An Evening withPat MethenyThe jazz guitarist brings abrand new band and a brandnew set of music to the Hall.

The sheer invention andenergy of Pat Metheny’smusic continues to shine,always searching for newsounds and ideas whileretaining the melodic forceand free-wheeling, joyousdrive that’s been his hallmarksince he first emerged in the1970s.

In this new quartet, hisunmistakeable playing style ismatched with two talentsfrom the new generation,with UK pianist GwilymSimcock joining the brilliantbassist Linda Oh and long-time Metheny sidekick,drummer Antonio Sanchez, ina band that positively exudesclass.

This line-up is soon to releasean album on NonesuchRecords, the music fromwhich will be performed onthe night.

We’re delighted to present our 2017winter edition of Hull Jazz Festival.We’re back with a line-up packed withUS and UK stars to celebrate our 25thanniversary and as part of Hull UK Cityof Culture 2017.

The US contingent is led by 20 Grammyaward winning guitar superstar PatMetheny, who’s making a rare visitoutside London to play our headlineshow. And explosive Brooklyn horn-and-percussion trio Moon Hooch blendvirtuosic jazz, groovy funk and pulse-pounding electronic dance music topack a real punch on the dancefloor.

The special performance by the UK’shottest jazz stars GoGo Penguin is a realcoup for us. They close the festival witha performance of their exhilarating newlive score to Godfrey Reggio’s cultmasterpiece Koyaanisqatsi. A real treatfor jazz fans and movie fans alike.

If great singers are your thing, check outDavid McAlmont and GwynethHerbert, with a new take on the iconicpop songs of Dusty Springfield and

Shirley Bassey. We also have the jazzclassics interpreted by Zoe Gilby andsoul singing sensation Roachford.

Saxophonist Andy Sheppardhas been a constant presenceon the British and internationaljazz circuit since he emerged aspart of the late 1980s young UKjazz scene. Yet for all hiswidespread popularity, he’sremained hungry for exploringsonic pastures new.

These explorations take thelistener through a sonicuniverse that “feels like asoundtrack to getting lost inthe stars” (Downbeat).

Sheppard’s gracefulsaxophones weave a paththrough the other-worldlyguitar sounds of Eivind Aarset,and the skittering patterns ofrhythm team Michel Benitaand Sebastian Rochford.

“Tip-toeing delicacy” is howthe Guardian described their2015 ECM recordingSurrounded by Sea. Itssuccessor, Beyond the DancingSun, is tipped to exceed allexpectations.

A Brief History of The CoolestInstrument in the World,devised by Chris Montague,marks the milestones of theelectric guitar through 80years of popular culture, fromChuck Berry to Jimi Hendrix.

Through a mixture ofperformance and speech, thisshow celebrates the greatguitarists through the agesand the versatility of theinstrument.

One of the UK’s mostinnovative guitarists and afounder member of Troyka,Chris Montague is widelyrecognised for his skills as acomposer and performer. He’sjoined in this concert by ConorChaplin (bass), JamesMaddren (drums), and MichaelL Roberts (vocals/piano).

This unique live show alsoprovides the opportunity foramateur guitarists to performan original composition withChris and his band on stage atthe beginning of theperformance.

1917 was a defining year for jazz, with the birth of some ofits most influential artists: Thelonious Monk, DizzyGillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, Tadd Dameron, Buddy Rich andMongo Santamaria. Peter Edwards conducts the NuCivilisation Orchestra performing his latest commission,A Journey with the Giants of Jazz. Taking motifs from sixworks associated with these jazz icons as its startingpoint, the commission will be preceded by performancesof the six works by young people from Hull and EastRiding schools.
