ICKES’S ENGLISH REVIEW Once again the school year is flying by. It’s

hard to believe I’ve been at HP for more than a decade now. This year I’m teaching two freshmen and junior English sections, in addition to an honors section of juniors and two honors sections of seniors. The first half of the school year was spent establishing expectations for grammar and reading, and the second half of the year will focus on refining those skills.

The seniors have completed a technical writing portfolio, which consisted of applying to colleges and for scholarships—some students have already been accepted into the college of their choice and awarded scholarship funds! The Honors 12 classes are also planning to attend a live performance at Billings Studio Theatre this spring.

The juniors are just starting to study the art of persuasion and argument in preparation for the ACT writing test as well as working on their reading and grammar skills. Mr. McKenney has set up an edReady program offered by the state to help them study for the ACT test, which they will take this spring.

The English 9 sections will wrap up their study of mythology after the break by reading The Odyssey. They have extensively practiced grammar skills first semester and will continue to improve those throughout the rest of the school year. They will end the year by studying Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet as well as various short stories.

It has been a great year of school and community support, which staff and students appreciate more than we can really let you know. The PTA book fair and giving tree were awesome, and the support through donations to Christmas Bright, Socktober, and all our various fundraising projects has been phenomenal. I took a few years off from sponsoring or coaching activities but am gearing up to sponsor Close-Up again next school year. We are planning a trip to Washington DC and New York City in the spring of 2020. It has been so fun to watch our students compete and succeed in their various events and competitions, and I encourage all of you to check out the amazing things they are doing! GO BIG RED!
