El balneario es un lugarturstico y es escenario de competencias internacionales desurf,siendo conocido elMundialde Longboardque se realiza en el verano de cada ao. Huanchaco es famoso mundialmente

por los legendarioscaballitos de totorausados para la navegacin y la pesca desde el tiempode los milenarios mochicas y tambin de los chimes. An en la actualidad los pescadores deHuanchaco continan con esta ancestral tradicin.

El nombre de Huanchaco viene de Guaukocha(hermosa laguna con peces dorados). Hoy esun lugar tradicional y un pintoresco balneario, parada obligatoria para los turistas que visitanla provincia deTrujillo.11En la parte alta del balneario se levanta una iglesia colonial. En estaiglesia se venera a la SantsimaVirgen del Socorro.

Toponimia[editar]

Jorge Zevallos Quiones sostiene que Guanchaco es un vocablo yunga y no tendra unatraduccin etimolgica. Por otra parte, Gua-Kocha, palabra quechua que significa lagunahermosa, nombre que se remonta segn diversas crnicas al ao 1200. Existen tambin otrasdenominaciones como Huaycocha o Guanchaque, que con el correr de los tiempos y el habla

popular dio como resultado la actual denominacin de Huanchaco.12

En la pocaincaicaal conquistar a los chimes, stos fueron trasladados como mitimaes a sersubyugados en las alturas andinas y por ltimo arrojados al lago Titicaca; pero su habilidad ydominio del agua hace que se erijan como los Uros, siembren la totora, dominen el lagoformando islas con terrapln de totora y tengan lugar donde vivir actualmente. Es evidente losrasgos mochicas, sus costumbres y su alimentacin a base de pescado.

En elsiglo XIXHuanchaco era una caleta de indios pescadores que abastecan a la nobleza deTrujillo.

En elsiglo XXen 1960 Huanchaco y sus autoridades: alcalde, prroco y comisario agradecana los visitantes oficiales con un gran almuerzo solo a base de pescado (1)aperitivo (2) Ceviche(3) Chupe (4) Sudado y (5) postre, con una sazn tan agradable que haba que averiguarcuales eran los secretos culinarios. Tradicin tambin muy conocida en el Puerto deMalabrigo (Chicama).

En elsiglo XXHuanchaco es uno de los balnearios ms hermosos de la Ruta Moche, donde

destaca sus platos tpicos a base de pescado y mariscos que engalana al turista visitante.

El ao 2012 Huanchaco ha sido aprobado como unaReserva Mundial de Surfpor laorganizacin Save The Waves Coalition. Esta designacin es la primera para una localidadlatinoamricay la quinta en el mundo. Huanchaco es conocido por su consistencia, olas

fludas y tambin por su antigua historiaprecolombinade un pueblo que tiene una largatradicin y convivencia con el mar. La cultura ocenica de Huanchaco es tambin acreditada

por ser el lugar de nacimiento delCaballito de totoraembarcacin usada para la pesca y unode los ms tempranos artefactos desurfconocidos en la humanidad, usados para surcar lasolas para trabajo o para diversin.20

Incrustadas en la arena reposan enhiestas embarcaciones de totora.21Bordeando la playa, a lolejos una lnea verde casi imperceptible. De all se sigue extrayendo el material utilizadodurante tres a cinco milenios22para la elaboracin de las rsticas naves. Son los totorales, loshumedales, los balsares. En la antigua lengua de la zona se les llama "wachakes", palabra que

puede traducirse como "ojo de agua" y que dicen da su nombre a este mgico lugar:Huanchaco, uno de los ltimos reductos delcaballitos de totora.

El elemento representativo de esta antigua tradicin es el uso delcaballito de totora,herencia

fundamental de las culturas Mochica y Chim que se ha mantenido a lo largo del tiempo yconstituye un smbolo representativo de su identidad, con un insondable valor histrico.

Tupes el nombre nativo antiguo del caballito de totora. Los pescadores adultos surcaban olasal regresar de sus faenas de pesca, y con seguridad, sus hijos surcaban olas con sus tups paradiverstirse en sus momentos libres. Por esto, se dice que los primeros surfers, surfeadores,

tablistas o surcadores de olas del mundo, son los pescadores de Huanchaco y del norte del

Per. Incluso en la actualidad es posible ver en este balneario el espectculo que crean los

pescadores y los surfers locales al surcar olas en milenarios tups o caballitos de totora y enmodernas tablas de fibra de vidrio. Una aproximacin antropolgica y etnogrfica de este

plazaubicada en la orilla de la playa, se interna homogneamente hacia el interior del mar,rematando en su parte final con un espacio formado por dos glorietas. Su forma lineal vara

por la inclusin de una plataforma, adosada a su extremo derecho, al costado de las glorietas ydispuesta en un nivel ms bajo para el fcil acceso de los pescadores que suelen realizar sustradicionales faenas en el lugar.25

A lo largo del malecn de Huanchaco se encuentra una gran nmero de restaurantes queofrecen platos tpicos de la zona a base de los ms variados pescados y mariscos. Los Humedales de Huanchaco, de donde losmochicasychimesextraan la materia primapara fabricar los milenarioscaballitos de totora,an en la actualidad los pescadores deHuanchaco continan con esta legendaria tradicin; se observa muy cerca la orilla del mar y alo lejos el mtico balneario de HuanchacoArtculo principal:Pantanos de Huanchaco

Conocido tambin como balsares de Huanchacoes un parque ecolgico que se encuentramuy cerca de las orillas del mar y cerca de la playaEl Silencioen el noroeste de Huanchaco.Este parque ecolgico contiene principalmente reservas detotora,de las que se extrae lamateria prima para la fabricacin de los milenarioscaballitos de totorautilizados desde lapoca de los mochicas para la pesca artesanal.27

Carnaval de Huanchaco,este carnaval se celebra desde principios delsiglo XX,lospobladores de Huanchaco realizaban un carnaval emulando al carnaval veneciano

famoso por esa poca, con el pasar de los aos y las nuevas generaciones pas a serorganizado por elClub Huanchaco,consta de varias actividades entre ellas lacoronacin de la reina, campeonato de surf, fiesta delluau,creatividad en la arena,campeonatos de caballito de totora, el desfile de carnaval entre otros; el ao 2012 elcorso del carnaval se llev a cabo el 25 defebrero.28
