1. General Description

HX8223-A is a 720-channel output source driver with built-in TCON (TimingController) and DAC. The input interface supports 18-bit RGB for both the portrait(240 RGB x 320) or the landscape (720 dot x 240) display. 8-bit RGB, 8-bit ITU-R BT.601, and BT. 656 interfaces are also included for the NTSC/PAL TV system in thelandscape type displays. The DAC supports transferring digital RGB data to analogRGB data for the internal source driver. The TCON generates the control signals forthe source driver and the gate driver.

The source driver implements 2 lines of sample and hold circuits. While samplingvideo signals, the previously sampled data can be transferred to the output channelsynchronously through the output driver. The simultaneous or the sequentialsampling can be chosen for matching the pixel array type.

The TCON provides horizontal and vertical control timing to the source driver and thegate driver. With built-in DAC and operational amplifiers, the gamma correction isperformed. The digital data is converted to analog signal by the DAC and passed tothe source driver.

2. Features

T-CON

In 720 dot x 240(landscape) display resolution, TCON supports 8-bit serial, 18-bitparallel digital RGB, and CCIR601/656 input interface.

In 240 RGB x 320(portrait) display resolution, TCON only supports 18-bit paralleldigital RGB input interface.

Support the delta and the stripe color filter timing. Operation frequency: 30 MHz max. Support NTSC/PAL TV system. OSD overlay supported in CCIR601/656 input format only. Line inversion driving scheme. Provide the control timing of the source driver and the gate driver. Provide flip and mirror scan control. Operation power supply range: 3.0V~3.6V.

Source Driver

5V analog power supply. Dynamic range: 0.1 ~ 4.9V. Output voltage deviation: +20mV. 720 channels output source driver for TFT LCD panel. Applicable to stripe and delta pattern color filter. Simultaneous or sequential sampling is selectable as matching pixel array type. Include 2 lines of sample and hold circuit. Right and left shift capability. LCD power: 4.5 ~ 5.5V.

DAC

Support 8-bit digital RGB data input, and the output is the analog RGB signal. Operation power supply range: 4.5V ~ 5.5V.

4. Pin description

Pin name I/O DescriptionCLK I Clock signal. Latching data at the rising edge.

D17~D00 I Parallel digital data input. If serial RGB or 601/656 mode is used, onlyD07~D00 are used.

IHS I Horizontal sync input with negative polarity.IVS I Vertical sync input with negative polarity.DEN I Input data enable control. Internal pulled low.

LRC I

The shift direction of the internal shift register is controlled by this pin as shownbelow: QXn is the output signal of the internal shift register.LRC=H: STHQX1QX2•••QX240LRC=L: STHQX240QX239•••QX1

POL,POL2 O

Polarity select for the line inversion control signal.(1). When POL/POL2=L, output voltage is negative polarity.(2). When POL/POL2=H, output voltage is positive polarity.POL swing : VCC ~ VEE.POL2 swing : VDD ~ VSS.

STB I

Standby mode control. Internal pulled high.(1). When STB=”L”, the source driver and DAC are off. All outputs of thesource driver are short to VSS.(2). When STB=”H”, the source driver and DAC are on.

RESETB I Hardware global reset. Low active. Internal pulled high.

EXTNP ISet NTSC/PAL mode is auto-detection or external control. Internal pulled low.(1). When EXTNP=”L”, NTSC/PAL mode is auto-detection.(2). When EXTNP=”H”, NTSC/PAL mode is set by NPC pin.

NPC I/O

NTSC or PAL mode selection. If EXTNP=”L”, NPC is output pin. If EXTNP=”H”,NPC is input pin.(1). When NPC=”H”, NTSC mode is selected.(2). When NPC=”L”, PAL mode is selected.

RES IDefine resolution. Internal pulled high.(1). When RES=”L”, the resolution is 720x240.(2). When RES=”H”, the resolution is 720x320.

UD I

Up/down scan setting.When UD=”L”, normal scan.When UD=”H”, reverse scan.

IF1IF2 I

Control the input data format. IF2 is internal pulled low and IF1 is internalpulled high.

DAC_BSEL I

Define the bias current of the DAC block. Internal pulled low.(1). When DAC_BSEL=”L”, the bias current of the DAC block is low.(2). When DAC_BSEL =”H”, the bias current of the DAC block is high.The DAC_BSEL should be tied high when the input data type is the CCIR601/656 format.

CF1 I Define the input data sequence in serial digital RGB mode. Please referencesection 5.5 Only effective if IF2/IF1=”L/L”. Internal pulled low.

CF2 I Define the used delta type color filter. Please reference section 5.5. Internalpulled low.

MOD IDefine the color filter type. Internal pulled high.(1). When MOD=”L”, the color filter is the delta type.(2). When MOD=”H”, the color filter is the stripe type.

QXH O Reference signal for video decoder to arrange data sequence.

ZX I Zoom in/out modes setting pin. Zoom function is only active in CCIR601/656input mode. Internal pulled low. Reference 5.7.

CKV O Gate driver clock.OEV O Output enable control of the gate driver.UDC O Reverse of UDUDP O Internal link to UD

5.2 Relationship between gamma correction and output voltage

The output voltage is determined by the digital input data if the digital RGB orCCIR601/656 input format is selected. The 8 gamma correction reference voltagescan be set externally or generated internally. If VSET=”H”, the gamma correctionvoltage is external input. If you want to generate these voltages internally, please setVSET=”L”and the default voltage is as below table.

5.3 Digital RGB data input format

For digital RGB input data format, both SYNC mode and DE mode are supported. IfDEN signal is fixed low, SYNC mode is used. Otherwise, DE mode is used. When DEmode is used, the zoom function is not supported.

5.4 NTSC/PAL mode setting

For NTSC/PAL mode setting, you can set EXTNP=“L” for auto-detection. Or you canset EXTNP=“H”and use NPC pin to define NTSC or PAL mode.
