Clubroot-resistant genetics from InVigor.All InVigor clubroot-resistant hybrids have been developed to be resistant to the most predominant clubroot pathotypes found in Canada at the time of their registration.

The three new hybrids InVigor L345PC, InVigor L352C and InVigor Choice LR344PC, along with InVigor L255PC, InVigor L241C and InVigor Health L258HPC all contain the same clubroot resistance profi le. InVigor L234PC contains this resistance profi le plus it contains second generation clubroot resistance to additional emerging clubroot pathotypes, to help combat the ever-evolving clubroot pathogen. Second generation clubroot resistance is designed to combat clubroot in fi elds that still (or start to) show signs of the disease, despite seeding a fi rst generation clubroot-resistant hybrid as part of an integrated management plan.

Clubroot populations in the fi eld can evolve or shift to new pathotypes that current resistant hybrids may be susceptible to. These new pathotypes may become dominant in the clubroot population if no additional integrated pest management approaches are taken and canola hybrids with similar resistance profi les are used repeatedly in the same fi eld. To maximize the durability of genetic resistance in canola hybrids, use an integrated pest management strategy that includes extending rotations in areas where clubroot is a concern. We support the Canola Council of Canada’s agronomic recommendations when growing these InVigor hybrids.

Reliable blacklegdisease protection.To stay ahead of blackleg in Western Canada, a comprehensive and coordinated plan needs to be implemented to have any meaningful impact on blackleg levels. An integrated pest management approach is the optimal way to facilitate ongoing, increased and predictable trade along with proving tangible benefi ts to Canadian canola growers.

InVigor breeders have focused much of their efforts on not only major gene resistance, but also on minor gene resistance. Minor genes provide additive and robust protection against all blackleg pathogen races, unlike major genes that provide a high level of resistance against only specifi c pathogen races. With the wide range of blackleg pathogen races within fi elds across Western Canada (more than 12), minor gene resistance is, and will continue to be, incredibly important as the backbone in providing prolonged management of this disease and protection against existing major genes.

Like any plant/pathogen system, over-reliance on a single means to manage blackleg will eventually fail. Executing a sound integrated pest management plan is integral in managing blackleg, and in cases of severe infection, growers should take aim at the root of the problem and consider extending their rotation on the specifi c problem fi elds to help reduce inoculum levels.

All InVigor hybrids are rated “R” for resistant to blackleg.

We ask all growers and retailers to return unopened bags of InVigor seed for proper storage and retesting. Only unopened bags that we confi rm have not been compromised can be returned.
