Lincolnshire Music Service Champions BBC Music Ten Pieces initiative
The aim of this exciting new initiative is to provide a stimulus for music and arts education in primary schools throughout the country, linked together by the Ten Pieces theme.
Starting with special screenings to schools in cinemas across the county in October 2104 and ending with a major celebratory event in Summer 2015 – Ten pieces will open up the world of classical music to children and encourage them to develop their own creative responses to the pieces through music, dance or digital art.
BBC learning will be providing educational resources on the Ten Pieces website to enable teachers
with little knowledge about classical music to run some engaging lessons. These will include online clips of the Ten Pieces film; recordings of the repertoire; arrangements of the pieces to suit different abilities; and information about the composers. In addition, BBC Orchestras will be running some exiting ‘Takeover Days’ in schools.
As a champion, Lincolnshire Music Service (LMS) will be building on the children’s interest and excitement stimulated by the Ten Pieces theme, helping them find out more about classical music and further develop their creative responses.
LMS intends to work with the Ten Pieces by: using the repertoire as a stimulus for whole class ensemble teaching and singing lessons; encouraging secondary school orchestras to perform Ten Pieces concerts for primary schools and introducing children to orchestral instruments; running training for teachers on how to develop creative and compositional work; holding amateur orchestra concerts featuring the Ten Pieces; screening the Ten Pieces at LMS Music Centres across the county and linking with Lincolnshire Music and Arts Education Hub partners encouraging them to work with schools as part of the project.
The BBC will be staging a number of concerts in the national and regions with the BBC Orchestras in summer 2015, to give children the opportunity to hear the music live and join in with some of the pieces. In addition, LMS will hold celebratory concerts giving the children the chance to perform their own compositions and dances and showcase their digital work – exciting times ahead!

‘Folk with Fiddles’ Shindig 2014/15
Ermine Music is proud to welcome Sue Hollingworth to Lincoln to lead a choir workshop on the 12 June from 7.00pm – 9.00pm in the Church Hall of St. John the Baptist, Ermine, Lincoln
Sue is one of the country’s leading lights in music education. She holds a Churchill fellowship for her work with choirs and was awarded “Choir Master of the Year” by the Gramophone Magazine in 2010. Sue’s choirs have won BBC3 Choir of the Year, taken part in the BBC Proms and travelled to Sydney to take part in the Olympic Torch Processions. Sue has worked for the National Youth Choirs of Scotland and Great Britain and is a guest conductor for Leeds Lieder and The National Centre for Early Music.
Sue is now coming to Lincoln for ONE NIGHT ONLY to share her incredible expertise with the community. This is the perfect opportunity for anyone who leads singing of any kind to learn new rounds, part songs and warm ups to take back to their choir, as well as to meet like-minded people and swap tips and tricks.
Thanks to a very generous subsidy from the Tudor Trust, this workshop is totally free to anyone who has a connection to Lincoln’s Ermine Estate*, otherwise anyone is welcome to take part at £5.00 per head.

The Lincolnshire Folk with Fiddles Celebration is a unique performance opportunity for all young violin, viola, cello, bass and harp players in Lincolnshire to come together to form an enormous, high quality String Orchestra.
Participation will include the following:
Celebration Pack - including the specially arranged music and access to an mp3 recording to practise with. Celebration Day - Rehearsal Sunday 9 November Concert - Saturday 22 November, 7pm, Grantham Meres Leisure Centre
The Orchestra, together with Lincolnshire’s Youth Cello Ensemble and String Chamber Orchestra will perform an exciting selection of specially arranged music. In addition, professional dance groups will be performing to some of the music, adding a stunning visual dimension to the varied programme of music.
Follow up events will be held in March 2015 to explore the collaboration of live music with moving & spectacular dance choreography.

Transported is an arts programme based in Boston Borough and South Holland, funded by Creative People and Places from Arts Council England to increase the number of people engaging with and participating in the arts. Lots of events and activities are planned over the summer – here are a few highlights!
Free Creating Festival Costumes Workshops

Boy Meets Girl – Zest Theatre
Zest Theatre are a local theatre company based in Lincoln. Their work is inspired by the needs, lives and imaginations of those under the age of twenty five. Transported has commissioned Zest to deliver a project called ‘Boy meets Girl’ which will be performed in market places across South Holland and Boston Borough. The performance will involve headsets that will lead the audience members through the market square allowing them to interact with either character for as long or a little as they so wish.

Fen Boy – Strangeface Theatre
Strangeface are a prestigious mask and puppet theatre company Transported has commissioned to create ‘Fen Boy’, a story based on Lincolnshire’s principle themes of agriculture, horticulture and food processing. Using specially commissioned music, the piece will be suitable for all the family and will be performed using a haulage trailer as a stage and will travel from community to community in South Holland and Boston Borough from Wednesday 27 August to Saturday 31 August inclusive.

The last few places are available on the Music Teachers’ Conference on Wednesday 11 June, 2014.
Renowned VOCES8 will lead the opening session through an interactive keynote with ideas to take straight back to the classroom.
The day will provide an exciting opportunity to network, support and challenge all music educators within Lincolnshire.
The Online Primary Music Toolkit and the Yellow Belly Songbook 2 will be launched and there will be an opportunity to meet with Lincolnshire Music Service Managers for advice before the September tuition booking deadline of Friday 20 June.
In addition, there will be a range of valuable workshops available in the afternoon.

EMPower, a new project from soundLINCS for young music producers will hold its first session during the half term holidays on the 27 May.
EMPower is a free learning and development project for 11-16 year olds which gives young people the opportunity to collaborate with their peers and work alongside professional music producers to develop new skills and techniques.
Music producer Eddy Mentzel, otherwise known as AudioJunkie, said of the project; “music producers often work in isolation, which limits the possibility of working collaboratively.
EMPower is a great opportunity for young producers to meet one other, work together, and raise the profile of their creative work.”
The initial session will be an opportunity to meet and collaborate with other young music producers, and obtain advice and guidance from an industry expert. It will also give the chance to explore and shape how this project continues, so participants should take a moment to consider their future availability and ideal times to meet in preparation.
The session will take place at the soundHOUSE, 18 St Martins Lane, Lincoln, LN2 1HY between 10 AM and 4 PM. There are drop in spaces for those who have not already signed up to the project or any interested parties can contact soundLINCS on 01522 510073, [email protected] or www.soundlincs.org to sign up for the project or find out more.
The programme is free to take part in and participants are asked to bring their own lunch as refreshments cannot be provided.

The Boston Regional Festival 2014 was a huge celebration of youth music-making featuring 21 performances of jazz, orchestral, rock, folk and world, wind and brass, pop, choral and chamber music from across the county.
Three ensembles produced dynamic performances leading to an invitation to perform at Music for Youth’s National Festival in Birmingham in July: Haven High Academy 6th Form Choir, The Pylons Folk Group and The Big Green, Grantham Kings Jazz Combo.

Pupils from two local primary schools gained inspiration for a music project marking the centenary of the First World War at a special day hosted by regional orchestra Sinfonia Viva, Lincoln Drill Hall and the Museum of Lincolnshire Life.

of a music education project led by Viva entitled ‘Dark Clouds are Smouldering into Red’ – inspired by Siegfried Sassoon’s 1918 poem ‘How To Die’.
They worked with Viva musicians to compose their own songs and music which they performed alongside the Orchestra at Lincoln Drill Hall in March. The performance included professional dance, choreographed by Tom
Dale forming part of the Drill Hall’s week of celebrations marking its 10th anniversary.
Sinfonia Viva composer and workshop leader James Redwood explained: “The day was a great success in inspiring the young people to think more about the feelings and emotions of war both from the point of view of the soldiers and their families at home”

75 children from 8 primary schools in the Boston area performed in the 10th annual Woodwind and Brass Festival at Haven High Academy in May. They had all been rehearsing the music in their instrumental lessons since January and came together on the day for an afternoon rehearsal and evening concert. For many of the musicians this was their first ever public performance. The programme included a wide variety of music with many items composed or arranged especially for this event by Lincolnshire Music Service teachers.
“A superb evening showcasing the amazing musical talent of the primary school children of Boston! All made possible through the encouragement and patience of our wonderful Music Service Team” Emma Schofield, teacher, Boston West Academy.
As part of its 15th birthday celebration, B15, soundLINCS, a major East Midlands music development charity, staged a spectacular music event on Saturday 3rd May at the Epic Centre, Lincolnshire Showground which saw over 300 musicians and singers perform to a worldwide audience.
Following a day of rehearsals, the players aged between 7 and 85 performed a new composition based on the traditional Lincolnshire Folk tune ‘Lost Lady Found’. The performance featured 15 different musical genres, including Orchestra, Folk, Rock, Jazz, Choral, Music Technology, and Brass Band and saw a huge variety of instruments including guitars, clarinets, accordians, a gamelan, a harp, voices, iPads and unique, hand-made instruments.
Nikki-Kate Heyes MBE, soundLINCS CEO commented “Our B15 event has been an incredible experience for everyone involved and we’re delighted that so many people could share the day with us to celebrate an amazing 15 years of making community music across the East Midlands.”

BOSTON AREA WOODWIND AND BRASS FESTIVAL
soundLINCS’ birthday celebrations close with unique music event
SonophiliaA brand new festival of sound and music is happening across Lincoln from 23 to 26 October 2014.
This major new event promises something for everyone, with performances and experiences from Sound Installation and street events to open-air rock and pop.
Professional development for audio practitioners from GCSE and sixth-form students onwards, at the Sonophilia Conference, will take place at Bishop Grosseteste University on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 October. The Conference offers talks, seminars, workshops and performances from outstanding audio professionals, from Lincolnshire and elsewhere.
Sonophilia opens with the Big Ran-Tan, after school on Thursday 23 October. Bring your instruments, your voices, or anything you can make a noise with. Come in a crowd or by yourself: everybody is welcome and wanted! We’ll be processing through Lincoln, from the High Street to Castle Square, where we’ll gather to open our programme.
