Hutch School is a uniquely supportive learning environment for K-12 school-aged patients and family members who are temporarily living in Seattle while undergoing serious medical treatment at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, University of Washington Medical Center, and Seattle Children’s Hospital.

We believe that:

Hutch School is a place of hope, a place where kids can be kids, and a place where children feel safe and protected.

We recognize that children and families each follow their own path in coping with change, stress and uncertainty.

Because everyone is here due to a serious illness we treat each other with compassion and extra kindness.

Our community of multi-age classes addresses individual academic needs and promotes group learning.

Seattle and the Pacific Northwest provide rich opportunities for integrated learning.

Hutch School: A Surprise Away From Home By Mia, 10th Grade, New York I first came to Hutch School about three weeks ago. Hutch School is very different from my high school back home. A typical day here starts off with a screening. “No sniffles, no cough, no sore throat?” Laurie, the Social Worker hands us a sticker that says, “Thank you I have been screened today”. It was different that first day to stand in line and be asked about my health. The goal is to keep the students and their patients safe and healthy. Hutch School is a K – 12 school. There are only three classrooms: one for primary students, another for middle school students, and another for high school students. There are only two high school students enrolled right now, which is very different from my high school back home. I’m used to being in a class with anywhere from 20-25 students and I am used to having six different teachers each day. I like this school because there is a lot of one-on-one teaching. If I don’t understand something the teachers can help me and I don’t fall behind. I ask questions here because it is not me in front of a huge class. Hutch also offers classes like Drama, Art, Music, and Nutrition. At first, I did not like the classes but now I think they are fun. I have also gotten to go on field trips. Since I’ve been here, I have participated in a class at Parkour Visions, I’ve been to the Annual Hutch Award luncheon at Safeco stadium, I went to see a National Geographic Live presentation on Antarctica, and today I will be going to Whole foods with my Nutrition class. My teacher Margaret says she believes that we learn as much from personal experiences as we do from our books. Although Hutch School is very different from my high school back home, it is a great

school with great people. The staff is very friendly and so are the students. I have

learned a lot just by sitting next to a kindergartner at lunch or playing with a group of

younger kids at recess. Everybody was so welcoming on my first day and for the

short amount of time I’ve been here, I have grown very comfortable with everybody.

I can honestly say I look forward to coming to school every day. I’m glad I came to

Hutch School for the time that I’m here in Seattle.

The Weather’s Song By Lillian, 7th Grade, Washington

The rain drips down, Sliding off rooftops, colliding with the road with a clink. As I step, my boots jingle and the ground laughs.

Sounds that remind me of home, drowned by endless clanks of construction, the screaming airplane that begs for attention.

The city works together, trying to end the nostalgic weather song. But it’s still there. I can hear it.
