Some Crazy World League Figures

The statistics surrounding the new IHF’s

flagship competition are dizzying. After

a first edition that greatly exceeded

organizers’ expectations, during which

19 countries took their very first steps

on the international stage, the 2014-2015

edition of the World League was attended

by 56 nations in the Men’s division and

53 in the Women’s division, with a total

of over 450 matches over a period of just

under two years. Over 540 hours filled

with fun, suspense and adrenaline will

be presented to hockey fans via YouTube,

culminating in the finals.

WL matches also delight fans of offensive

effectiveness. For example, during the

Men’s final held in New Delhi in January

2014, eight teams scored no fewer than

114 goals in 24 games, for an average of

4.75 goals per game. In Brasschaat, over

35,000 spectators, supervised by more

than 1,200 volunteers, are expected

during the 15 days of competition.

What else ? For this second edition

of the World League, four new nations

made their debut in the competition:

Brunei, Uzbekistan, Zimbabwe and

Afghanistan.

HOCKEY FAN’S DIARY: be there!

FLICK & BULLY

Although the first meeting on the island dates back as far as 1831, it had to wait

until the early 19th century for the sport to really become popular with the Kiwis.

And the women were the first to take to the stick and found the first club, in Kaiapoi

in 1896. It was they who disputed the first international match in September 1914

for a New Zealand women’s team sport (even before cricket, which had to wait

until 1935), as part of a tournament of the English team on the other side of the

world. A first match that was then followed by a second... 21 years later during

a tournament in Australia. After their fourth place at the London 2012 Olympic

Games, Mark Hager’s team pursued its base work. Today, the Black Sticks boast a

good balance of youth and experience and have all the cards they need to end up

with a ticket to Rio next summer. “God Defend New Zealand”

compétition phare de la FIH ont de quoi

donner le tournis. Après une première

édition qui a largement dépassé les es-

pérances de ses concepteurs, avec 19

pays qui ont effectué, à cette occasion,

leurs tout premiers pas sur la scène in-

ternationale, cette édition 2014-2015 de

la World League a enregistré la partici-

pation de 56 nations chez les Messieurs

et 53 chez les Dames pour un total de

plus de 450 rencontres sur une période

d’un peu moins de deux ans. Sur You

Tube, ce sont plus de 540 heures de

fun, de suspense et d’adrénaline qui se-

ront proposées aux amateurs de hockey

jusqu’aux finales. Et les matches de WL

affolent également les compteurs au ni-

veau de l’efficacité offensive puisque, par

exemple, lors de la finale messieurs or-

ganisée à New Delhi, en janvier 2014, les

huit équipes ont inscrit pas moins de 114

buts en 24 rencontres soit une moyenne

de 4,75 buts par match. Et, à Brasschaat,

ce sont plus de 35.000 spectateurs, en-

cadrés par plus de 1.200 volontaires, qui

sont ainsi attendus durant les 15 jours de

compétition.

de la World League, quatre nouvelles na-

tions ont effectué leurs débuts dans la

compétition : Brunei, l’Ouzbékistan, le

Zimbabwe et l’Afghanistan.

HOCKEY FAN’S DIARY: à ne pas manquer!

Même si la première rencontre disputée sur l’île remonte déjà à 1861, il a toutefois

fallu attendre le début du 19e siècle pour que la discipline trouve réellement grâce

aux yeux des Kiwis. Et ce sont les femmes qui furent, les premières, à tâter du

stick et qui fondèrent le premier club, à Kaiapoi, à 1896. Ce sont encore elles

qui disputèrent, en septembre 1914, la première rencontre internationale pour un

sport collectif néo-zélandais féminin (avant même le cricket qui devait attendre,

de son côté, 1935), lors d’une tournée de l’équipe d’Angleterre de l’autre côté du

globe. Un premier match qui fut suivi d’un deuxième… 21 ans plus tard lors d’un

tournoi en Australie. Après leur quatrième place lors des JO de Londres en 2012,

le groupe de Mark Hager a poursuivi son travail de fond. Aujourd’hui, les Black

Sticks possèdent un bon équilibre entre jeunesse et expérience mais aussi toutes

les cartes en main pour décrocher un ticket pour le rendez-vous de Rio, fixé l’été

Als presenting sponsor van de halve finales van de World League en partner van de Koninklijke

Belgische Hockeybond (KBHB) heeft Fintro besloten om partner te worden van het Belgische

hockey om een podiumplaats te behalen op de Olympische Spelen van Rio in 2016. “We zijn

verheugd dat we een belangrijke bijdrage kunnen leveren aan de realisatie van dit prachtig

evenement. Er zijn veel gemeenschappelijke punten tussen het hockey en onze filosofie. Hockey

hecht zowel belang aan de ontwikkeling van de individuele speler als aan de teamspirit, waarbij

het coachen van individuen en ploegen een cruciale rol speelt. Bovendien staat hockey in België

synoniem voor een groot dynamisme en duidelijke ambities waarin we elkaar herkennen.”

Het partnerschap met de KBHB omvat een structurele

ondersteuning van de acties die de KBHB onderneemt

voor de clubs en de nationale ploegen en stemt perfect

overeen met de waarden van Fintro: professionalisme,

nabijheid en inzet. Door zijn actieve betrokkenheid wil

de bankier en verzekeraar snel een belangrijke partner

worden in de Belgische hockeywereld, een sport die in

ons land elke dag aan populariteit wint.

De World League in cijfers

De nieuwe wedstrijdformule van de FIH

is nog maar net ingevoerd en kan nu al

sensationele statistieken voorleggen.

De eerste editie was een onverhoopt

succes voor de organisatoren: maar

liefst negentien landen schitterden voor

het eerst op het internationale toneel.

En aan de editie 2014-2015 van de World

League nemen bij de heren 56 landen

en bij de dames 53 landen deel. Dat zijn

dus meer dan 450 wedstrijden over een

periode van iets minder dan twee jaar.

Op YouTube kunnen hockeyfans zich

verheugen op meer dan 540 uur fun,

spanning en adrenaline tot aan de finales.

De wedstrijden van de WL doen de

tellers ook doorslaan op het vlak van

offensieve efficiëntie. Zo scoorden de

acht teams tijdens de herenfinale in New

Delhi in januari 2014 niet minder dan 114

doelpunten in 24 wedstrijden. Goed voor

een gemiddelde van 4,75 doelpunten

per wedstrijd. In Brasschaat lokten de

wedstrijden in twee weken tijd meer dan

35.000 toeschouwers, omkaderd door

meer dan 1.200 vrijwilligers.

What else ? Tijdens deze tweede

editie van de World League maken vier

landen hun debuut: Brunei, Oezbekistan,

Zimbabwe en Afghanistan.

Hoewel de eerste wedstrijd op het eiland al in 1861 plaatsvond, werd hockey

pas aan het begin van de negentiende eeuw populair bij de Kiwi’s. Het waren

trouwens de dames die als eersten de stick in handen namen en de eerste club

– in 1896 in Kaiapoi – oprichtten. Ook was de eerste internationale wedstrijd voor

damesteams op Nieuw-Zeelandse bodem – in september 1914 – voorbehouden

voor het hockey (en dus niet voor het cricket, dat pas in 1935 aan de beurt kwam).

Die wedstrijd vond plaats tijdens de wereldtournee van het Engelse team. Na

die eerste wedstrijd volgde een tweede ... maar dan wel pas 21 jaar later tijdens

een toernooi in Australië. Na een vierde plaats tijdens de Olympische Spelen van

Londen in 2012 werkte de groep van Mark Hager onverdroten verder. Vandaag

hebben de Black Sticks een goed evenwicht tussen jeugd en ervaring gevonden.

Ze hebben dan ook alle troeven in handen om een ticket voor de Olympische

Spelen van volgende zomer in Rio te bemachtigen. ‘God Defend New Zealand’.
