incredible group who

really help people at the hardest point in their lives.”

Mercy Health fundraising manager Shannon Gilmore said the festival’s help for the care service was wonderful.

“�ese donations will help us provide �nancial support for patients who fall through the gap,” she said.

Hobsons Bay Toy Library at Newport is looking for donations of unwanted toys as families clear up clutter a�er Christmas.

HBTL president Fiona Ward said many children were overwhelmed with toys over the Christmas period, and families were o�en short of storage space.

“Most toy libraries will accept donations of toys that are clean and generally in good working condition,” she said. “�ese are added to the toy library collection for other children to borrow.”

�e library, at the Newport Gardens Early Years Centre in Maddox Road, accepts most toys except for licensed characters.

Ms Ward said becoming a toy library member was an ideal way to manage the number of

toys in the home and gave children access to a greater range of toys. She said it also taught children good values.

“Children come to appreciate the idea of borrowing and returning things, and parents also like the idea of being able to try something out before buying,” Ms Ward said.

HBTL is a not-for-pro�t organisation that services Hobsons Bay and the inner west. Toys for loan include large outdoor toys, bikes and ride-ons, dress-ups and puzzles. �e library is open on �ursdays, 9am-1pm, and Saturdays, 9am-3pm, with membership starting at $70 a year. A man has been jailed for opening fake bank accounts across Melbourne in a trail of fraud, which ended a�er he tried to draw down a $187,000 cheque deposited in Williamstown.

Diea Kardan Sayhood was sentenced by the County Court to two and a half years jail with a minimum of 15 months.

Between November 18, 2013, and January 10, 2014, Sayhood opened seven bank accounts using false identi�cation. By closing an account and transferring the balance into a new account in the same name, he managed to bypass the usual ANZ Bank practice of waiting several days for a cheque to clear.

On February 6, 2014, Sayhood went to the ANZ bank at Williamstown and deposited $300 plus a National Australia Bank cheque for $187,700 that he had drawn on a Keilor account he had opened.

�e next day, he went to a bank in Williamstown and closed the account he had opened at Keilor, transferring the balance into an account he had opened in Airport West. �e funds were transferred as cleared funds.

Over the next two days, Sayhood proceeded to drain most of the money from this account, mainly in foreign exchange at places like Travelex. He also made purchases at jewellery shops of up to $9000.

It was a pattern that Sayhood repeated from late 2013 to early 2014 at Airport West, Altona North, Coburg, Croydon, Keilor, Knox and Parkmore.

But in his bid to empty his account of $187,000 deposited in Williamstown, Sayhood came undone when a withdrawal on February 10, 2014, at Melbourne Airport Travelex was refused.

He was subsequently interviewed by police, who found he had false identi�cation in three di�erent names.

None of the money has been recovered.

A comedy feature �lm that was written in Footscray and �lmed in Williamstown has won a major award in the United States.

�e Heckler, depicting the life of a stand-up comedian who becomes possessed by the spirit of a jealous heckler, won the ‘best ensemble’ award at the LA Comedy Festival.

�e �lm follows the comedian’s journey to reclaim his body before his career falls apart due to the jealous one.

Produced by �e Comedy Cartel, a partnership of writer Steve Mitchell and director Ben Plazzer, �e Heckler was �e Heckler was �e Hecklerwell received by �lmmakers and comedy a�cionados at the LA festival.

�e script was adapted from a short story written �ve years ago by Mitchell, who developed the storyline into a feature-length screenplay.

�e actors chosen boosted the chances for the �lm going up to the award, Mitchell said. “�ere’s a great mix and we have some nice

cameos from comedians like Tony Martin, Je� Green and others.

“We spent a lot of time thinking about the best actors to play these roles in the �lm and we’re really happy with who we chose; they’re all fantastic and worked so well together.”

Consumer A�airs Victoria has urged residents to be wary of travelling conmen following reports of two men o�ering bitumen repairs in the Little River area.

In both cases, residents were approached by the men saying a job down the road had been cancelled and suggesting they could do work at a cheap price.

A�er becoming suspicious, residents refused to hand over money.

“�ey may even get on the roof and actually remove tiles, looking like they are doing some work, but then once they have the cash they will leave and never come back, leaving a gaping hole.”

Consumer A�airs Victoria director Claire Noone said travelling conmen usually demanded cash up front for jobs such as asphalting, roo�ng work, painting and gardening, then disappeared leaving poor- quality or incomplete work.

Leading Senior Constable McDonald said residents were typically approached by two men who claimed to have noticed damage to their roof while doing repairs on a neighbouring house.

“�ey will then make up a quote and barter with the home owner for a cash deal to �x it,” he said.

Julia Gillard’s former Altona home looks surprisingly similar to the way she le� it just over a year ago.

�e buyers of the former prime minister’s Medford Street dwelling have turned it into a Gillard shrine, even furnishing it with replica beds and couches mimicking those belonging toMs Gillard when she lived in the house with partner Tim Mathieson.

Chinese mortgage broker Zheng Wang and his wife, Jian Wang, bought the three-bedroom brick house at auction in December, 2013, for $921,000 – about $250,000 more than its expected sale price.

Ms Wang, who in 2003, at age 16, became one of the youngest-ever female International Baccalaureates, was cleared for a job with Ms Gillard’s ministerial o�ce but gave up the chance in order to help her father in his business.

She said the family had sought information from selling agent and Ms Gillard’s long-time friend, Anna Grech, of Jas Stephens, in a bid to replace the furniture with pieces matching those owned by Ms Gillard. “To the extent that we could, because obviously we won’t be able to �nd the furniture that’s exactly the same,” Ms Wang said.

In a walk-in closet in the master bedroom, a pair of brown ugg boots, once worn by Ms Gillard and given to the family, takes pride of place.

Pictures of Ms Gillard with her family members and heads of state adorn the walls. On one bedside table is a picture of Ms Gillard and her tearful father, taken when she was elected.

A copy of Ms Gillard’s book is signed, “Jian, I wish you much joy in Medford Street”.

In the entrance hall is a blown-up picture of Ms Gillard with Ms Wang’s beaming parents taken at a function in China in 2009.

Ms Gillard for breaking the ‘glass ceiling’ to become the country’s �rst female prime minister.

She said her father wanted her mother to sign the sale contract so the property would pass “from woman to woman”.

Ms Wang hesitantly added that her family was “very fond” of the Labor Party because it was Bob Hawke who allowed Chinese students, including her father, to come to Australia a�er the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989.

“He is forever indebted to them,” Ms Wang said.

“I suppose we all are because our lives would be very di�erent now if we had to stay in China.”

She said the family was Christian but still believed in the Chinese superstition that a successful person le� behind a positive vibe that is auspicious.

Ms Wang said she would be happy for the house to be placed on a heritage register and preserved for future generations.

“Essentially, we’re trying to do that in a more private way,” she said. “We are trying to conserve the house the way it is.”

Maribyrnong city council will host Australia Day celebrations on Monday, January 26, at the Coulson Gardens.

Mayor Nam Quach has invited residents to join him on the banks of the Maribyrnong River to celebrate with entertainment and activities to keep kids entertained.

An elderly Maribyrnong couple is devastated a�er a concrete stork that resided in their front yard for 60 years was stolen.

Slim and Beverley Shearer noticed the stork was missing a�er they returned to their Yarraville home a�er a day out on December 31.

�e 120-centimetre decorative stork had been in their yard since they bought the property and had become a part of their home, Mrs Shearer said.

“�is has been our �rst and only home. We purchased it in 1955, and the stork has been there ever since. We feel as though we’ve lost a part of our family.”

�e couple’s granddaughter, Meg Shearer, feels the loss, too.

“For something to have been untouched, unmoved for over 50 years and just taken without a thought spared for how the owners feel is such a disappointment,” she said. “To think people can walk on to your property and take things as they please … is a message to everyone not to have sentimental or valuable items in your front yard.”

■ Happy New Year and welcome to another jam-packed year of sport in the west. Sadly, I start the year paying tribute to two western suburbs stalwarts who passed away during the holiday period – Gwen Buckingham and Lindsay Howarth. Gwen, and the Buckingham family, were heavily involved in the foundation of the Hoppers Crossing Football and Cricket clubs. Gwen’s husband Ian was one of the club’s pioneers, her son Shane is the football club president and grandson Ryan is one of the rising stars of the Warriors seniors. Gwen’s contribution to the club was enormous and she will be sadly missed. Lindsay Howarth, who played more than 300 games for Spotswood Football Club, was awarded WRFL life membership last September. The Howarth name has been at Spotty for decades – Lindsay’s father Ken played in the 1946 under-19 premiership side with my father. Lindsay was one of those people who just did whatever needed doing, whether it was coaching juniors, running water or helping out.

■ One of the joys of my summer job at SEN is catching up with some great sportspeople. Last week I spoke with Ken Eastwood, a Footscray cricket legend, Victorian Shef�eld Shield player and a man who played one test for Australia. Eastwood played in the controversial Sydney test when the English team walked off. On YouTube it is known as the ‘John Snow incident’. The things I took from Eastwood in the interview were gems. The 79-year-old Point Cook resident still umpires in a local competition, and though he played only the one test, he has two baggy green caps. It seems when they gave him one to try on for size they neglected to ask for its return. Being a good western suburbs boy he did not point out their error and put it in his kit bag.

■ Australia Day will again see Pennell Reserve transformed into an elite athletics venue for the running of the Maribyrnong Gift. The day kicks off at noon and will include kid’s races, a barbecue, stalls and market tents. There will be a bookie on track. ■ There is lots of footy news to share, though I am mindful there is still time for more changes. I am never convinced of what club’s say until the clearances open and we really see who is going were. I have heard that a lot of Deer Park premiership players have moved on.

�e A’s were on the wrong end of a number of lopsided scorelines with heavy losses coming against top-four clubs Werribee, Williamstown and Yarraville.

�e bright spot for the A’s is having two bowlers – Daniel Reed-Sharry (six wickets) and Cooper Mitchell (�ve) – in the competition’s top 10.

Williamstown Wolves are occupying dangerous territory in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 1 standings.

�e freefalling Wolves hold the second-worst record in the entire competition with just four wins a�er Sunday’s punishing 10-0 loss to Waverley.

�e fact the bottom two teams will be relegated at the end of the season is not lost on Wolves coach Dean Marnell.

A sense of urgency is needed if the Wolves are to avoid the drop.

“Every game matters,” he said. “We’ve got some winnable games coming up so the ball is still in our court.

“We’ve got to �nd a way to get back to what we were doing earlier in the season.”

It is hard to believe this is the same Wolves out�t that toppled premiership-contending clubs Melbourne and Blackburn inside a week.

�at was the middle of November and the Wolves have not won since, enduring a bumpy ride with six straight losses.

Wolves’ pitch black hole“We had a good run of form there when

we beat Melbourne and Blackburn in the one week,” Marnell said. “If we can �nd that form again, we’ll be right.

“Our guys are keen … they were at the ballpark getting work in even in 42-degree heat last week.

“I didn’t call training – these guys took it upon themselves.

“�ey’re willing to do the work, but it’s just not happening for us at the moment.”

A problem area for the Wolves is their leaking of runs.

Pitching was the cornerstone of their back-to-back division 2 titles in the past two summers, but that prowess has so far not transferred to the top level.

Veteran David Asp and recruit Andrew Russell have been solid, while youngster Nathan Rogers is showing promising signs, but the depth pitchers have underperformed.

“Our pitching has been our downfall this year,” Marnell said.

“Jason Lester has really struggled, Daniel Chircop is a work in progress and Josh Lee

hasn’t been as sharp as he usually is. We’ve been pretty disappointing in that department and we’ve got to pick it up.”

In the batters box, Andrew Russell has delivered as promised despite a constant battle with arm injuries.

Russell has 17 hits, second only to Aaron Green, to go with team-highs in RBIs (12), base on balls (nine, equal with Darren Pollock) and home runs (�ve).

“He’s been outstanding,” Marnell said. “He’s had arm issues all year and there’s times when he throws that he’s not 100 per cent but he still throws his heart out.

“If he’s healthy, he’s the best player in the competition. But he’s restricted with his arm and he’s really frustrated with that.

“He’s �tted into the club both on and o� the �eld.”

�e Wolves get no respite – Essendon, the team with the best record in the league, is their menu twice in three days next week.

Meanwhile, the undermanned Newport Rams were hammered 19-0 by Melbourne away on Sunday.

Nhan Hoang isn’t daunted by a busy schedule. �e 26-year-old has quali�ed for this year’s taekwondo world championships in an incredible �ve events.

Hoang booked his place on the Australian team a�er a dominant performance at the All Australian International Taekwondo Federation national championships which were held in Melbourne last month.

�e Yarraville resident won gold in the individual sparring, individual pattern, team sparring, team power and self-defence routine and will now represent Australia in those events next August in Korea.

Competing on the big stage is nothing new for Hoang, who has made himself a regular feature in some of the taekwondo world’s biggest competitions.

Hoang has represented Australia six times. His biggest wins have included gold medals

in the international martial arts games in 2008 and 2012 and a bronze medal at the ITF taekwondo senior world championship in Bulgaria last year.

Locally, Hoang trains at the International Taekwon-do Defence Force in Sunshine North where he is tutored by national coach Danny Kordanovski.

“I never thought I would get this far in the sport,” Hoang said. “When I started I just wanted to give it a go. I didn’t think I would ever compete in world championships.

“When the opportunity came up, Danny asked me if I wanted to do it and we just decided to. I didn’t think much of it actually. I just take it all as it comes. Competing in all those big events, they have all been great experiences.”

Hoang won’t be the only member of International Taekwon-do Defence Force to battle at the world championships.

�e club has a staggering six athletes set to compete at the event with Emily Nguyen, Hoa Le, Kevin Hoang, Tony Nguyen and Phillip Le also qualifying.

“Our club standard is so high,” Hoang said. “We had seven guys trying out for the world championships and six of us made it. Our club’s standard is amazing. It is good for training as well; we all help and train each other.”

Further highlighting the club’s dominance in the sport, the International Taekwon-do Defence Force won 31 gold medals, 15 silver medals and nine bronze medals at the national championships. With the world titles eight months away, Hoang says his next goal is to “train his guts out” to ensure he’ll be ready when the time comes.

AthleticsEleni Gilden made a �ying start to the Athletics Victoria’s �rst shield competition for the year with victory in the women’s 400 metres at Nunawading on Saturday. Gilden’s 59.57 seconds edged out her sister, Rosamond (60.71), and Williamstown teammate Karoline Curtis (62.61). Celeste Mucci claimed wins in the under-18 100-metre hurdles in 14.27 seconds and the under-18 long jump with 5.31 metres. Sweeney Preston ran a personal best of 51.27 seconds in the under-18 400 metres, while Cosimo Mucci had the best time of 11.50 seconds in the under-18 100 metres.

FootballThe bulk of Williamstown’s list for the upcoming VFL season has been settled with 13 new faces and a high retention rate from the side that reached the �nals last season. Heading the list of recruits are former AFL-listed players Taylor Hine, who played with the Gold Coast Suns and North Melbourne, and Sam Dunell, who played at St Kilda. Western Jets graduates Liam McMahon, Billy Myers and Caleb Sullivan have received contracts, along with Williamstown CYMS premiership players Tom Johnstone and Ash Heaver.

CricketThe Williamstown and District Cricket Association under-21 representative side is in the last four of the Neil Wright Shield. WDCA will face Diamond Valley CA in a one-day game on Sunday at a venue still to be announced with the winner to advance to the �nal.
