llrTIU Support Efforts To the Editor:

It Ia moat un4eratandable that many p.,_10n1 1ho11ld wonde~ what coea on with two apparently rival croupa tryinc to retain the Co-op toodatore, pharmacy and lervice 1tatlon In Greenbelt. Ho\tever, there really are not two rlnl groupa: both Save Our Services (SOS) and Greenbelt Conaunier Cooperative (GOC) have the tame coal, to keep theae aervlcea aervlni ua here In Greenbelt.

Thla is a dlft\c:ult, uphill babt.le and no method to achieve thla J'Qal ahould be ~eomed. The SOS thrust is to attempt to convince the GCI management and board in Savage that they ahould not divest themaelvea of theae operationa, or at least to give a more reallatlc length of time for another croup to •••ume" the aer.-vlcea. GCC agrees completely with theae coals but ia tryln:r to raise funds to purchaae the present stores' a11ets to continue operation under a new coopero&tlve baaed here In Greenbelt. GCC ~uld be happy if ita efforta should not be needed, and SOS wants a facility in Greenbelt should their diplomacy fail.

We need the convenience of all three, pharmacy, food store, and service station, and we all must aupport both theae efforts. We cannot leave thi1 task to any people other than ouraelvea.

A .. ure local Controll To the Editor:

From the time the members and patrona of the Greenbelt Cooperative, Inc. learned of the GCI Board decision to divest Ita food and aervlc1 ata\lon dlvlilona, the principle concern has been to maintain the eaaentlal food aervlcea In the Greenbelt Center.

Baald on the presa re1ease and pronouncement. of GCI, It ia likely that food services will continue under aome other ownerahlp after March 31. Whether that ownenhlp Ia cooperative or private will for the most part depend on community support.

A new cooperative, organized to take over the food store and service station operations on

' April 1, Ia being formed and ·neads our support.

GCI memben and other Greenbetters have an opportunity to auure local control over the food and service station operations by joining Greenbelt Consumer Cooperative, Ine. Please respond to the offers for membership that you receive in the mail, or when you shop in the food stor1. The new cooperative can meet Ita roal with your help.

GREENBELT NEWS REVIEW More Time To the Bdltor:

I write to •rrue in aupport of persuading the Greenbelt Co-op board to keep 011r 1upennarket open for llix montha while Ita future re-Incarnation Ia beinc worked out.

Thtre 11 a atory about a nottoo-:brlght farmer who rahed applea. Be ftrured it co.t blm 14 per dor.en to ral11 them. When he took them to market, be aold them for 80 cents eaeh. Soon he dieeovered that lu waa loam. money. He tho~ht It over a lot, and ftnally the aolutlon came to him. Wlw:t he needed wu a bicrer truck!

I seriously doubt that what old Greenbelt needa on the premlaea of the aupemlarket Ia more of the aame.

I'm 1ure many of my fellow Greenbelters have watched •• cloaely •• I, and with equal concern, 1ometlmea alam, at the changea In our community and their lmpaet on.our three co-opa; GHI, GCS, and the late Twin Pines.

Can we not team from the demise of that latter organisation 1 Certainly It had in many regards a auperb track Neord: a concerned and Involved membership, a dedicated and competent board and staff. In my opinion, Twin Pines had to be sold out because of rapidly changing economic realities· that a c~peratlve run by a volunteer board of dlrectora could not cope with. . Does not the GCS aupennarket face a new aet of eeonomle r.alltlea1 Certainly it Ia a teatament that It ha• aurvived u lone •• it baa. Iruagine the changes which have occurred slnee Ita fo11ndinr when It was the only atore in toWII and for mllea, a time iit which 'they were atilt building walkway• lnatead of freewaya.

But when • II their market now? They face superior competition from Giant and Safeway, which have larger aelectlons·and lower prlcea. And thi1 will probably remain true. So when h'a a five-minute drive to one and a seven-minute drive to the other, why do you co to the Co-op 1

I believe that then can be a viable role for the supermarket pnmlaea, but I don't know enough now to know what it Ia. I like my wife'• Idea of a smaller version of Philadelphia's Boune, or Washlneton'• old post oft\ce: a joint-use apace ahared b)' a number of amall organh:atlons, shops, a deli, a ca.fe, etc. Sure there are problem• with that as
